This unique tutorial was a family event where my wonderful partner of many years Cathryn Wellner joined me to solve this puzzle. I hope you enjoyed it. We did.
NOTE ABOUT ADDING SMALL NUMBERS. We solved this puzzle without putting any small numbers in. It was categorised as a difficult puzzle. I must warn players that the time comes when solving very difficult puzzles entering all possible numbers in an empty cell is needed, as once this is done there are many tricks and procedures you can use in order to solve. If you believe you can solve a very difficult puzzle without small numbers you will need an incredible memory. I provide many adanced trick from tutorial 79 and above. This is when you are stuck and have to enter all possible little numbers in empty cells.

I am a post-grad student and right now I am preparing for PhD entrance exams. Eairlier when I would get bored, I would just take a break and waste time on facebook.
Now I take sudoku break bw evey 2-3 hrs if study.
It has helped me a lot in focus and patience.

Happy to 'report' i just finished my first beginner level Sudoku. I never thought I'd be able to do one. I bought 2 Sudoku books yesterday, tried and failed about 4, 5 games,, watched more of your tutorials, and finally, I didn't give up this time around and succeeded! I find it just as relaxing as reading a detective story: thinking of plots and possibilities, and narrowing them down.

This was a neat puzzle. Some difficulty to it, not too many clear digits to place at the start, but it gets easier as you progress. I did not use candidates, just went along notation free in 13 minutes. Most enjoyable. Thanks for publishing this.

First, I just want to THANK YOU ! Sudoku can be so confounding, but thanks to your teaching style and VERY positive attitude , I keep on learning and trying new puzzles! (I'm still a beginner or low level intermediate.) Not only are you helping me learn Sudoku, but you are helping me learn one enjoyable way to keep my brain young as I get older !!
I really enjoyed meeting Cathryn and seeing a different perspective on puzzle solving; what a great team-- she is inspiring as well !
I have just one request: it is for more practice puzzles!! so that I can work them (or attempt to ) myself and then watch to see how you solve them start to finish. I have bought a LOT of Sudoku books on Amazon and other places but sometimes I can't solve them and have to leave it not knowing how they arrived at the solution in the back. SO frustrating !! Please help!! THANK YOU AGAIN and all the best! :)
Thanks so much for your comments and thoughts.Kristin Here is a suggestion: go to the app store on the computer and put in "Enjoy Sudoku" by Jason Linhart. the paid "heart " version. Scroll down until you find this app. The price is worth it. This gives you many puzzles and help you learn by telling you what to look for when you click on hint. Many other sites force you to quit after 3 errors...Don't touch any of these apps. this apps gives you many levels of difficulty and I have found it very helpful. Some books are better than others. I have found that Bill Swarts is good. Many books tend to use only one set of sudoku techniques. Jason has most techniques you need. I don't know whether you have watched all of my videos as I cover many tricks and techniques. Here is the list of my videos. Sorry if you already have looked at all of them. All the best.

Yes, I was a music specialist in schools. Have played piano since I was 10 yrs. I wrote a book on "How to play piano by ear" I still play piano at restaurants and social events even though I am now 82 I am slowing down.

I have a couple of electronic, hand-held Sudoku games. Neither game unit allows me to put in the little numbers. The way Catherine is solving this puzzle is how I go about solving the puzzles on those hand-held games. Thanks for another fun video!

To improve on your guest's method, I would first look for rows, columns and boxes with 4 or more filled in. Then come back to do rows, columns, and boxes 1 to 9. Then I repeat with starting back at ones having 4 or more filled in. And doing so, as more are filled in I will look at all 3 at the same time (rows, columns, and box) Then after a couple hours I get frustrated and move on to the next puzzle. lol

My favorite 1 of the 100 (that's a pun)! Each of the previous ones (pun) dropped to 99% favorite status.
Catherine's method is very effective at training the mind to see the important numbers in context among the matrix. Also, these big numbers once found and written down are no longer among the crowd of little numbers that can easily be left out or misplaced. I mark them so that if I make a mistake later, I won't have such a hard time figuring out where I made the mistake. I just write in the big number and put a dot in a corner of the cell, indicating that this number's validity has been verified before the little numbers were put in.
Another major benefit of using the "Catherine Method" is that those cells are filled so that more opportunities exist for TMB, LCR, cross-meet, or ramifications to find one empty cell where a number could go instead of two or three . (Sorry if I spelled her name wrong. I went by the CC spelling).
I used to print the answer sheet so I could find the original mistake, but that didn't make sense, so I started discarding puzzles when I knew I had made a mistake I couldn't immediately fix. Now I benefit from logically determining what caused me to make the mistake (little numbers almost always the culprit).
