some wonderful playing.... I am in the phase of "watching every american ultra tele video" now myself, and I can say that this was the best, most harmonic and enjoyable playing that I have heard.
Robin Mood thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you enjoyed it ;-)
Were you watching videos to help determine a purchase? If so, what did you end up with? I ask as a person looking to make a purchase for an American Fender lol.
My sweetwater rep suggested this one. I don’t have it anymore though. I sold it to a friend and now I have the suhr classic t. The neck profile and pickups suit me better. The ultra is still a great guitar though.
It’s funny when the people you work with say ‘Oh, you play guitar?’...
Yeah... I play guitar. It’s about the only thing I think about. Breathe... guitar.
Beautiful, one of the few channels which I subscribe to where they guy tastefully lays down tracks.
God bless, thank you, make more music. 🎼
Thank you so much. Very kind words. Yea most people know by now that I play but I don’t usually broadcast it out there at work.
That is one of the best looking Tele's I've ever seen - SERIOUSLY! Great color and look at that logo. It's at the top of my list. A different Tele sound? That's interesting because I haven't heard that from the reviews I've watched. Sounds absolutely beast to me. Great review man! Thank you!
Thanks for watching! Yes, it's an awesome Tele for sure. I've had a lot of fun with it
Bought mine yesterday, for approx. USD 1.450,- Had been played once and put back in it's case.
Love it!
Nice!!!
Congratulations on your acquisition. Thank you for the honest review and demo. Mine is on order and since I live in Texas, my color choice was easy.
That’s awesome! Yes I am enjoying the guitar so far.
They come in pink?! Left yourself open for that friend😂
ok i am sold...best Ultra review out there
seriously thinking about pulling the old trigger on this one
Yea it’s really grown on me. It’s all I’ve been playing! Do it! Thanks for checking it out. ;-)
No Cover Charge If you do I will too !👍💰🔥
I got mine about 3 months ago. I could not love a human baby as much as I love that guitar. Suberb feel and playability. Fantastic for blues, rock, country, and the most fun is punk rock!
A nice guitar for sure!
hi man, look at my comment above, do you have any of those experiences?
@@tendingtropic7778 I haven’t adjusted the pickup I’m happy with the tones. I don’t really use the S1 switch much, it’s too muddy sounding for my taste.
@@tg8603 thanks, agree he s1 switch is a bit muddy
I purchased this exact guitar last week - your video being the deciding factor. It arrives tomorrow. I wonder if I'll have buyers remorse when it becomes evident that I can't play it the way you do :). Awesome playing man. Loved it.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Remorse can’t exist in this dojo. ;-)
How do ya like it ?
Sounds great and so is your playing, nice tasty licks
Thank you for watching!
I think it's awesome guitar and honestly, these days If you want to get high quality Tele from Fender and you cannot stand narrow tall frets (like me) this is possibly the only option you can go for unless you want to spend fortune for some relic models. I definitely go for this ine👍
For narrow tall frets I think it makes a difference on the neck profile as well. For me on a standard C like the strat and tell pro models, I really liked the narrow tall frets so it didn’t feel like I was digging into the fretboard. For this ultra the D neck profile is different so the medium jumbo we’re fine for me.
I got my Tele last week. It's great. rock on. best demo yet for this guitar.
Awesome!! Hope you are enjoying yours. Thanks for the kind words.
Lmao!! The edbassmaster voice when you opened it is hilarious!!!
Haha!!!
If you want a “tele” sound, buy any other tele. Some players like teles and they like to rock (like me 🤘). I believe that’s Fender’s audience with this series. I love it.
Thanks for the review. I just order the Artic Pearl.....
Nice! I love that color
Nice bro good you get it.. I got an elite Stratocaster sky burs metallic.. and I’m planning get an ultra telecaster..
PS super informatic too, and also the first time I actually got to see the colour for 'real' :)
Robin Mood yea it’s an interesting color for sure with it changing like it does.
I just got a ultra Telecaster in Texas Tea!! I love it so far. Great video man
Awesome! Thank you!
I enjoyed the tone of the ultra, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment!
I picked up my Texas tea tele yesterday - Nice review man!
Awesome thanks. Enjoy the new tele!
This is amazing bro.
Hope i could buy one of those one day.
Amazing playing too 💚💚
Thank you!
Insanely good playing!!!! Beautiful guitar.
Thank you! Very kind!
Pulled the trigger. Bought mine online for $1500 plus tax. Can’t wait!!!!! I got mine in the “Mocha”.
Congrats! Have fun!
