I'm using Lychee and it has this fun optional feature where you can enter the cost per litre of the resin you use and it calculates the amount of resin used per sliced scene and how much it costs. It's pretty fun to just see the numbers after the slicing is done and go like: "Oh nice, I just got a proxy model for something worth 100€ for about 4€ and I prefer the look too."
@@IAcePTI The cleaning fluid I use is red ethanol and it costs like 10€ per 4 litre bottle and I change it like 3 times a year at most, usually just filtering it does the trick. It goes pretty long way when you've got two different tubs and use the first one to just rinse off loose resin and second one to actually cleaning the models. So I spend about 30€ on cleaning fluid annually. That's less than a box of space marines. Electricity cost for one printer is basically not even noticeable in my bills. Like it doesn't even compare to how much power my PC consumes so honestly lychee doesn't need to add all that up. Solid info man, my old photon S is still going strong and 2k printers are a great jumping off point for anyone interested in the technology but who don't want to break the bank.
I dove right into it a few years ago and there is a bit of a learning curve. It's nice the lycee slicer has those community settings now, that helps... but there isn't very much useful content on youtube to help you get your printer up and running, at least not that I have found... now don't get me wrong, there are a few channels that do produce great 3d printer content, but you really gotta dig to get to them.. My experience with 3d printing has been quite the journey... I'm glad I have one, but it has it's headaches too. Make sure if you're reading this comment an debating getting a 3d printer and end up buying one, ALWAYS and i mean ALWAYS, get 3d files that come presupported, it will save you so much time. Cheers, great video... thanks for sharing.
I bought my Elegoo Mars 2 Pro for £280 at the beginning of the year, and I thought that was a bargain! It's now down to £180 and it's perfect for minis.
Also Saturn 2 is just insane. Like how on earth can you get a printer with 10 inch 8k screen for like 600€? It's twice as good as Saturn and last year that was already bit of a bargain when it comes to machines with bigger build plates, which are perfect for big monsters or for printing several smaller models at the same time.
Pretty sure the Mars 2 Pro is the best budget printer we can get atm! Got a Mars 3 just for the 4k and 28mm minis I want to print but if I was going for 32mm+ figures, MArs 2 Pro it would be.
My advice is get the printer that offers spare parts in the country you live in. My first printer was a sonic mini as shown in the video. The replacement screen was not available in Australia as soon as the 4k model came out so therefore had to be purchased direct from Phrozen. The cost of the new lcd screen including shipping was nearly the price of a new one. I ended up just giving it away for free and got an Anycubic given they have spare parts available locally at a reasonable price.
I’m using an Anycubic Photon Mono and while it’s only a 2k printer I’m still getting impressive results from it. I love the fact I can print and paint all in a day, and the choices of mini manufacturers coming out is just insane! Great vid and am a massive fan of OnePageRules!!
I've been using an old Anycubic Photon. The original Photon. No mods. Bone stock orginal right off the manufacturing line original. My wash station has been left over cat treat containers. The cure station is a cardboard box that came from a ream of printer paper. The box has aluminum foil on the inside, a string of LED black lights, and one big black light. Simple and cheap. Eventually I'll get a bigger better machine. But until then I'm mostly making this work for me.
I got a brand new Photon Zero for £95 and it still gives me great results. Still on the original FEP after almost 2 years and many, many bottles of resin! I did find the wash and cure to be very useful too, and we’ll worth the money.
I use mine mainly for terrain... GW charges $80 for a killteam terrain set... for the price of 4 terrain sets you could afford a 3D printer and literally have a portal to unlimited terrain! Yes, there is a bit of a learning curve... but terrain also doesn't need to be as pretty as minis so I have actually saved failed prints because they failed in a "melty" way that actually added to its look. If you have a solid computer and some patience, you too can create basically anything your heart desires.
