I'm getting my first boat next week and it's a gp14. I don't know a thing about sailing and have spent lots of time of RUclips trying to figure out rigging. This is the best video on RUclips. Fantastic
Thank you for the most helpful explanation. I’m presently working on a slab reefing system on my new to me Montgomery 15, which will be very similar to your set up. I read somewhere that a 45 degree angle was the sweet spot to aim for in terms of the reefing line at the clew and small pulley block, which your red first reef line clearly demonstrated.
Again, thanks for watching and I'm glad it was of use. It took me three attempts to get that sweet spot right and what a difference it made to the speed at which I can put one or both reefs in while at sea. :)
Just found your channel and as a beginner with a new to me wanderer dinghy im finding all you videos so informative and gleaning so much information. Ive got to say your attention to detail for me is revelation. thanks so much for doing these videos. in a word thankyou.
@@jameswrethman5375 Thank you, very kind words and I’m glad they are useful. The Wanderer is a very similar boat so there is relevance. Enjoy your sailing and thanks for watching, much appreciated.
Excellent! I was thinking something similar, and I like the cam cleat on boom. I am putting a spinnaker pole storage on boom, so there will be more junk to deal with.
If your boom is more the square profile then you can run the reefing lines inside the boom with the use of sheaves, that will free up space for your spinnaker pole(s).
Great video, did you buy the sail with the reefing points in it or did you modify an old sail and add the eyelets and strengthening patches yourself please? Thanks Dan.
@@sailingskismo brilliant, thank you. I have a spare main sail for my GP14. I think I’ll do the same. Thanks for clearly explaining your setup. Happy sailing ⛵️😊
Hi, it’s a Typhoon, breathable with closed feet and neoprene cuffs and collar. I would be wary of getting one with closed feet though ( same material as the rest of the suit ) as mine seeps through already and it isn’t that old. If I were buying new now, I would go for built-in boots or stick with built-in latex socks. My previous typhoon dry suit was amazing, lasted me 20 years! This one however, I feel won’t match up to that.
have a catalina 22 and agree that the reefing S- hooks attached to the mast are very difficult to use! this is a good video. i'm still on the steep upward climb on the learning curve when it comes to reefing which is imperative for winter sailing here in the PNW. bravo sailing skismo!
Finally getting round to set up something similar on my GP14 - how do you attach cleats, fairleads to the boom and the mast? I'm debating between rivets and tapping. Another question, is there any benefit using a cam cleat instead of clamcleat for the reefing line?
Hi, I use rivets to attach things to the boom, primarily because it is a quick way to do so. Also, the rivets are the same metal as the boom so less risk of galvanic corrosion. Nothing wrong with tapping and using threadlock but do use marine grade screws otherwise they will rust and weaken. As far as cleats go: I prefer cam cleats on warps under a lot of strain, I’ve used clam cleats in the past and they have failed to hold in heavy conditions. That may have been down to how I had the warp running into them or maybe a slight mismatch of size. If I ever get around to it, I will run my reef lines inside the boom to tidy it all up a bit.
Wise words, I am going to copy this on my wayfarer, and practise reefing down on the water on a calm-ish day, rather than under pressure ;)
That's a jolly good idea! Best of luck with it :)

That’s very kind of you to say, I’m glad it is of use. It is a great boat, I have two! 🤓⛵️

Perfect day to describe your reefing set up.
Yes! A tad breezy 😬
Well done on this. I’ve been looking for an instructional video like it for some time. It’s perfect for setting up similar on my wayfarer. Thank you.
You're welcome, glad it is of some use. Thank you for watching :)

Great job explaining your reefing setup - I'll definitely use your system to setup my reefing rig; thanks!

Hi, I had the reefing points put in by a sail loft. It was cheaper than buying the tools and materials to do it myself. 😊

Thank you William, and thanks for watching. The PNW is one place I would love to dinghy cruise!
Well, I thought that Hindu rope trick of yours at 8:36 was "a little bit amusing," too...
Ha, I should have been playing a pungi while I was doing that! lol
Extremely neat! One question - I noticed your mast gate is open, is it intentional?
Hi, yes it is intentional. My mast is raked ever so slightly aft and so the gate won’t close. I only close it when I’m stepping the mast.

@@sailingskismo thanks, a good point about the corrosion
He uses tiger clips for refin but I cannot see them on eBay can somebody tell me where to purchase them from guys
Tyga clips were purchased from tridentuk, a uk based chandlers
