The difference with Tool is all the power and messaging is internal thinking vs external lashing out like most metal. It's heavy but a 10 min song flies by because it's hypnotic and meditative heavy metal. Hard to explain but I can sleep with Tool on full blast because it's so meditative.

I'm approaching 50 and have liked TOOL since buying their Undertow album in high school in the '90's. I didn't buy another or even keep up with their music for decades after, only getting back into their music again a few years ago. Saw them live for the first time on Halloween in 2023, mostly because it just was good timing, had money to spend on great tickets, and figured this may be the last chance I get to see them live.
Do I regret not keeping up with their music since the Undertow album? No, cuz other things kept my attention. I'm glad I rediscovered them again and went back thru their catalogue to hear more as well as re-examine familiar songs in a new way.. as a lot of people do with many things, not just music.
As stated elsewhere in the comments, this may not have been the best song to introduce someone to TOOL. "Sober" was their breakout single that got me interested, and I enjoyed the whole album. "Ænima", "Stinkfist" and "The Pot" are also much more accessible for a wider audience in a more familiar format. I'm boring and basic but I learned to appreciate deeper music from starting with the basic hits like these. Since their lyrics are more interesting than you may think, I'd suggest you follow them while listening or watch a lyric video. The official videos are very strange and can easily distract you from the music and lyrics. That being said, the lead singer is really just a poet who writes something he feels should fit to the music that the other members have created. He really doesn't take part in the song-writing process until the end, which is uncommon for a lot of bands, but it works great for them.
There are some real bad-faith TOOL fans in your comments section. I used to be a scared nerd who was afraid of metal-heads cuz most of them were just jerks. As I got older, I met some who just wanted to go against the norm, but were good people. Every TOOL fan I've encountered has been great, if a bit obsessed with their favorite band, but that's ok. Please don't let the whiners get to you, they don't speak for all of us. It's great to see a younger generation at least give older music a chance, as I've noticed a lot of today's music is lacking in the authenticity and talented musicianship from days gone, sounding far too over-engineered or over-produced. The younger people like yourself are craving something different and I'm sure you'll find something you really enjoy if you keep hearing something new.

Hey man, glad you checked out Tool, and glad you found some things you liked in the song. Lateralus was a tough one to start with, but think you’d like “The Pot” as a better intro.
Lastly, people find Tool special because their songs are more like “movies of the mind” rather than a short piece on the radio. In my humble opinion if you approach Tool songs like short movies I think you might see some of the magic the rest of us do!
But at the end of the day if it’s not your taste then it’s not your taste! Hope you checked out another couple before your final judgement 😎

Of course I will. I never judge a band by just one song.
I will definitely add The Pot to my list ^^

If your attention span is 3-5 minutes, just pass Tool by. Shame on many levels. Would rather watch those that appreciate a song for what it is. Beethoven’s symphonies, case in point, go on your way ignorant son, just go …

Why do people think my attention span is too short just because I don't like long songs that often just loop.
I love going to orchestra concerts and just listening to them for 1-2 hours, why is my attention span there not so short?
How can you be too stupid to understand that there are simply people who have a different taste in music?

@@MarvinHeartless its not a loop its using a mathematical sequence. Fibonacci sequence
The song's title track incorporates the Fibonacci sequence, which is a sequence of numbers where each number is the sum of the two previous numbers. The song's time signatures change from 9/8 to 8/8 to 7/8, which are numbers from the Fibonacci sequence. Its a spiral. look it up

@@omfgwtfdudelol852 slight correction, 987 is the 16th number of the fibonacci sequence, not 9, 8 and 7. There are quite a few intentional uses of the sequence in this song. It's really a beautiful piece of art. Spiral out, my friend

The thing is with TOOL, it's very complex and ruminating style. It's not just a song but a journey.

Welcome to the journey that is Tool. Danny Carey, the drummer, is arguably the greatest living drummer. Each of the members, though, would easily be the star in any other band. Any time spent with Tool with be time well invested. Spiral out!

You should have done “ Tool - the pot “first to get used to their sound. You should go down the rabbit hole with this group. One of the greatest groups ever created. If you want Shorter songs, you should try their older stuff.

You probably wouldn’t like jazz or classical music either. Beethoven’s 9th is loooong… and doesn’t follow your formulaic idea of what good music is.

You know that I'm approaching my 30s and didn't grow up in the Tik Tok generation.
I can also listen to album after album or watch series without looking at my phone.
And as I said, there are bands that make it like Ne Obliviscaris or Machine Head.

    • @40kedge
      @40kedge 3 дня назад +1

I think we all know the attention span of the younger generation. That said, most Tool songs are exceptionally long. Once one knows and understands this, peoples views generally change for the band. When this stuff came out, a "long" songs were about 3 plus minutes. So , it was a change for us as well. But it is a wonderful change.
