The tree has been felled but isn't dead. Sycamores definitely can regenerate. provided its protected from disturbance for a couple of years it will regrow some new trunks and will fill the space that it once occupied. It is tragic to have lost its existing crown but it will grow back with a new shape and this hopefully will only be a part and not the end of its story. look at all the love it has received its Beautiful. lets protect the stump and hopefully the tree will regenerate in the spring.
When Pancras Square in Kings Cross was redeveloped, they transported a 12 metre high, 63 years old oak tree from Germany, and planted it just south of Pancras Square, outside the German Gymnasium. It will eventually grow to 20 metres. Something similar could be done here to restore the iconic landscape value of Sycamore Gap. If not a native species, then a maple would be faster growing than a sycamore, with a similar shape. (Sycamore is a naturalised non-native species introduced long after Hadrian's Wall was built.)
If its anything like the grey squirrel (also not native) ring barked sycamore's in my garden, they do not die easily and it will be sprouting from the stump.
Sadly I don't think that's possible because it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's actually quite marshy around there, the access to the site is limited, and you can't dig around the area because it's a Roman archeological site. But moreso the ecosystem the tree actually contained was built up over hundreds of years and is now lost. All of the lichen, moss, insect homes, fungi, etc. It's irreplaceable although we should replant a sycamore again I think.
Its done all the time and so not a big deal.... so long as someone is paying the big money to do it. My guess it it'll cost near on £500k to get this replaced concidering where its located. I hope the kids mummy and daddy have big pockets
I am from Scotland, but my wife and I returned from Northumberland just this week after a great holiday. It was not our first trip to the area as we fell in love with Northumberland last year when we visited the sycamore gap. We walked with our dog from Housesteads Roman Fort, which is a fair distance, but we loved every single second of it and the reward at the end was to see and touch that beautiful tree. The memories of that day will live with us forever. However I was horrified to hear the news and to see the pictures of the tree now lying on it’s side, made me feel physically sick. Whether they catch whoever did this or not, sadly doesn’t matter because the damage is done. The tree should regenerate from the stump, but it won’t look the same and we won’t see it fully grown in our lifetime. 😢
@@Vingulwell I mean that's a bit harsh. I'm sure they will regret it but he's just a lad. He's not going to be able to live this down. He certainly didn't work alone. It probably wasn't even his idea. He just took the fall for it.
My family and I have recently moved to the North East and fell in love with the special place that is the Sycamore Gap. This was very devastating news to hear earlier today.. some people just want to see the world burn. I hope those responsible are found and are prosecuted to the fullest extent of our law. Thank you Tony for the update.
what will be the benefit of prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law(whatever that means) other than taking your anger and thirst for revenge out on a 16 year old?
I am truly disgusted and saddened by this crime. Note to all Brits; plant trees. My one quarter acre home plot here in Aurora Colorado has 20 trees. All planted by me by SEED. My condolences. Also, take cuttings from that tree and root them.
Lol! American acting like everyone in the rest of the world has a spare 1.5acres spare Lol. Most British kids don't even get to see a proper sunset let alone have the opportunity to plant a tree. Americans really do live in their own little filtered world huh
As a main theme of our late Queen's 70th jubilee celebrations, there is an organised tree planting operation across the UK. We Brits love our trees and it's only vandals like this young lad who have no respect for nature and our landscape who spoil things.
It's exactly because a lot of people cannot imagine (myself included) that this type of person exists that there are a lot of people asking why. Now let's hope that the damage the person has done to themself can be corrected as much as possible.
The people that done this clearly don't care what others think, well, at this point they might be starting to be concerned but I doubt it's for the right reasons. Be interesting to see what happens with that wood...
I don't understand how anyone can take pleasure in destroying such a symbol. I am so ashamed for humanity which is capable of generating individuals devoid of empathy, intelligence, respect for nature. I am from New Caledonia and I am touched in my heart like you.