@Luke I love everything about it
I had a tele 30 some years ago.
@Luke also the neck is amazing. It’s so easy to play. My hands aren’t huge and even people with bigger hands say “it feels perfect “.
I agree with it being different. The noiseless pickups contribute to that. It can be more modern but you still get some classic twang. Just not vintage stuff in my opinion. The noiseless just aren’t quite as warm as others but you can tweak things to get comfortable
The professional ones would be warmer if that’s what you mean. Yes. The noiseless tends to be thinner in my opinion. Different animals though. I worked with them but when I went back to the v-mods they were very different. Personally I preferred the v-mods but everyone has a different ear.
the head stock looks more on the wider side rather than narrower, correct ? As you know I'm sure some Tele's have a more narrow head stock , Thanks !
That tone you got in your demo, wow!
Thank you Scott!
I've got one just like it, an' I just love it! The Texas Tea color is chique and I love the neck and how it plays
I sold mine but that color was awesome. My worship pastor has it now so I can still play it when I want to. ;-)
@@GregSummersMusic Nice one.... but, why did you sell it off? BTW you made nice video
@@JohnOShaughnessy I wanted the Suhr tele so I needed to get rid of this one.
Really nice guitar! I got a used American Deluxe Tele last year with the N3 pickups. They were fine...for a while. Then I pulled them out and tried Dimarzio Areas...nope. Gave up on noiseless and went Suhr Classic and that hit the spot.
I’ve gotten used to the pickups for the moment. I’d love a Suhr classic down the road to compliment my Suhr standard I have. I’d have to think about a different neck profile though. Suhr classic neck is a little fatter than I would like. Even C Slim is a favorite of mine. For classic tele tone I can still grab my American pro tele. Those pickups are great. Thanks for the comment!
Do you still have it, play it 4 years later? What do you think about it now?
Sounded great!!! Thinking about getting one,
Bruhhh I never thought Sweetwater would give their customers candies as a gratitude
In another comment I read that you don’t have this guitar anymore. What caused you to sell it? Your playing and tones and the guitar sound amazing and I know the player is always a big part of the equation but what led you to sell this guitar? Thanks for any info
Played mine for a day and hated the pickups. Changed the strings to 11's and used something other than shit fender strings and it has a whole new life. A great sparkle and yes its different than my other teles but it's sounds great.
🔥🔥🔥 that demo was 🔥🔥🔥
Great guitar. Gonna probably buy one today
Awesome! Enjoy!
Sounds bad ass! Would love for you to demo the professional telecaster the same way
not a bad idea. My son also bought an american pro strat that I need to do a video on. I know there are so many out there but at least it would be a new video lol
Good review. A particular viewpoint based completely on your tastes, but cool. It's one more video bringing me closer to buying one instead of another model. I am having a hard time with the price difference and is it really worth it compared to simply modding another model to my taste. I am very much a Tele player these days to the point I am looking to get rid of my other non Tele guitars. But I write and play modern rock with a progressive edge. Not your normal Tele type player, but that doesn't matter of course.
A couple things drew me to this. The belly cut was nice, the compound radius neck, and also this color. It’s really a beautiful guitar. I’m kind of where you are at on teles but i did just buy another super strat Suhr that’s on its way now. With that said, and leaning towards your style of music, the ultra can certainly get you there. If you are paying that price, don’t be afraid to consider other brands as well. I bought a Suhr tele a few months ago (there’s a demo on my channel) and ended up selling this ultra to a good friend of mine. I love it but the Suhr is next level and the pickups are much better than the fender noiseless. It’s not traditional tele spank but more “in tele territory”. I can still get some spank to it but I can also crank up some ac/dc and go all out. This was basically John Suhr’s goal with these pickups. He does offer traditional tele pickups but all the classic T models come with the one I describe. This tele has Suhr’s even C slim and for me is the most comfortable neck I’ve ever had so my other Suhr guitars are the same. The regular classic T that they offer (mine is a 2020 limited edition) comes with a thicker, more standard C shape neck. The fender ultra has a D shape thinner neck. Still a compound radius which is what differs from a standard tele. Neck profile is extremely personal and subjective but it’s my main focus these days. The ultra is still comfortable but it’s definitely thinner than most teles. Not Ibanez thin..but thinner. Hope this helps you. Check out the other Suhr video on my channel. There are only a few demos out there of that particular model.
