Wow! This is the exact issue I had! Used the same glue and turned out great. Thank you!

I am doing the same to many areas of my R230. It is a common problem. I tried that adhesive & it is Terrible! It soaks right into the backing & Does Not Hold. I went to the the 3M 77 (just ordered the 90 for greater strength yet) because it tacks up nicely & doesn’t soak in. Another note on this particular car: the glue that holds the backing to the vinyl AND the glue that holds the backing to the car has failed. You need to get the glue onto the back of the vinyl, front & back of the backing, and the surface of the car, then attach when tacky. Now you have something!
Lastly, beware of upward facing tweeter under that clock/vent near the windshield

are you having any issues with the black leather panels wrinkling up? my looks like an old mans scro......well...lets just say loose skin.
I took the car to the desert...it was 115 degrees ever since all the black leather wrinkles up....but not the red leather in the car. I was thinking of using a heat gun and a cold rag to shrink the leather....what do you suggest? Mostly under the passenger window.

I would have left the glue to go more tacky before pushing the two surfaces together
