I work for an elevator company and I answer calls like this all the time, this kid is adorable. Some people get so scared when they accidentally press the button, but there's no need. Just let us know you're ok and we don't mind one bit! Happens a lot!
Hey dude, it's ok, mistakes happen, but you should remain calm and telling the person on the phone you accidentally pressed the phone button is the right thing to do!
@@Jamestube8439 Where I live (Sweden) there is only an alarm button, which in more modern lifts acts like the phone button in American lifts. But in older lifts in Sweden, it just rings a bell.
Hey man. Accidents happen which if it were on purpose that would be different. I’m glad the agent was understanding and that’s exactly how I would have been if it were an accident. And also you did exactly the right thing.
That is one of the worst spots to put a phone button on an elevator panel. The emergency buttons should be completely separated from the main controls like floor selection and the doors.
Imagine how many calls the lift company/emergency services get from careless people who don't pay attention and press the phone instead of door close. They should really have put the phone where the alarm is, below the buttons that will be pressed a lot. (I think this phone called 911) Here in the UK, and pretty much any European country, the phone is connected to the alarm button, where holding it down for 3, 5, or 10 seconds (depending on the lift's make and model) triggers the phone. Also, the button is yellow and usually at the top/bottom of the panel.
Its not your fault. For starts the Emergency Call button was the same hue as all the rest. it should be RED or something eye catching. And that was a nice panel :p
Unfortunately this is a very common problem with gen 1 and 2 Otis elevators. Thankfully Otis has fixed this problem with some of their gen 1 and 2 elevators but some still have this problem.
Congratulations on having one of RUclips's most viewed elevator videos! (possibly in the top 100 most viewed elevator videos, maybe even top viewed that isn't one of DieselDucy's videos). Do you know if this video was shared by someone on any popular websites like Reddit? I once had a video suddenly get a lot of views from that. Did this video gain the views largely at a certain point, or over time? I don't think this video is fake at all. I assume maybe people think that because they don't see a reason to be recording an elevator (as many people don't know about elevator photography), or maybe they don't think anyone could accidentally hit the phone button (obviously that can happen, in fact that happened to me once back in 2009 or 2010 off camera, also on an Otis elevator with Series 1 fixtures). It went similar to this video, I told the person who answered that I accidentally hit the phone button, and he then said something, maybe something like "Oh, okay, have a nice day", and then hung up.
Where i live there is just an alarm button, which in newer elevators will activate the phone (normally it requires the button to be pressed for anything from 3 to 20 seconds, most often its 5 or 10 seconds, but i have known it to activate after a single press) I have witnessed an “oops” with the alarm button (someone else in the elevator was leaning against the panel, and the elevator suddenly started saying to remain calm and that it will call for help (and a yellow “alarm activated” indicator lit up below the floor display, when the call was answered it changed to a green “speak to operator” indicator))
that operator was really sweet when he told that little boy when he accidentally pressed the emergency phone bottom in the elevator that it was OK because that was an accident
0:30 so we were going to fi... **pressed call for help** BAM! Elevator:You Activated Call For help Video owner: CRAP!! CRAP!! CRAP!! NO! DAWN IT!! NGHHHH
To be fair, putting the emergency phone button DIRECTLY BELOW the door control buttons was probably a poor life choice on the part of the engineering team. they probably get all sorts of crap calls from elevators like this. I know in Europe you actually have to press and hold the button for ~5 seconds before it dials the call out.
I think you would know that the door close button doesn't close the doors. It simply deactivates the door sensors. Once you press and HOLD the door close button, if you wave your hands through the doors while they are closing, they will not open back up. Therefore, it wasn't necessary to press the door "close" button in the first place. ALSO, Near the top of the elevator (by the floor indicator panel) there is a button "call cancel" which you can clearly see at 1:13 You could have easily pressed that. I'm no expert when it comes to elevators, but it's not rocket science. Epic fail, I think so. BUT I completely agree; the door close and call button should NOT be placed that close. The call button should be distinguished by a different color, or size, and in a different place. I feel that it should also have a cover over it so it is not accidentally activated. BUT, the call button in large complex's (such as a condo building) usually does not call the police department. Usually they call the front desk, and the receptionist. Then there is a timer, where if the front desk does not receive the call THEN the police department is called. Therefore there was not really a reason to panic a whole lot. (which you didn't) They get activated all the time. So it wouldn't be worth while to send a fire truck, and ambulance EVERYTIME it was activated. nice vid....
I believe both things you just described are fire service only and call cancel cancels the floor that it was going to, and the elevator will stop at the next floor.
12 years later and this video still makes me laugh, the golden birthday of this hilarious video when you accidentally pressed the emergency phone button would have been on July 9, 2021. Also I believe it is the Otis company’s fault for placing the phone button just right below the door close button.
Is anybody able to tell me what it said is soon as the call button on the phone was pushed? I couldn’t quite make it out. And what did the lady say when she answered? Did she say 911 where is your emergency?
if that happened to me i'd probably have a panic attack and maybe feel sick and i would probably just stutter at the agents and then i would run and look for the nearest chair to sit down and have a 1 hour long anxiety attack
