  • Soldering silver and gold is one of the techniques that you really need to perfect if you want to make professional looking jewellery. One of the items to look at is flux, flux helps to protect the surface and to enable the solder to flow.
    For over 30 years, Andrew has been using borax as his favourite flux. Find out why he prefers this flux to all the other types of commercial flux on the market.

    A mortar and pestle and laundry borax works very well too.
    For some projects I also add boric acid (locally as roach & insect toxin) to help with scale.

    Hi Andrew, I just love all of your videos - they are so helpful and full of details. Thank you for that! Now I have a question about borax flux. I have a borax cone that's quite brittle and while moving it in circles in my borax dish it looses big chunks. Now I thought of grinding the cone into fine powder, then mix it with water and keep it as prepared borax in a closed glass? Is this a good option, or am I thinking wrong?

      To satisfy my own curiosity, if you aren't opposed to sharing, what substance is traditionally used as flux?
      The only thing that comes to mind would be pine rosin, but I don't envision many pine trees in the southwest.
      I, myself, typically use specially treated borax as a flux for forge welding and brazing.
      It's not much of a secret to blacksmiths, but I dunno about everyone else, so I'll share.
      Throw enough borax in a cast iron skillet to cover the bottom, sit it in the forge until it melts, wait until it's cool & chip it out, then crush it into a powder for use.
      To use it, heat up the piece to be welded/brazed & dip it in the powder.

    I currently use Handy-flux as it is simply what I stared with, and the jar that I have will probably last me a decade I think. I see your point about the borax cone being quick and simple and easy to use but at the same time my jar of handy-flux is as simple as opening the lid and dipping my brush. So my first question to you is (being that you are a professional jeweler who I’m sure has tried handy-flux or similar products), is their any advantage (or difference) in the actual soldering process using a straight borax cone and water as opposed to a product like handy-flux or is it just preference. I also know that when I initially purchased my handy-flux the salesman told me that this was a great flux for silver but if I wanted to solder gold I should get a different kind of flux for that specifically. So my second question is, is straight borax from a cone universal amongst metals for soldering (and superior), as other types of products like handy-flux are more specialized for specific metals (causing you to have to purchase more products for different processes) because logic would have me think that a product designed for a specific purpose (or metal) would be superior to a general all purpose type of a product? Thank you in advance for all your knowledge and all you do, I follow all your videos.

    • @samburgett7309
      @samburgett7309 5 лет назад

      From what I've heard, straight borax isn't as toxic (the fumes) because it doesn't have all the additives of the other fluxes.

    • @---Blue
      @---Blue 2 года назад

      Borax as a flux is used quite widely, it is the flux you use while forge welding damascus pattern steel and the same stuff that you can use for silver as well. Metal specific products such as Handy flux or some other flux, have different melting/bubbling temperatures for different metals, the job to keep oxygen off the surface is universal for flux. Though yes handy flux and flux paste may contain fluorides which the more basic 'raw' borax may lack making borax relatively harmless to breathe compared to flux pastes

    Hi, Im confused about the different applications of BORAX (whether powder or cone) verses BORIC ACID (whether powder or granule). Are these applications correct: Boric acid powder & denatured alcohol @ 50/50 mix=good fire scale dip? Borax powder sprinkled in new crucible=good to prime crucible before use?.... as well as... Borax powder sprinkled into crucible with silver or gold=good to melt it down? What about using Boric Acid powder when melting metals? In this video, you suggest using your dried up cone slurry to sprinkle in while melting metals, so I assume it can also be used to prime a new crucible. Would I paint on wet slurry or wait till my slurry dries and sprinkle it on? And if I don't have Borax powder, is the slurry (whether wet or dried) really ok to use when melting metals? Because there's still water content in it. The torch heat will evaporate the water content obviously, but when I'm melting silver or gold, should I sprinkle the dried slurry into the crucible before the metal to evaporate that water content? Or is it ok to heat up the metal first, then sprinkle?

    • @tedmosby9409
      @tedmosby9409 3 года назад

      Yh am a bit confused, but I have done a lot of soldering with different types of flux they all do same job my guess is , it wont matter along as it makes contact with the metal and just probably want to crush some and sprinkle it on the area
