Hi Iain! Thanks as always for commenting! Yes, I do love this canal - I'm very lucky that it's not too far away from where I live. 👍 Very lucky that the weather turned out nice on the only day that I could go out last week! Cheers.
Hi Jeff, I agree with what you said about just keeping Gladys on the Mon, and Brecom Canal. Reason in my agreement is your already in your back garden and the those 2 beautiful canals want some beating.again you picked a beautiful day and such a wonderful part of those Canal networks. 😊 As always take care and stay safe out there 😊
Hi John! Thanks as always for the great comment. Its certainly tempting to have her launched on the Mon & Brec - the only thing is, that its just 35 miles end to end and I'm worried that I'd miss the freedom of the rest of the network - e.g. I want to do Llangollen again and explore some of the Shropshire Union, maybe even venture up North a bit too. But I've no doubt that eventually I will settle on the Mon & Brec - as you rightly say, its in my back garden and I can drive there in about 40 minutes. Cheers!👍
Hi Jeff. I think it would be impossible to not enjoy a walk or a cycle along the Mon and Brec, It really is a beautiful canal and once again you managed to get a fine day. The lift bridges are great examples simple yet effective of engineering. I prefer the manual ones but can understand the need for the electrically operated ones where the road is busy. I think you should go back there in a few weeks or so and find out what the excavations were for, it looks very intriguing and its always good to watch another video on that stretch of canal. By the way my son and I went cycling yesterday and followed your walk along the Birmingham and Fazeley and the Digbeth Branch, then made our way to the Worcester and Birmingham, not before stopping for a pint of Guiness at the Tap and Spile in Gas Street Basin, as you do. See you in the next one Jeff 👍
Hi Dave - thanks as always for commenting! Yes I agree, its always hugely enjoyable on the Mon & Brec. Agreed - these bridges are simple in concept - mind you, on some other canals, they are of a 'balance' type and there's no need to wind them up or down - they are susceptible to the wind though - I remember that from when we hired on the Oxford canal a few years ago - its scary seeing them nodding up and down just as you're going under them! Oh Dave - thanks! I just needed some encouragement to go back to Talybont! I certainly will. 👍 I'm debating where to go to film this coming week - it'll be vlog 99 - my hope had been that 100 would be the big one - i.e. when Gladys launches - but looks like I'll miss that bullseye - hopefully not by much. Well done on the bike ride mate! The towpath is great there other than those raised bricks here and there - a nightmare on the Brompton. Totally understand why you needed a refreshment stop Dave - I could sink one of those now myself! CHEERS! 😁
Hello Jeff greetings from the other side of the pond, stumbled across your channel watching Lorna, whom I found watching Will. I hope you have better luck with your boat than Lorna has been having. Being about the same age as you, I was born in 1958 , visiting the UK and cruising the cut and visiting both the Anderton lift and Falkirk wheel are definitely on my bucket list.
Hi Norman - thanks for the comments! Yeah, there are a number of good narrowboat vlogs to follow and luckily RUclips leads you to others! Very glad you found mine - I follow Lorna and Will's too. Lorna's boat looked great when I saw it at Aintree Boats during my visits to Gladys - but it sounds like there were a number of things that weren't right, not to mention the delays she had (just like I and a few others are having now). I'll visit Gladys before she is due to leave Aintree Boats and have a thorough look at her. Yes the Anderton is relatively easy to get to as its central more or less in the UK and the canal system - Falkirk is up in Scotland of course (much newer - but equally exciting). I hope to do the Anderton some time next year and will video the experience of course.👍
Hi Jeff, you were lucky with the weather that day! Enjoyed the video, the lift bridges are quite something. I think you want more of an adventure first before having Gladys put there though as you mentioned, get out & about elsewhere before doing that eventually maybe. Enjoy your weekend.
Hi Annie, Yes, it worked out well for me, as I couldn't have gone earlier in the week anyway! I was so annoyed with myself for taking the windlass with me, but then leaving it in the car when I got there... the lift bridges are quite intimidating at first sight, but quicker to get through than a lock. I do think Gladys will end up on this canal, but as you say, only after I've got this need for exploration out of my system. That said... I really would be content if the Mon & Brec was the only canal I did with her! Have a nice weekend too - I've been down to Monmouth to have my flu and covid jabs this afternoon... PLUS a badly needed haircut. You'll see a tidier version of me in the next video!😁
@@Gladysthenarrowboat Oh thank goodness you're having a haircut - only kidding but it is getting a bit wild! I'm sure you'd be happy to have Gladys on a duckpond right now but you deserve your adventures once the day finally dawns, can't wait to see you set sail when you eventually do. Yes, leaving the windlass in the car was a bit of a boob, just the sort of thing I'd do. I think one day you *will* be on this canal to enjoy your final retirement but with a plethora of videos under your belt of Gladys's travels.