I like it, love the look and playability, never liked that tele chicken pickn sound. Would u say it's more of a rock machine? I ordered one. I also ordered an evh wolfgang special. Not sure which i will keep
Yea I’d say it’s definitely got less of that twang but still some tele character. It can definitely cover rock. As far as the evh vs the tele they will be different animals so not sure if it’s a fair fight lol. I would say they cover different things.
It’s a fast neck for fender, small too, great for rock.
Awesome video my friend
Thank you!!!
Beautiful guitar man, nice tone.
Thank you!
I love Sweetwater guitar shop!
A dangerous place! Lol
Did you get it Plek’ed?
Great job Greg. It’s certainly a different animal. I’ll have to try it.👍😎🎸
Yes you will have to come by soon! Your turn to be on camera next.
I would love to take lessons from you! Your playing is incredible.
Thanks for the compliment!
Greg Summers you’re welcome sir
Hi there. You can add me to the list of people who bought the guitar after seeing your review. Can't wait to test it. Very nice playing dude! Could you tell me where I could get that backingtrack your playing on around 10' ? Thanks. Pierre
Awesome good to hear you like it. In the video description is a link to elevated jam tracks volume 1. Unfortunately I don’t remember the track but you can grab the entire disc for cheap and there are so many to choose from.
@@GregSummersMusic Thanks! I found some incredible backing tracks at elevated jam...
@@pierrebize5959 those are the ones. Not “ham” tracks lol. Autocorrect
Did you ponder over the Maple vs Rosewood decision or was Rosewood your preferred option from the beginning?
For this one it was all about the Texas tea and it’s only in rosewood. I don’t have this tele anymore. I sold it and bought a Suhr and that is maple. I have another tele tbats also maple so I guess I prefer maple on the teles at least. I do remember playing an ultra model in maple and I liked that one better as well but this Texas Tea is such a great finish.
Hey Greg, great playing! Was the backing track you used your own or one you grabbed on line? Can you divulge the source? Would like to practice against it. Beautiful Framptonlike licks... Excellent! Mixolydian?
Thanks Rich! Yes I'd have to listen to this again but Mixolydian is one of my favorites so I am sure there is some in there. As far as the backing track, the link to it is in the video description. It's not free but you may be able to find it on youtube and play along with it. Have fun!
@@GregSummersMusic Thanks Greg, actuall meant to say Dorian. Coffee coming you way! thanks again!
@@richstibrick5535 Thank you!!!!
@@richstibrick5535 Very generous of you. I really appreciate the coffee! ;-)
Greg, great review. Very helpful. I like the physical attributes of this guitar, but I want the “traditional tele tone”. Do you think that can be achieved with different pickups?
Absolutely. So many options out there for traditional pickups. I don’t have alot of experience with tele pickups but my American tele has the vmod pickups in it and they are very warm and have that traditional tele tone.
From your comments a bit hard for me to tell if you prefer the professional (at least the pickups) over the Ultra (pickups). In short, I gather you like the Ultra a lot but the pickups not so much. Will you eventually replace the Ultra noiseless with different pups? If so, which? Thanks.
Yea I do prefer the professional pickups more. I recently sold the ultra and bought a Suhr tele. I realized how much after getting the Suhr that I wasn;t a fan of the Fender noiseless.
Hey Greg, Really nice! What amp were you using for the video. Waiting for my FM3...Cheers!
This was the matchless dc30 ef86 model (Sadly not on the FM3 yet but soon).
Nice playing!
Thanks!
Beautiful guitar and great video!
Thanks Christian!
Hey man just discovered your channel and really digging it! Totally agree with you here man. I personally couldn’t get over the pups on this guitar. I found them kind of hot and bland. Duncan, Dimarzio, etc, anyone, imho does a much more convincing noiseless pup. Not sure why Fender can’t figure it out. Very odd.
Yep, I got used to them but just the other day picked up a Suhr Classic T and I'm back to "The noiseless pickups have zero life". The Suhr pickups are so good! I can't put this guitar down. I will be uploading a video of the Suhr here in the coming weeks. It's been too long for a video but I haven't have much to talk about, but then again, my kid has a tech channel now and stole all my camera gear hahaha.
Hi Greg. Enjoyed your video. I was teetering on buying one of these because they are so pretty, but I like that chicken pickin country twang. Johnny Hiland /Albert Lee. I get the impression you think a different model is better. Nice playing mate! Appreciate some advice
From having it for a while you can get some twang out of it for sure but some would say that the traditional pickups (not noiseless) would get you there better. Pickups are an easy swap though. This guitar for me is so good. I’ve been able to dial it in to my liking. I wasn’t sure on the pickups initially but it’s all I play now. If you are able, I’d suggest finding one in the store, grabbing a fender deluxe or whatever you like and plug it in and play.