Hi, I have two problems 1: are there any household ways of disposing of water contaminated with resin? 2: are there any good sources for stls for upgrades for pre existing minis?. I'm looking for minotaur space marine upgrades!
AFAIK exposing the water to UV light in a clear container will sediment and cure it making it safe to throw down the drain. I use the same method for pre-filtering iso alcohol to recycle it and use again.
My Creality LD-002H provides me with enough miniatures to paint for years. For the domestic consumer, upgrading to bigger/crispier machines is not a requirement. For professional printers running farms, that’s a whole different thing.
Bought a Mars2 in september..have been using it since.Had some trouble, the Elegoo comunity helped me out - did not expect that. Now I print what i want..or print somethong for a friend. It is a learning proces..but once you get it..it just happens. Stuff stil doesnt print right sometimes..but then you just stick the mini in the back row..or print another. But I try to just print what I will paint..try to keep the pile of shame as small.as possoble..❤️🤞
Like many I have love hate thing with resin printers. My resin printers are older Photon X original, and Elegoo Mars. But I still can't deny the quality on even on my older resin printers compared to my fdm printers. I use both still as each have their benefits. I have not yet found a reason to upgrade my older machines. The main thing that will make me upgrade is my machine dies or there is a massive speed increase. Like when we went from RGB to mono screen. That was pretty good speed increase.
You didn't even need to import settings since OPR gives their printing settings (and they are Vroom settings os it will print a bit faster). I used them and only had a partial fail (half of a spear supports that didn't stick, probably a temperature issue), the rest came out great. OPR Supports are really really good, the only risk being breaking parts of the mini if you don't use warm water.
I agree 100% with the wash and cure station. I never wasted my money on one. I think they're completely unnecessary. The day I ordered my first Anycubic Mono I also ordered a pickle tub from Amazon. It has the basket in it and does the job perfectly. I started by curing things in my yard in the sun for a while, but I've since added a little uv light that came with a solar turntable and a metal rig. I put the whole thing into the box it came in, which I lined with tinfoil and I have a curing station for $10.
If a ventilated enclosure isn’t an option, I would hold off until you have a little more space. I wouldn’t want to sleep in the same room as my printer
Depends on the resin you are using - im usilg official elegoo resin and its absolutely fine (some printers have small filters in them) while the flexi resin i got once stunk like hell - if you are VERY concernead there are plant based and water washable resins as well
Yeah. I'm really suprised he didn't mention safety. Lung damage from long term resin fumes exposure is really dangerous. You really don't want resin fumes wafting around your house or in your bedroom. I wouldn't consider it unless I had a separate work space, like a shed. I certainly wouldn't sit next to one all day painting. I'm guessing Luke hasn't seen the videos of the people who have long term exposure to resin fumes, they can barely breath because their lungs have been coated and find it difficult to make it through the day without feeling exhausted. Really sad. I wish Luke would take his own safety more seriously.
@@maciejmazur2622 As chemicals every resin should have safety data sheets. No matter what resin you want to use, check them before using and keep them at hand.
i love my resin printers and fdm printers. i have a load of models i need to print and paint. though i do tend to like to print the models a lot larger than normal. and love the outtakes. i feel your pain. i have the same problems creating my videos. and if i was using my outtakes. they would be way way longer than the videos. lol. thanks for sharing and you confused me changing your logo. hehe :)
My tips: ikea boot tray to set printer on and keep things clean, big box of latex/nitrile gloves, lots of kitchen roll!, 2 tubs of IPA for cleaning prints (one dirty for initial cleaning and 1 clean for getting remaining residue off). I made a curing station for about £25 out of a large new paint tin with reflective inside surface, UV led strip and a solar powered rotating display stand. Works well.
Well after this video i snagged one of the phrozon 4k mini bundles for my first 3d printer, OPR also landed those wardeamons at just the right time to push me over the edge.