They let the governmental administer experimental vaccines, amd victims of war based on non existant weapons of mass destruction invade our country, they won't do nothing
I'm guessing this will get charged as criminal damage, which carries up to 10 years in prison. Typical sentences go from nothing to four years, depending on aggravating and mitigating factors. If as reported, the perpetrator is 16 years old, then they have one mitigating factor of impetuous youthful foolishness, and a ton of aggravating ones. They must have carefully planned this in advance, so they had plenty of opportunity to think this through, they didn't do it on the spur of the moment. Also the landscape value of the tree set in a National Park next to a national monument. The way the tree was felled could have potentially damaged the national monument, and vandalism in a National Park has to carry a higher penalty than vandalism in some derelict industrial wasteland. I'll bet a pound (my betting limit) on a 30 months and one day custodial sentence (to take it over the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 'never spent' threshold).
Hopefully his photo makes it online somehow, then those impacted by his vandalism might have the opportunity to remind him of the error of his ways, should they accidentally meet him...😁
How about donating the wood to local woodturners? they could make things from the wood and sell to raise funds for a stock fence to go around the stump to give it protection.
I had the honour of visiting this site earlier this year. I am dreadfully saddened to see what has happened. I hope the police are able to capture the person or persons responsible and prosecute them to the full extent of the law.
And saw off one of their legs without anaesthetic. Under the current legal system they'll get off with a slap on the wrist for an act of pure barbarism of the worst and most (mindlessly) degenerate kind. What a world we are creating.
I only hope this ruins the life of this utter scum that did it, i hope who did it is made public so it constantly haunts him for the rest of his life...
Society is letting small things slide by without consequences. Theft and destruction of public property shouldn't be tolerated because it escalates things like this.
This is nothing less than criminal damage. I hope that it is seen as such by prosecutors and that the person who did this is not released with a wagging finger and someone saying "who's been a naughty boy? Don't do it again!" This is a huge red flag! Someone who gains pleasure from destroying a life, be it animal, vegetable or mineral, has very serious psychological problems and these should be investigated before he moves on to animals and, worst of all, children. This is how psychopaths begin. This is how narcissists begin; they gain pleasure from harming things that others love. The police have arrested the perpetrator; let's hope that they do not let him go; this is a very serious sign that all is not well with that kid's psyche.
If you have wooden floors in your house you are complicit in the murder of innocent trees. The tree was pretty, but spare a thought for all the nameless trees felled around the world everyday.
@@Mezman999Those trees are mostly from well managed forest lands, at least here in the US. Wood is a fantastic renewable resource, or would you rather their floors be plastic wood, manufactured in a pollution spewing factory?
You can't prevent someone from being a psychopath or having NPD by punishing them. Those are incurable personality disorders, not psychological problems. Depending on the motive, a lack of empathy may be an early warning sign of a personality disorder, but punishment for the kid who did this is pretty irrelevant if that is the issue.
@Roycieboycie; I do spare a thought for all the trees that felled around the world, especially the ones in my own garden that my neighbours forced us to have cut down!😡 I prefer trees to people and was growing a forest around me.
Absolutely gutted at this tragedy. Had always wanted to go there and to take the kids along. Although it will not be the same, it will coppice, and I am sure the parks will protect its off spring to ensure its continued growth for many more years to come. Still feels a truly painful hurt upon the lone purveyor of our life giving gas, stood solo as a reminder of it's kin in other places. I wish the feelings of pain felt and sadness felt around these losses were more acute when the trees that are torn up for the progress of a white elephant rail route are just forgotten about because they are not as much in the public eye. We have lost ireplaceable trees and the habitats they provide for inumerable life forms, to progress an unwarranted vanity project. Wait till the empty platitudes pour forth from westminster, purveying an image of hurt and shock for the public to bathe in, and remember the slaughter of the 108 ancient woodlands removed from the landscape by those who voted for their demise. Maybe vent your sadness on those monsters, when the surface to show "solidarity" with the people.. Let them know how you feel about more than one tree, however iconic it was, it is one tree in the open fields that will regrow form its stump into many more shoots of growth and extend its life longer than if it stood as a single stemmed tree. From death comes rebirth, but maybe it can be a talisman for the halting of the slaughter, when it's being talked about stopping the damn thing anyway. How many more ancient woodlands and trees will be torn up before they actually pull the plug?
The thing is though, I'd much rather have a greatly inferior tree grow back from the stump rather than a new one that will eventually look as good, then it's still the same tree.