@@GregSummersMusic Appreciate it Amigo Thanks
Wonderful Sound
Thanks!
@@GregSummersMusic You´re welcome
That sounds amazing
Michael Belloni I’m still playing it all the time. One of my favorites for sure
Thank you for this: I got one a week ago. Question: At how many mm do you have your (neck) pickups? when I try to lower the neck pickup (bass side) to more than 3mm, it starts to wobble a bit. Did you have a similar experience? also: engaging the S1 switch really seems to raise the volume output too (and thus I hear a bit more hum). Does yours do that aswell?
I don’t have this guitar anymore but I didn’t have any of the issues you are describing. Make sure you are depressing the strings at the last fret (depress sixth string at last fret then measure at the pole piece and set to 3.6mm then depress 1st string and measure 2mm from
Pole piece to string).
@@GregSummersMusic thanks for the info. i did what you write, and cant set it to more than 3.2 mm or so without the pickup wobbling too much. so perhaps I should go back to the retailer with the guitar, unfortunately.
You can remove the pickguard and check to make sure there are both springs under the pickup or just inspect for anything else that looks off…or like you said, make the retailer check it.
@@GregSummersMusic its a teleacaster with those rubber thingies, the pickup is attached to the pickguard. I checked, there are no springs under the pickup itself. (i checked)
Oh ok. I don’t have mine to check. Generally there are rubber things and springs but I could be wrong. You could probably Google noiseless pickups or pickup installation and someone would probably show what they look like underneath.
I have the Ultraburst Tele, of course I only have one guitar, but I dig the pickups, got mine in April 2020, I wouldn’t mind trying some options, but I’d try and stick with noiseless for sure, I love that Texas Tea, but that pickguard would have to go, kinda like the Taylor wooden pickguards, look great, but feels weird when your hand rubs on them, and I’m one to just plant my pinky on the guard
Yea the pickguard was ok for me unless I scratched it the wrong way with my fingernail then it was nails on a chalkboard or chewing on a styrofoam cup lol. The pickups grew on me but when I bought another tele without them I realize how much I was compromising (personal opinion). They aren’t bad but you have to work with them to get them to warm up.
very nice guitar wow!
it sounds pretty damn good from where i am sitting, but a good guitarist can make any guitar sound good, i really like your style, it was like melodic pentatonic shred with superb phrasing, i have a 1967 tele and a 2013 american standard, the 67 is a darker fuller sounding hotter guitar than the 2013, jury is still out on the broadcaster bridge pickup for me, im thinking of putting SD quarter pounders in my 2013
Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate it! Sounds like you have some very nice teles ;-) I just picked up a Suhr classic T and I’m enjoying that one as well. Will throw up a video soon. Haven’t done one in a while. Good luck on the pickup swap!
@@GregSummersMusic i have never played a Suhr, i have heard they are on another level, especially their pickups, maybe one day
I’d say it’s the neck for me personally. Pickups are a little darker than my American pro tele but still nice. Their necks are crazy good and they have several different profiles. This one is what they call an even c slim. Very comfortable for me but everyone has different tastes. If you get the chance to try one, check them out.
06/27/2020: What do you think of Fender Noiseless pickups for Spank, Quack, and CountryTwang sounds without using a delay, reverb, compression pedal?
Well would be pretty dry lol. The noiseless pickups have gotten better over the years from what I hear. This is my first guitar with them. I had to dial in things initially to get them where I wanted them. There’s some twang, spank but my v-mod ones in my American professional have more twang. The ultra has some of the character but the others ones may have more of what you want. Some people love them and others hate them. They are less open sounding for sure. I’m ok with them right now though.
Niece playing Greg.
Thanks!
Can you compare the deep c neck on the professional playability vs. the ultra? Seem like you way more of a fan of the professional altogether?
From a tone perspective, the pickups in the pro are better to my ears for what a tele sounds like. My pro is very light and well balanced (from a weight perspective). The ultra is just a different animal, but since I've been playing it, it's becoming more and more a part of me and my playing. It's really solid, super comfortable, and the neck, although thinner, is very comfortable, great for bending, and has enough width to avoid cramping after a gig. Necks are so subjective, so it's hard to compare it for others, but that explanation is probably the best I could give at the moment.
The only thing I don't like about it is the tinted neck. Is the neck interchangeable? Im thinking of buying one and changing the neck.
