    I predict that Starliner's undocking and return will be uneventful and anticlimactic. It seems that Boeing's engineers do have a decent understanding of the RCS thruster overheating issues, and have a plan to circumvent the problems using software and procedure updates. I wish them the best of luck. But, after the landing, where will we go from there...?

    • @findlisa5
      @findlisa5 27 дней назад +1

      I'm surprised you asked after a good guess on what probably happens tomorrow. The answer is another Starliner mission paid for by Boeing to qualify the craft coming sometime after that likely-uneventful return trip, but I don't know how much prep time they would need. Maybe 3-6 months? But success certainly isn't guaranteed on Friday, so it will be very interesting to watch.

    • @victorkrawchuk9141
      @victorkrawchuk9141 27 дней назад +1

      @@findlisa5 There's no guarantee that NASA will require a 2nd crewed test mission after Starliner returns. They might certify Starliner after a review period of a few months if the uncrewed return flight proceeds uneventfully, showing that Boeing engineers have gotten a good handle on the RCS thruster failures. I suspect NASA fears that Boeing will back-out of the contract otherwise, perhaps selling its 50% share of ULA to Sierra Space to pay for the Starliner cost overruns and moving on. NASA has not answered questions on this topic in its press briefings. This is why I posed the question.

      Since it is returning without a crew and Starliner must be returned at some point obviously the risk can be managed for its return.
      As stated in the video the problematic aft thrusters will be used less to improve the odds of an uneventful return.

      Earlier this year, a piece of Space Junk ejected by a SpaceX Dragon, docked at the ISS, crashed through the roof of suburban home in the United States, narrowly missing a young boy in his living room.
      The SpaceX space junk was the same size and weight as a 40mm mortar shell.
      Now, SpaceX is facing the Worlds first Court case for "Damages from Space Junk" by the boys father, who is also the home owner, supported by his insurance companies.
      Despite Elon Musks assertions that no danger is posed at all, SpaceX space junk is now a proven threat to the American people; who have taken this South African salesman at his word. He has broken their trust.
      This pivitol Court case against SpaceX is being very closely watched by the US Congress, NASA, Commercial Space, the US Public and the World.

  • @tw9668
    @tw9668 27 дней назад +3

    In the unlikely event that one or more of the thrusters malfunctioned, the landing capsule may end up in a wrong trajectory or tumbling out of control. None of them is good and the landing capsule may burn up in the atmosphere as the heat shield is not facing the right way. NASA cannot take such a risk however unlikely it is. Regardless, the Boeing Starliner program is done. Look for Boeing's announcement next week. NASA may put out another call for alternative to Space-X because they need two viable options. Another possibility is to rely on Space-X and accelerate the decommissioning of ISS. But money spent with Boeing is down the drain.

    • @allangibson8494
      @allangibson8494 27 дней назад

      NASA already have an alternative to Boeing - Dreamer Chaser was designed as a manned reentry vehicle but has been derated for use as an unmanned supply vehicle. The first is due for launch later this year (it was delayed because of ULA having “issues” with the booster).
      A second vehicle is being sold to EASA for their use.

    If Boeing has already spent all the money the government provided for the Starliner, money for further development of this vehicle will cost Boeing many millions of dollars. So if you are a Boeing bean-counter/executive, making sure the capsule DOESN'T survive re-entry has two benefits: 1.) it makes it look like you made the correct decision for astronaut safety, and 2.) It might get the Starliner program cancelled, thus saving Boeing money in the long run.

    ... They should be redesigning the thruster so it doesn't *need* a valve that can overheat. If they can *afford* to stay in the spaceflight game, that is.
    SpaceX doesn't have this problem. Airbus doesn't have this problem. Lockheed doesn't have this problem. The Apollo program didn't have this problem. The Russians don't have this problem. And though they don't talk about their failures and off-nominal events, the Chinese don't (appear to) have this problem.
    MR-104J is a monoprop thruster. Just bite the bullet and go with an R-4D derivative (hypergolic biprop) like just about everyone else. Crewed flight isn't the place to go cowboy on your designs. (Unless you're willing to rapidly iterate and discover everything that can go wrong before you put it into orbit.)

    With any luck since it be unmanned, it will burn up and that will prove what a hugely wasteful load of rubbish that capsule is!
    Boeing can't even build airliners that don't work or not fall apart in use so this waste of money capsule proves that the company is had it as a company?
    They should save what money is left from this over late over budget rubbish designed launch system and scrap the whole useless system, scrap the SLS rocket too.
    Another rubbish wasteful system the SLS, think about it that too was well late being done, it was 3 times over budget and has tons of faults Plus every mission they are throwing away the whole rocket launch unit wasting those very hard to get main rock engines.
    They should have gone for a 100% reusable rocket system like space x do, then the rocket money lost each flight would not be so! even if the bad designed faulty capsule starliner was to as it did fail at least Boeing would still have something to show for the billions wasted on the system as the rocket would be saved from the being axed as it be reusable and fine they only then need to scrap the capsule. Terrible waste of time and money the whole system is now, put's back the Moon missions years now.
    Get Space X to take the full mission over as at least their rockets and capsules work fine and already had hundreds of successful missions to the ISS.

    Star liner is a Boeing "ruptured duck" that probably will enter Earth's atmosphere in a steep reentry that will burn the spacecraft up !!! The Star liner's thrusters will be unbalanced spinning the capsule into a fiery death. Small wonder NASA will not trust the two astronauts safety to the ruptured duck.

    Wouldn't it be better to have a truster /retro that you don't heat soak within it own normal operating parameters? I mean what if they do have to used these things at full chat what that means they fail? You have this with a heat shield ether it deals with the angle of attack or it doesn't.
