The One Thing Amphibia Did Wrong That The Ghost and Molly McGee Did Right

  • Despite having two different premises, Amphibia and The Ghost and Molly McGee are my two favorite Disney cartoons with a good amount of similarities. One of these similarities was their bittersweet endings. While I acknowledge that Amphibia has a better finale overall, there is a glaring fault with it that Molly McGee managed to overcome

    The endings of both Amphibia and The Ghost and Molly McGee are very sad with the main friend duos going their separate ways. I have to agree with you with Anne and Sprig being forced to go their separate ways because Anne and her other 2 friends, Sasha and Marcy, had only one way back to Earth. And also with Molly and Scratch choosing to go their separate ways because Scratch regained his memories and finds out he's not really dead and Molly encouraged him to go back into his body and live his life. I still wish The Ghost and Molly McGee got a season 3.

    This video does make a fair point about omega Domino's role in Anne's goodbye to the Plantar family and Amphibia, but the series always made it feel like Anne leaving Amphibia and the Plantar family was inevitable. I still enjoy both finales of these shows and both sets of goodbyes.

  • @sasamichan

    Amphibia is IMO , way more emotional and still open to a possible return to that world. Ghost and Molly McGee aside from me wanting more story between the 2nd to last and last episode, felt like a solid END to that series. A series that COULD continue as "Molly McGee and friends" but would no longer be "The Ghost and Molly McGee" unless we kill some one off and that would be kind of dark. I would love to bring the characters back but we could never see Scratch and 12 year old Molly reunited. At least Anne and Sprig could maybe see each other again if Terry gets a portal to work. Or if an other magical some thing or an other gets dug up.
    A better comparison I think is Scratch vs Grunkle Stan, who had the better ending?
    also I would argue Scratch was "Killed off"

    • @ToonyTails
      @ToonyTails 5 месяцев назад

      I 100% agree with your point that it would weird to continue the show after “The End” but with the way that episode is written, it’s almost entirely separate from the reset of season 2. Like literally none of the events from “Jinx vs. The Ghost World” were acknowledged and honest to god could have taken place ANYWHERE after “Nightmares on Fright Street”. You could really just move the episode from season 2 and make it the season 3 finale which no real short comings. So theoretically the show COULD continue if they simply decided to change the episode order.

  • @katie15732
    @katie15732 5 месяцев назад +10

    Amphibia's whole thing was change, and change shows how things don't last forever, so it makes sense that Anne and Sprig separated their ways. While TGAMM's thing was about living life (I think), and it ended with Scratch choosing to life again. So, I think both finales work well for their respective shows.

  • @Splat654

    So, to simplify , Amphibia's separation had a plot hole, while Molly MGee didn't. In Amphibia, the god could have given Anne more power crystals, but we never have a proper explanation why they chose not and why they gave the crystals to the Amphibians to begin with. Even if it was explained, it was weak, so we have a plot hole. But that's the thing, Molly Mgee is a slice of life show with a little magical side to it. Amphibia is an Isekai. It is generally easier for MollyMgee to write characters separation because they have only one world, one timeline, so their story structure is much simpler, which makes it stronger. While in Amphibia, there's 2 worlds, 2 timelines at least and and generally, the world and story structure is more complicated. If creators had more time and less shenanigans from Disney executives, I am sure they could have written it better. Either way, they did great. And, it's a reminder to us that you dont need an ideal polished story to make a cartoon, comics, or a book. Because a published story is better than the ideal one that just lives in your head.

    • @juanrisa945
      @juanrisa945 5 месяцев назад +1

      Outside of "the incident", Amphibia wasn't touched by Disney executives. The series ended where and how it did by the team's own choice.

  • @Umbra_of_Emberspike

    While I agree that Omega Domino amounted to little more than a plot device, I think the virtually permanent separation between humans and Amphibians was inevitable even if the writing was more organic and less forced by OD. The choice to split up in TGAMM was a really nice perspective shift though.
    Immediately after All In first aired, right around when I first joined the Amphibia wiki, my most constant prediction, however THT would play out, was that there would be a permanent separation no matter what. Yes, I wish there was more of a choice to separate, but maybe the lesson is that there's not always a choice in the matter of separating. Sometimes, the healthy thing is to play the cards you're dealt and accept the path that's been laid out for you, no matter how little leeway there is.

    But the tearjerker endings (and the shows in general) were one of my top favorites in my Top 10 alongside Gravity Falls, the Owl House, Ninjago, ATLA, and The Loud House (mainly the movie, but some episodes of the show as well).

