A writing professor of mine in college said only Neil Simon can go into a closet and come out with a play 24 hours later.
Well this proves Neil spent months and months perfecting his stories. Like the rest of us!

The gold standard for American comedy. "The Odd Couple" and "The Sunshine Boys" would be more than enough for one writer but he had a huge repertoire. One of the greats.

The Odd Couple is a great play. One of my favorites. The film is a classic... His subtle changes of a couple deleted lines and changing few locations with the baseball scene made the film better than the play but the play is still so wonderful.

It's hard to imagine Neil Simon having trouble writing a play, but it just goes to show that masterpieces are not inevitable, immaculate, instant births; they take a long time, a lot of trial and error and error and error to get it right. It only looks easy when it's done.

+Bruce Jackson Agree! This whole writing business can be daunting...But hearing a writer of Mr. Simon's status describe such difficulties, can be quite encouraging:)

I read his book. He had even more trouble getting that 3rd act on its feet that he says here. Must have been hell. But the finished version of that 3rd act was/is as close to perfect as anyone could wish for.

the work of the writer is so underappreciated and underrated by Hollywood or other mediums at times. They don't realize how hard it is to sit down and write a script or a book, especially ones that turn out as giant hits. The Odd Couple was such a simple plot about two completely different guys who live together...that's it and yet it became the biggest and hottest concept ever. Everybody steals from it lol

play writing isn't an exact science. Simon also talks of problems with plaza suite. the whole thing was supposed to be about Sam and Karren Nash, but when he got to the end of the first act, with the lines "is he coming back" "funny you should ask" he knew he should leave the story right there. they didn't want to do a one act play however, so he write three other one acts for the same set.
but that made the play too long, so they got rid of one scene. it was later expanded on to do the film "the out of towners".