What kind of lowlife does this to a beautiful sycamore tree... doing no harm to anybody... flourishing in its little glen...this wasn't done on a whim...this boy has planned this, and acquired a chainsaw and carried it all the way up there...what a sick society we have become...
I'm sad about it and never even heard of The Sycamore Gap before. I'm in the US and understand it was an iconic tree (and location.) Condolences to all who feel the loss. Though senseless, perhaps some future beauty can come from it, some how, some way.
Happened near me at Brimham Rocks in North Yorkshire. An iconic stone structure formed by millions of years of water erosion was toppled by laughing teenagers. Nothing was done by the police
I’ve been very lucky to visit this iconic lovely sycamore 4 times in my life, the first time in 2017. I’m really sad that I will never see this beautiful tree ever again and feel so sad that nobody who has never been will never have the opportunity ever again. This was a very selfish act by a selfish pathetic young adult. I really hope he gets the absolute maximum punishment for this act of vandalism that has destroyed a historic, iconic and beautiful peace of Britain for eternity. His parents must be so proud of him.
It isn't dead though, far from it apparently. It seems that Sycamores are particularly hardy and relatively fast growing, and despite this appalling act of vandalism to the beautiful crown, experts are predicting that it could grow about 6 feet by next spring, a small consolation I know, but it's something 🌳
My thoughts exactly, I went to see the Singing Ringing Tree near Burnley, what a disappointment. Did not sing or ring and was covered in graffiti. Put a large real tree back, It can be done even if it costs £500,000.00. We will all chip in.
As a very temporary solution, why not put a nice plastic tree in the ground nearby so as to give the impression of the tree there... Doesn't need to be as large, maybe half as big would make do...
I hope they lock up the perpetrator and give him a lifetime of community service cleaning up nationals parks. Only then maybe he will realise the seriousness of his actions.
They need to do a country wide search for a large mature Sycamore tree and have it removed, then replanted in the same spot as this tree... 50 foot tall mature trees are bought and delivered to places all the time, so the National Park CEO should start a 'Go Fund Me' page, to pay for the new tree, the removal cost, the transportation cost and the replanting cost. (Don't let that teen vandal win.)
It would be sad to remove a sycamore from somewhere else but there are many being destroyed anyway by builders that could be rescued by raising money from this.
@therealunclevanya And in the pitch dark too. Far too clean a cut for a youngster working single-handed in the dark way out there. And the weight in the felled portion... shame the little brat wasn't pinned underneath it when it fell.
If they release the names of the guys who did this, trust me they will be regretting it. Will get them drinking through a tube the rest of their lives …
The kid should spend some time in a young offenders institute, definitely, alongside community service. 6 months inside and 300hrs community service seems reasonable for a crime of this scale, at his age.
@@Norman-j7m it’s senseless vandalism of a landmark that’s stood for hundreds of years and meant a lot to a lot of people. Actions have consequences. Just be glad it’s not 200 years ago when the teen would’ve had his hand chopped off and branded with a hot iron
This whole thing stinks, overnight felling, professional cut, a 16 year old who is too young to be identified. There are certainly lot of questions that need answering, the most important one obviously being: why would you do this? All I know is that this feels like an attack on our country's soul.
Waited for a stormy windy night to carry the noise of the chainsaw away. He isn't old enough to drive. It's a very professional cut in the dark. To young to name. The nearest car park has security cameras. Something is not as it appears.
@sicks6six almost exactly word to word what I posted on another thread. I have chainsaw tickets, this was not a 16 year old. This reeks of elitist symbolism.
I don,t think this appalling act could have been committed by a teenager, that tree felling needed professional equipment. But whoever committed this act should have an VERY massive fine, a few weeks inside would almost be looked on as a badge of honour,,, hit his pocket where it REALLY hurts, and his/her face published in EVERY paper and magazine. The public really want to know who was sick enough to do this. Everybody who comes into contact with this sick individual needs to know how to keep well away from him,, and that includes employers, and the general publicity he is in business for himself.
Because your family are tenant farmers and after three generations your tenancy is not being rolled down to the next generation (I understand they broke the tenancy agreement but don't know if that is the reason) and after eviction (they were given a lot of extra time) you do this for spite as you had threatened to do.
