I first sat for piano lessons at 6 years old, then onto violin at 10, guitar in Jr. high, and to this day I can barely play the piano....there was little if any family encouragement...not so with these chaps.....and it shows. Gotta love what you do and do what you love....
Aww, first time I've heard Phil improvise on "The Laird of Drumblair." Here comes Johnny's well known reel version of it with his speed of light triplets carried over from the original strathspey version. I 1st heard the 2nd half of this set from about 10' back, in their mid 1980's US tour in an under publicized bar show near Ohio State U. Our table had a response sufficiently familiar to them that they said they chose to end the evening as they might in Scotland, playing "Mist-Covered Mountains" [accordion solo in the dance scene of the movie "Local Hero"] so we got to end the evening waltzing to these brilliant brothers. RIP Johnny.
Oh, my *tears*. I've not heard this video before and I'm speechless. I was a friend of Johnny's when he was in Boston playing with the Raindogs. This makes my mind spin, just like it did the first time I heard him with Silly Wizard. I wish you Peace, Johnny.

I remember seeing the Chieftains in the '70s perform, "Boil the breakfast early" and being blown away by their exceptional musicianship. Seeing Silly Wizard and the Cunninghams really dials it up further still. There truly are some fabulous Celtic artists performing still (even with Johnny gone) today, both vocally and instrumentally. I think the American listeners are a bit narrow minded in their preferences and are missing the boat. The richness of world music has so much to offer...

I'm familiar with silly Wizard and have enjoyed them very much. Hearing this casts a new light on their music. This is utterly marvelous!
HALF of SIlly Wizard... phenomenal playin' by masters of their respective instruments.