Thanks Annie - agreed, it was very unruly at the back. Sadly, its disappearing from the front of its own accord ☹️ Hah! Yes, a duckpond indeed! With luck it wont be much longer now - just as soon as they get the engine (finally) delivered. What a farce its all been... Almost 100 videos now Annie - I wonder where I'll be when number 200 gets published! Yes, I'm already looking forward to pottering about on the Mon & Brec once I've finished with the rest of the canal system! Maybe I'll finally start wearing slippers too! Flip flops are still my weapon of choice .😁
@@Gladysthenarrowboat Hi Jeff, having just discovered Lorna Jane Adventures & heard of her problems with her Beetle from Aintree I'm not so confident of a happy outcome with Gladys. If nothing else if you haven't already communicated with her then maybe an idea to watch her videos & make sure you check the items she's had problems with & also get the inspections done suggested by various comments before taking delivery as it sounds very unpromising indeed. I'd hate to see you finally getting on the water only to spend the next heaven knows how many more videos telling us of the nightmare problems you're stuck with. Hopefully you'll be one of the lucky ones whose boat is top notch as there must be some happy customers out there. Fingers are firmly crossed for you.
Hi Annie, Thanks for thinking of me. ❤️ Yes, Ive been subscribed to Lorna's channel for a long time and have followed the saga of her boat build, as well as looking at Foxglove up close during my visits to Aintree. Her video has drawn a lot of negative comments - and only 1 in support of Aintree that Ive seen so far. I hope that they watch her channel, I believe they do watch mine. I am a member of the Aintree Beetle Facebook group - and have read with interest some of the problems people have had over the years - some little snags, some more serious. Its like buying a new house - there will always be something that isn't exactly right. Before ordering Gladys I did research Aintree Boats, but found nothing really negative - needless to say, if I knew then what I do now... It looks like some Beetle owners appear very happy with their boats - so maybe I'll be lucky. That said, once they tell me she is ready to be delivered, I will visit her before she gets anywhere near the back of a lorry and go through the boat looking for anything that seems wrong. I do have to say I am a little surprised about Lorna's issues - as I believe she had Foxglove surveyed before it left Aintree, and she herself is a qualified Boat Safety Examiner - but still, there is no excuse for the poor workmanship she's reported. EG pencil marks left on the woodwork - I haven't seen any of that on Gladys in my visits. I will also be checking that they have fitted the central heating system that is specced and not a cheap substitute. It's very worrying of course and while I was once full of enthusiasm and excitement, its getting to the point that I'm not looking forward to it at all anymore. After finally getting her on the water, I will make a video about the whole experience... But don't worry, I'm sure to be making lots of other videos as well! Thanks again.👍
Jeff you mentioned the rain we have had our share here in Dunedin NZ, suffered some flooding in the area plus some landslide. This is going to take sometime to clean up, but life goes on have a great week.
Hi Barry. Sorry to hear about that. Its astounding what damage rain can cause - we've had steady prolonged rain lately here, but in some parts of UK there's been some bad flooding. Hope you get through it ok - best of luck. You have a great week too mate! Thanks as always, for watching and commenting 👍
Thats good news Barry! In my last house I had a back yard, and after heavy rain, the water would run into it from the mountainside behind... I know how worrying it can be! All the best 😊
Nice vlog Jeff, We've had two holidays onthe M&B but I wouldn't like to have a boat on there, For me the Ashby would be the one on the main system (we're on the Lanky) I do like that area around the Coventry and North Oxford canals,Hope you get Gladys bottom wet soon ,take care.😊
Thanks Robert! Glad you liked the video - I think I'll end up on the M&B in a few years time, as its close to where I live and easily reachable. But before then, I do want to wander around and I have seen the Ashby on other vlogs - by all accounts a very nice canal - so I'm hoping to get there. I've also seen the Lancaster too - its frustrating knowing about them all, while still waiting for the boat to be completed! But with luck, it won't be much longer now (mind you - I've said that a few times already). Cheers! Jeff

I'd like to see the restored Hereford & Gloucester canal extended down to Abergavenny which is relatively only a short distance. This would improve traffic on both canal systems and could provide cheaper living on boats for younger people.
Hi Graham! I totally agree with you - that would make for a really great network. Hereford to Abergavenny - that would be a beautiful stretch. 'Abergavenny Junction' would be the meeting point! - sounds a lovely idea ...might even be cheaper to do than HS2! If only I was a billionaire... ☹️
Hi Rob, thanks 👍 Yes, I watched it yesterday... a bit worrying. Rest assured, I'll be visiting Gladys at Aintree before she's put on the back of a lorry. Not a good advert for them...☹️