  • @LauraM96829
    @LauraM96829 5 месяцев назад +2

    I think Ghost and Molly McGee would’ve improved with more buildup to its ending of scratch and Molly going their separate ways. With Amphibia, we knew from the beginning that anne and sprig might eventually have to say goodbye just because they live in separate worlds. Ghost and Molly McGee only had one episode to show scratch’s past and then immediately have him go back to living.
    I would’ve liked more episodes in between scratch regaining his memories just to have the characters contemplate what it would mean for scratch to go back to living and potentially not remember them. Although that might be disneys fault for canceling the show. Maybe season 3 would’ve had more episodes to think about whether the risk of scratch living and forgetting Molly is worth it or not.

    i just rewatched the molly mcgee goodbye scene. it didn't make me cry for some reason, but it did make me sad. i can't remember what my first reaction to the amphibia finale was, but i feel like that one hit a little harder. i don't know, the molly mcgee one feels like a goodbye for now, while amphibia feels like a goodbye forever. although with amphibia, they did get to amphibia from earth without the box, so there is a slim chance there. and mollly mcgee, i suppose it's like a toy story 3 thing, that you don't know for sure if they will meet up or when they'll meet up again. but it feels like more of a hard choice to help a friend, even if it means you'll lose touch with them for some time.

    my idea for how I would end TGAMM is Scratch would realise he has a better life as a Wraith but would still choose to meet up with Adia again and in order to do that he reveals the existence of Ghosts to the world, setting up future plot points and villains (this is a universe where The End was S2's finale and S3 wasn't cancelled)

    • @ToonyTails
      @ToonyTails 5 месяцев назад

    Here's what I don't understand about Amphibia: they *know* how to create a portal from earth to Amphibia. There is nothing stopping them from making a new portal now that it's destroyed. Yes, it uses a crazy amount of power, but if that's the only cost, that's very manageable. It seems likely Anne would be be able to return in her lifetime.

    Also I feel EXACTLY the same way about the Guardian as a whole. They're a cool concept and decent character but they always felt like a weird out of place element in a show like Amphibia. I know that show has it's anime references with Dragon ball Z and Naruto here and there and It's supposed to reference the anime that I don't specifically know the name of but even on my first it still felt weirdly inserted in, and the only foreshadowing was from a drugged Anne at the end of Catsitting.

    I’m gonna be honest here while both finales did nail the parting ways trope, I think Amphibia did it better than Molly McGee. Don’t get me wrong Molly McGee’s ending was great with Scratch finally going back to living and going to see the world. Amphibia however had the more emotional impact for me and here is why.
    You see, even though, that Anne made friends and a found family in Wartwood, it was inevitable that she had to go back home now as a changed person, she knew that there was a chance that things were bound to change. Heck, when you remove the whole Omega Domino plot line of the finale, the trio were still gonna go home at the end of the finale. Heck, the previous episode, All In was pretty much building towards it as well. Numerous times in fact! Which is why when the moment finally came, my brother and I were in tears that night, so much so that it actually reminded me of when Frodo left Middle Earth at the end of The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King.
    Now I am not saying that Molly McGee’s ending is bad, in fact it was still great, but the thing is because the penultimate episode and the final episode felt completely distant from one other, and I mean it in a metaphorical sense, where it didn’t felt complete and not much closure happened outside of our two leads.
    Now with that said, I still thought both goodbyes in both shows were excellent and felt conclusive on that end, even if one was a lot more conclusive than the other.

  • @daniapfel2825

    Despite the two endings was greats i’m for The Ghost and Molly MgGee because for 2 reasons
    1 The finale was made after the battle. Yeah we saw so many shows ending with a battle but why not a finale post battle ? I think we need more of that
    2 It was so real . Like Scratch alias Tood was in a boring and sad adulthood which is the adulthood is like this and that handled depression and introvert very well. Like we saw Todd start to quit his body after his friend don’t contact him anymore. That show so that like Bojack said: You don’t realise you have the chance until the chance goes away. He was the chance for being with her friend during those years but doesn’t realise until he lost her.

    Honestly, I hated the end of Amphibia and I mean the last few minutes. She took the risk that she knew could kill her, it did but then she came back to life. The risk meant nothing, the sacrifice felt cheap and pointless.
    TGAMM on the other hand, they knew Scratch might not remember her and they followed through with it. Sure he remembered a phrase or two but he didn’t remember her.
    In the end Amphibia didn’t really follow through with the consequences and TGAMM did.

When Patty died, she didnt have any regerts and passed away peacefully. when todd dies, he most likely wont have any unfinished business cuz hes already done it by travelling around the world with Adia. I did not see The Ghost and Molly McGee's big twist coming until literally the beginning of the finale, and I didn't know that the show had been cancelled until the day I watched it, so it was quite the emotional ride! I'm definitely still a little bitter that Disney cancelled yet another great series for no good reason, but I'm definitely grateful that the showrunners fought so hard to get one last episode to wrap up the story. I had not considered how the show technically gave more agency to its main duo than Amphibia when it came to how they separated, it's really interesting to see that pointed out! I love both series a whole lot, I have a lot of great memories watching them with my little brother, and I think it'd be fair to say thay they're both a part of what inspired me to enroll in film school to study animation. I wasn't familiar with your channel until now, and it was great getting to see these two shows compared to each othee on a deeper level than just talking about how one's more episodic or serialized than the other, so thanks very much for your thoughtful analysis!