I love the tinted neck personally. I’m not sure on the ultras about interchangeability since it’s a new neck profile. You’d have to email their customer service.
@@GregSummersMusic thanks bro
What AXE FX were you using??? Sounds killer
Axe fx 3 ;-)
@@GregSummersMusic thanks for the reply. RN I am using a Kemper, but like the FX in the Fractal
@@bensoncope1006 I’d love to have a Kemper as well
Do a deep dive on this, please.
Find your Ultra set up for the Ultra.
Truthfully it’s the only guitar that I haven’t had to touch that much. I did replace the bridge saddle screws to shorter ones. The stock ones were sticking up and rough on the palm. Seriously, out of the box it was set up great and that’s rare.
@@GregSummersMusic where did you source the set screws from?
got them from amazon. If you want the link, let me know and I will put it in the video description area.
@@GregSummersMusic The link would be appreciated. I have the same Tele, and my screws are long as well.
Link is in the description. ;-)
Thanks very helpful! Did you look into the no tone load when the tone knob is in position 10 and it clicks.. would love to hear your take on it.
Honestly I don’t think I really put too much thought into it. I do use the tone knob often though. I tend to keep it in the “no load” 10 position at home when playing on my own but work it live a lot.
Thanks I discovered the feature and honestly I don’t hear a big difference.... great content and review! I love my ultra (bought it after your review) but I am still learning how to Get the sounds out of it the I like
Yea only way to really tell is by putting a regular tone pot in there to see how they compare. It works well and I use the tone more often on teles than most guitars. I’ve been able to get really comfortable with the ultra and got things dialed in fairly well. I’m glad I could help a little with your decision. It’s a very comfortable guitar.
Does this one come with a maple fretboard, or just rosewood
Only rosewood.
@@GregSummersMusicThanks man. And nice playing
Thank you!
AWESOME !!!😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈
Thanks!!
gotta play louder to really judge the pickups. Playing inside at the desk is cool and all...but it isn't really the reason the "Noiseless" pickups were made for....TURN IT UP AND COMPARE!
Maybe one day we can play out again lol....until then it's the desk for me. Truthfully I am well adjusted to the guitar now and have things dialed in nice. Thanks for the comment!
Is it worth going for one of these or upgrading a MIM player Tele?
This one will have a different neck profile so it’s going to feel different. I don’t have this anymore. It’s a nice guitar though. For me personally if I would have kept it I would have swapped the pickups. I primarily play a suhr tele and that’s my go to for a while now.
@@GregSummersMusic Thanks for the reply. Yes the whole point of getting a Tele is for the Tele twang. May I ask why you opted for a Suhr Tele instead of a genuine Fender Tele.
@@richardjones2811 I have an American professional already so that’s my twang. The suhr neck is glorious for me personally and still get excited looking at it after a year and a half. You can see the video on my channel. One of the last ones I did. Haven’t done one in a while.
@@GregSummersMusic Cheers thank you. I've done some research on Suhr guitars today and it's like comparing a Lamborgini to a Ford.
Haha. Maybe, but some people really prefer the fender so I always encourage people to at least try one (if you are able to find a dealer close to you). In my opinion they are something special and will spoil you. I’m really picky about the neck since that’s where you’ll live all the time so you need to be really comfortable there. Suhr takes their time on their necks.
I love everything about the ultra Tele. My only thing is the noiseless pickups. I’m not a fan of them.
I have a professional Tele. Hands down it’s the best Tele I’ve ever played. I would put those pickups in the Ultra.
Yep, they're not my favorite either but I am learning where they can fit in a mix. I don't want to jump the gun too soon and start ripping out pickups...truthfully the other day I bought a set of v-mod pickups and then realized I better do more research if I need to change out pots, etc and so I backed out of the sale. Will revisit later if I just can't deal. I play out this weekend so we will see. I have the pro tele so it's always nice to have options.
@@GregSummersMusic Keep me posted. That was the only thing I didnt like about this tele. The PUPS just sounded too dark. Great for rock and metal. Killer for hard rock tones.
Accessable
I never had too much of an issue here but everybody’s hand is different.
Only complaint upper frets not acceptable enough
It's not that kind of guitar
Hey this might be a weird question but if you could only have one guitar, would you pick this one or the 50's original telecaster and why?
Hmmm tough one. As long as the original 50’s neck wasn’t a baseball bat (they were not consistent) I’d take the 50’s original!! This ultra is pretty nice though.
Wow
Hope that’s a good wow ;-)
sounds great but the price tag aint cheap
So true on price. You can pick them up a little less than retail...in some places.