Dang, I am going to have to try out Lychee. I hate looking up resin / printer settings. The only thing is, no one seems to recognize that humidity levels and temperature also affects the settings. For example, I print in my basement where it is a little cool and I have to add a second or two per layer to compensate. Also, I have to tweak the settings for different makers. For example, I can print faster with Loot Studios but with Broken Anvil I have to add another second or two per layer just because of the way they do the supports.
I bought a cheap nova3d printer from my brother to see how I got on with it. Lot easier than I thought & some very cool stl's out there I would never have got the chance to paint otherwise.
As someone who has both Photon S (with mono screen upgrade) and Mini 4K, you are absolutely right. There isn't so much difference that you need to buy latest and greatest. And honestly, when somebody asks me if I can print something, I gladly do it because some people are just put off by the "hastle". And people are really surprised how good miniatures look. For myself, I will probably get large 8K printer, just because of the size it can print.
I recently had to replace my OG elegoo mars and went with an OG Phrozen Sonic Mini because it was 50% on amazon at the time. In every way the experience has been worse for me. The print quality is noticeably worse on the things I've been printing, I've had more failures, and cleanup and bed leveling is more of a pain (due to the flat backed print bed and 4 screen system). As soon as I can justify the price I plan on getting an Elegoo Saturn to take advantage of the bigger build plate, but until then I can't see me doing a heap of printing with this OG prozen sonic mini.
I can recommend Saturn, used one for almost a year now without issues. I'd tell you to get Saturn 2 instead though because it's quite literally twice the machine but doesn't cost that much more. I'm just waiting for an excuse to replace mine.
This was really helpful! I was thinking about spending £600ish on my first printer - but I’m unsure if I will enjoy it or even use it! So I’m going to try on a cheaper one and then if so upgrade later!
I'm having a child in a few weeks, and there is no chance I'd want that resin in the same house as him. The whole idea of 'new consumer technology using toxic chemicals'-bit have been setting of alarm bells in my head for years now.
what's the name of the site/software where you can look up the resin profiles? I couldn't understand it, sorry Thanks for the video Luke, it helps me decide on a printer
The main thing that puts me off 3d printing is the health risks I have no where to put it but my bed room and it’s not that well vented so I don’t know if there’s a better way to use one in my situation
Yeah, good for me I bouth the Elegoo Mercury X Bundle. The wash machine just died on me, but at least the cure machine is still working. Look like the wash station durability not being that good is kind of a stapple in the 3D printing industry for now...
im sure there's some chemistry-informed math that would work out the correct settings for each machine in combination with each printer but i couldnt be arsed - thank god for community hacks!
Been using an Elegoo Mars 2 for a while now and a Patreon member of OPR for nearly a year now and it is so worth it. One thing I never understood is the issue with cleaning and the need for alcohol....just use water washable. All I use is water washable and never had any trouble, the smell is also less and the resin is less toxic as well, which addresses so many issues I noticed people have. Now still best to be safe and wear gloves/mask, but literally the Elegoo water washable I use the most only switching when out of stock and it is as simple as a bit of hot water to get the models cleaned up, no extra alcohol cost.
Great video! I've printed a few of these smaller war demons out so far. I had some broken horns as well :p Gonna try out some tougher resin for the really delicate stuff!
On the contrary, you need flexible softer resin, ABS like from Elegoo is is really good, or 20%ish Siraya Tech Tenacious mix with other resin if you want max durability, though that’s kinda expensive.
Call for advice: I used some methylated spirits to clean the polarised film, and for some reason it's left loads of tiny, clear, hard bubbles behind. Screen and eyeglass cleaners don't work, and I'm hesitant to resort to heat. Can anyone help me?
An Elegoo Mars 2 Pro is a couple hundred bucks, grab the Elegoo standard resin (or water washable) for another 20 and boom. Easy peasy and it's a machine that's crazy reliable.
