  • This video contains the opening sequence and episode teasers from the 1959-1963 ABC-TV series "The Untouchables," starring Robert Stack as real-life Chicago-based Prohibition agent Eliot Ness. The series was based on the 1957 Ness memoir "The Untouchables," ghostwritten by Oscar Fraley. What I had forgotten was that newspaper columnist Walter Winchell served as the show's narrator.

Wow! hearing this goes through me life a KNIFE. I was born in 1953 and this show had a huge influence on me -- key in that influence was the power of the music. As a kid I had never heard music of such intensity and force. I LOVED this show like I could never possibly explain!

... '' for its time'' Really!? It shows you were not a contemporary of those times, or, had a deep understanding of someone who was! People that 'owned' that era, as adult citizens of it, ie the 1930's up until about the 1950's, are/were just the most amazing people, in general! And so Film and TV show makers of that era were amazingly creative; really knowing how to fit the complexities of life into powerful hard hitting simple expressions of that; as all true artists do. The so called 'film artists' of today, for the most part, are not of the same creative calibre.

In the 70s when I was a young lad (oh how time fly's) I would look at the TV guide and see what time it was on, usually on Wednesday about 11:30pm sometime 11:45 on ITV. Back then the TV would shut down about midnight. Well I would wait until my parents where in bed and I could sneak down stairs trying to avoid them two creeking steps. TV on and wait for it to start and with no adverts unlike today 3mins of program and 8 mins of advertising. Robert stack is the only Elliott Ness I liked. Great true stories and learned a bit of some history about the real gangsters on that time. 👍😁 Would like to watch them all again.🙏🤓👍

This serious was in my opinion unfairly accused of being racist against Italians. In fact the series frequently had Jewish gangsters, Irish gangsters etc, Bugs Moran was actually born to French-Canadian parents and changed his name. It never once claimed all gangsters were Italian or all Italians were gangsters in fact most of the victims of the Italian mobsters were other Italians. Which BTW is normal. Ethnic groups mostly commit crimes against their own.
The only time the word "Mafia" was ever used was in an episode I think must have been especially written to tweek the critics as Ness said it every chance he could. Never had before and never did after. They killed off an agent so they could replace him with an Italian actor playing an Italian character. In reality Eliot Ness only lost one agent in the line of duty.
There are many actors as gangsters and victimes probably better know for their later comedy parts, for example future cast members of Gilligan's Island and Bewtiched (it was weird seeing Samantha dating her husband's boss) . Also star of both radio and TV versions of The Life of Riley made a scary gangster. Just proves a good actor is a good actor,
