  • Looking above Lock 7, we see the upbound BAIE COMEAU, having just departed Lock 7, passes the downbound FEARLESS, which is approaching Lock 7, on Jun.6, 2018.
As FEARLESS is being lowered in Lock 7, we see that at the same time, there is an upbound ship, STEN MOSTER, being raised in Lock 6 East.
After FEARLESS is lowered in Lock 7, she departs Lock 7, and heads for Lock 6 West to be lowered.
She passes by STEN MOSTER which goes on to enter Lock 7.
All in all, a view of the typical ups and downs on the canal!

FEARLESS (IMO 9228265, seen here registered in "Monrovia") was built in 2001 in Japan, and was originally known as BRIGHT LAKER; her name changed to FEARLESS in 2013.
I have a video of her as BRIGHT LAKER (registered in "Panama" at that time) on the Welland Canal from 2012, see: • Ship BRIGHT LAKER meet...

I’m amazed how high they ride empty. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them riding deep. Even full they still ride high in the water. Fascinating to watch.

I have seen Wigeon in the past. I had posted several vids of her. Here's one from 2016 (see ruclips.net/video/o4JzBoTiEUU/видео.html ) and she had "Monrovia" on her aft end as the port.

At Lock 3 there is a viewing platform which offers a great view of the ships; also at the upper end of Lock 7 there is also a great close up viewing area.

ive heard in the future the government might consider putting a third lane in for ships over 1000 feet or more to enter the seaway it be cool to see some of the thousand footers you see in duluth michigan and on the st mary ans st clair river

There were plans years ago that the Canadian federal govt. was going to build a parallel new "super canal", with a deeper cut and fewer locks. They even expropriated huge acreages of farm land in the 1960's along the present canal, for the planned new one. Lately, they've started selling some of the lands they had once expropriated.
There are still people around in St.Catharines and other nearby cities whose families were forced to move, and whose former farmland is now being sold off. Frankly, i don't know if Canada can afford to build another canal.

@@RightInNiagara ive heard rumors that the federal gov still wants to put in this channel but its still in planning if they build it in the future it will allow ships over 7050 in length to get down the welland canal

@@jakeeves2149 I think that IF they had done it when they FIRST "planned it" - 50 YEARS AGO!!!! - it would have been so much less expensive than it would be now.
The cost of this project would be stupendous.
And the question is: do we REALLY need to build a new canal to accommodate 1000 footers?? Because the Seaway is a system, it still means the entire Seaway system downbound from the Welland Canal would ALSO need to be rebuilt to a 1000+ footer standard..
And: the govt. hasn't done THAT yet, either.
So why bother building a new Welland canal, if those 1000 footers still wouldn't be able to get to the ocean? All it would do is just allow them to get from where they are now, 'trapped' so to speak, in the Upper Great Lakes, to Lake Ontario basically. - but not all the way to salt water.
SO: if the govt was serious about setting a new 1000+ foot standard, then they ought to be putting their money where their mouth is, and find the cash to rebuild the St.Lawrence River portion of the Seaway FIRST, not the Welland Canal portion first.

While I think it would be super cool to see the 1,000 footers pass by my hometown of Buffalo and go through the Welland Canal, they are limited in quantity, correct? Like less than 15 of them? That's a lot of money for very few ships. I know there's some shorter ones like Roger Blough at 850ft that would also be accommodated, but the real value would be the St Lawerance Seaway to expand the range, and also allow larger "salties" to go upbound, if demand (and accompany fees revenue) is large enough.

Try going to the north side of the lock doors to the actual lock. Amazing as the ships rise or lower with the water in the lock.

Because that area's fenced, it's difficult to get a good view of the north side of Lock 7's upper gate.

RightInNiagara That's too bad. Some years ago we had British cousins there and could have reached over to shake hands with the crew. What an amazing site to see those same people raised up about 30' - 40' in minutes. Some great shots of the canal for folks who've never been there.