@@GeekGamingScenics Okay, thanks for clearing that up. I haven't yet delved into the 3D printing world just yet, but am very interested. I was looking at Anycubic and Elegoo printers, but have read there was some QA issues with the printers and the 3D prints fail more than usual. Also some software and file format limitations with them. Especially with the Anycubic printers. The two you demo'd were Phrozen models. I'm curious how do they compare with Anycubic or Elegoo brands? I want to print out military vehicles and figures in a 1:32/54mm scale. So I would need something decent enough to printout a tank size something on the scale of 12"x6"x6". Cheers!
I'm looking at the amount I've spent on 40k over the years, a 3D printer would have been a much better investment if they had been available all those years ago. I'd have a much more impressive army(s), that's for sure
An even cheaper way is to go with an FDM printer rather than a resin one. You're not messing around with chemicals and fumes and you're spending a fraction of what you spend on a resin printer. Your prints won't be as high-quality as a resin printer, but if you can still get some great detail in the models. I swear by my Ender 3. And if you're printing larger pieces (terrain or large vehicles/monsters) it saves a lot of time and pain.
Let the resin settle to the bottom of the ethanol for 48 hours. Set it in the sun for a few hours. Siphon of the clear ethanol. Pour the resin sludge onto cardboard. Let it cure in the sun completely and discard.
SLA printing isn’t for everyone but if you’re a little brave and whiling to take the plunge get an Elegoo or Anycubic printer that is atlesst 4k and learn how to use chitubox. It’s not that great of time investment compared to the time we’ve all spent building models. Machines can break, prints can fail and If you’re the type of hobbyist that puts models together poorly, gets in deep with projects to never finish them and give up when something doesn’t come easy this will be another sink hole for you.
I can comfortably say I can print 80+ minis including a couple of big unit depending on the supports from 1 resin bottle that’s like $600-700? (depending on your country, here is more like $1000) on GW standards, so definitely cheaper, but GW minis still better quality and more durable
As MrBizteck said, they are in the app. Click on the 3d Printer button then in the pop-up window click add resin and it will bring up community profiles. From my own experience I don't think they are that reliable but your mileage may vary, perhaps the profiles for a Creality HALOT One with Anycubic Resin are just not that good but other printers are.
One Page Rules beats out GW's AoS any day of the week, their 40k alternative is also amazing, they aren't "Cloning" GW models, they're making their own concepts like the scavenger jackals - i mean; GW keeps price hiking and then doing "limited releases" that become not so limited in the future and paying for new codex's every year is insane when you compare it to this...plus the skirmish tables you can make is insane, I like doing the DIY builds but man even their terrain is top notch to put on a battle board.
my biggest, and probably only, reason that i do not own a 3d printer ist my flat. no electricity in the cellar, no spare room, so its bedroom or living room. both not great options. the smells are quite bad ive heard
So glad to see One Page Rules getting some more exposure. Such a crazy value and you printed a great looking army. Thanks Luke.

what's the name of the site/software where you can look up the resin profiles? I couldn't understand it, sorry
Thanks for the video Luke, it helps me decide on a printer
I have a 6 year old Prusa Mk2 for terain. And a 2 year old Mars 1 ...still cant find a genuine reason to upgrade.
Thank you , Luke ,

The main thing that puts me off 3d printing is the health risks I have no where to put it but my bed room and it’s not that well vented so I don’t know if there’s a better way to use one in my situation
Pretty much in the same boat.
Feta Cheese container. I also love the good old Chinese takeout bowls.
Those feta pots are so handy lol
What software and PC spec do you need to work with the print files?
Feta cheese is delicious, never bought it but apparently the containers are useful too
Glad to hear it's going to be easy for us Mums & Grans 🤣🤣
I'm looking at the Elegoo Mars 3 Ultra 4K resin printer. Would you say that's a good option?
where do you go to download resin profiles?......cheers
It totally does sound like swing swing
Great video! I've printed a few of these smaller war demons out so far. I had some broken horns as well :p Gonna try out some tougher resin for the really delicate stuff!
