    Agreed, and since we are having a bit of a difficult depression and some war years ourselves these days, we can use a good laugh too! There was a real charm to the sitcoms of the '50s that can probably never be duplicated tho, because it was, as you say, a product of the era.

    @MisterStereo Ya, there's an interesting TV documentary, 'Pioneers of Prime Time' I think it's called, about vaudevillians leading the charge in early TV variety shows. Donald is interviewed, as are many other born-and-bred vaudevillians who hosted TV shows in the early '50s, like Milton Berle, Red Skelton, Sammy Davis Jr.
    They are all interesting... but Donald O'C is still my favorite! Boy, could he dance.

    @MisterStereo So what is the appeal of these old shows? It's hard for me to compare as I haven't watched TV in decades, but I would say: 1, the humor is gentle and 'un-mean'. 2, the shows are live, and as Donald said, people like to see the little screw-ups. 3, the talent is huge, the dancing superb (Savion Glover?). And 4, the performers, altho professionals, are more recognizeably 'real people' than the average 'reality show' participant, and somehow less distant from the viewing audience.

    @iLY0X8 Yes, this is Donald's wife, Gwen. This was around the time their marriage was going downhill. Donald tried to save it through including her in his show.

    @MisterStereo Very true. Donald himself did a bit of radio, when he was trying to get his movie career back on track after WWII military service, and there's a bit on 'SUSPENSE!' radio where he plays a murderous, 'dame-hating' psychopath who is obsessed with his beautiful hands - an interesting change from his usual comic persona!

    Curious bit of history, as well as being fun. Donald and Gwen had been married 7 or 8 years at this point, had a young daughter, and would be divorced a couple years later. Gwen's not much of an actress, but Donald carries the show, as always!

    @MisterStereo It's true.

    I think it could happen, but you would need some very big talents to start off with! Still, there must be actors/dancers/comedians who could pull it off... they must exist in every era. I think the casting would be critical.

    @MisterStereo Yes, true. And I don't watch reality shows or any TV either, so I am sort of judging by things I read online. But while I think the 'live' factor is important, I also think a likeability factor is important... I am an old fart, I'm sure, but I can't relate to 20-yr olds who have had more surgery than I will have in my lifetime. Some level of 'people like us' is necessary...

    @rungirlmgg i just read one of your comments about donald o'connor. his marriage went downhill? he seems so perfect on t.v. seems that he would have an everlasting marriage. do know why it failed? that shows character that he tried to save it and didn't initially just give up, but do you know the story behind what really happened? lol curious :)