On the contrary, you need flexible softer resin, ABS like from Elegoo is is really good, or 20%ish Siraya Tech Tenacious mix with other resin if you want max durability, though that’s kinda expensive.
@@Esteban_Santos I use Siriyatech fast. I do want to try tenacious sometime, but yea It is expensive! Have you tried Anycubic UV Tough Resin?
@@hauntswargaming I haven’t but the hard ones I tried are very brittle
@@Esteban_Santos It's supposed to be strong and flexible. I have a bottle ready but I haven't tried it yet.
@@hauntswargaming let me know how it goes! :)
Call for advice: I used some methylated spirits to clean the polarised film, and for some reason it's left loads of tiny, clear, hard bubbles behind. Screen and eyeglass cleaners don't work, and I'm hesitant to resort to heat. Can anyone help me?
Old 3D Printers Excellent informative video. Now I’m seriously thinking about purchasing a cheaper 3D printer. Well done Luke and Josh
can a printer that small print something as big as magnus?
What are the models used?
An Elegoo Mars 2 Pro is a couple hundred bucks, grab the Elegoo standard resin (or water washable) for another 20 and boom. Easy peasy and it's a machine that's crazy reliable.
Where is the printer brand/model quality comparison you promised? You seemed to elaborate on that.
Imo the all american rejects are on par or better than sum41/blink182, why they so underrated
cheapest way is to go to a pound shop and buy a few bags of plastic soldiers and tanks.
It's actually the resin, storage of resin and toxic side of resin which stopped me from buying one.
Do you need a PC to do all the s
"Stuff"
But is it simple enough that i can just send the file from my phone to the printer? I think thats what will finally push me over the edge.
Next vid Luke gets his maw to use a 3D printer
An even cheaper way is to go with an FDM printer rather than a resin one. You're not messing around with chemicals and fumes and you're spending a fraction of what you spend on a resin printer. Your prints won't be as high-quality as a resin printer, but if you can still get some great detail in the models. I swear by my Ender 3. And if you're printing larger pieces (terrain or large vehicles/monsters) it saves a lot of time and pain.
How are you supposed to dispose of the ethanol/resin waste effluent?
Let the resin settle to the bottom of the ethanol for 48 hours. Set it in the sun for a few hours. Siphon of the clear ethanol. Pour the resin sludge onto cardboard. Let it cure in the sun completely and discard.
@@jeff-rc2ro Okay. That makes sense. Thanks.
Great video, thanks 👍
SLA printing isn’t for everyone but if you’re a little brave and whiling to take the plunge get an Elegoo or Anycubic printer that is atlesst 4k and learn how to use chitubox. It’s not that great of time investment compared to the time we’ve all spent building models. Machines can break, prints can fail and If you’re the type of hobbyist that puts models together poorly, gets in deep with projects to never finish them and give up when something doesn’t come easy this will be another sink hole for you.
I feel like it will end up being more expensive because I’ll be printing so many minis and terrain lol
I can comfortably say I can print 80+ minis including a couple of big unit depending on the supports from 1 resin bottle that’s like $600-700? (depending on your country, here is more like $1000) on GW standards, so definitely cheaper, but GW minis still better quality and more durable
But what about if you don’t own a PC? Can you still 3d print?
you need something that can run slicing software
Luke grown hair, scared me
Anyone recommend a secondhand one? I can't afford a brand new one.
Are you still looking for a 3d printer
Does anybody have a link for the Lychee community settings he mentioned? Having trouble finding it
Is it not built into the Lychee slicer. When you open it it can ask to update the settings.
Archvillain games has models that make great centerpiece leader models for demons and lizardmen so far
Wish l had space for a printer and money to buy resin and printer.
love your work! never been the first comment before! hahaha
When did "hobby" become a verb?
"You don't need the wash and cure station" - someone who has never used the wash and cure station.
New printers are becoming almost plug and play
I use a pickle jar