I think everyone would love to hear any early plans about restoring the area, whether that be replanting of other trees, a memorial or something else. I saw another comment that suggested we use this as a springboard to fundraise for reforesting the area which I love.
A 16 year old has done that on his own? Travelled there with a muckle chainsaw ,marked it up and felled it himself. Get the thumbscrews on the little shit for the rest of them.
Im really disgusted, I wish more trees were protected, they are a link with the past even if they don;t have any media coverage or appear in films...so sad.
Omg 😳 I'm Canadian, and have never visited this magnificent place, but I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of this landmark. I felt a true sadness at the news 😭
This makes me so sad & actually gave me chills when I first realised what had been done to this beautiful tree. It was a place I’ve wanted to visit for a long time and I still plan to. I hope something can be done, either through planting a new sycamore tree or a sculpture, as a memorial to the grace and beauty of this stunning tree and landmark ❤🌳
I am so saddened by this apparent act of pointless vandalism; a couple of years back I hiked that iconic path from Maryport to Newcastle and laid a small handful of my close friends ashes at the base of that tree. I remember standing there in its shadow wondering what it could’ve seen in its time and, for the life of me, I cannot even begin to think why it would be someone’s first idea to just cut it down like that. I think though that the saddest part is that, knowing the broken justice system; where people get less than ten years for murder and are out in less than five, that whoever did this won’t receive any real punishment.
Please understand Hadrian's Wall is NOT on the Scottish Border. Cumberland is close but the majority of Northumberland is a very long walk from Scotland.
Many years ago i walked Hadrians wall and remember when Robin hood prince of thieves came out ,,how i enjoyed boring my family with the tale of seeking refuge from the rain under the tree. And as far as the maggotts responsible for felling the tree , i cannot say what i wish to say because it may cause them worry or concern.....What a nation we have become.
The iconic tree from Shawshank Redemption was also lost, but due to a storm. I can’t imagine why someone would ever think this was a thing worth doing. It’s heartbreaking.
The military had a wonderful way with such people. A loaded rucksack and get up that hill ad infinitem until the sergeant major is satisfied. I think the nation would accede to that!
Plant a new sapling and dedicate it to the late Queen. Nothing can replace the original in the short/medium term but it would put something in place for future generations.
planting a new sapling would include digging out the root system of the old one, which could cause an issue with the wall, and some of the wall could collapse with the ground underneath being disturbed.
My wife is so very sad about this. She visited that part of Hadrian's wall with her father and sister when younger. Their dad took them on a camping holiday to walk the wall and they have such wonderful memories of their time there. It was the only holiday without mum and all rules went out. Apple pie and mars bars for breakfast.
It’s sad that the tree was cut down for no reason. Hopefully the park can find a way to reuse the wood from this special tree so people can remember the tree while also providing additional income for the park. This could be the silver lining for such a tragic event.
Hopefully the tree will sprout again…. I appreciate it will take many years, hundreds for this tree to grow back to its former glory Could a bench/seat be made from the timber and remain on the site. ? This is so sad, I have such fond memories the day I visited the lonely Sycamore tree
Must have been very proficient in his saw handling as the fell direction wedge and cut main cut is not the work of any amateur. A professional would be very proud of that workmanship.
My thoughts were the same, it must’ve been someone who at least owns a chainsaw & is proficient with it, which should narrow the search down somewhat… that’s a big old tree to fell & the cut looks pretty clean…
According to reports, the suspected perpetrator is aged 16. I'm very surprised a 16 year old could achieve that high a standard of work, in the dark, during an act of premeditated vandalism. Can't help thinking there are more details yet to come out.
I wanted to see this one day, I’m sure many people had it on their list of places to visit. What a shame some wee sh*t has ruined it for everyone. I can only imagine what that person is going to contribute to society in the future. 🙄
@@6infinity8 - ultimately, we have to try to forgive him for felling the beautiful sycamore tree, because for me as a Christian woman, I must forgive him or them for their mindless wicked act, because we all fall short of the Glory of God and we're all sinners here and all of us do things rashly, things being sins, that we live to deeply regret. Deeply saddened by this news. I know it won’t be the same and that it will take years to grow, but hopefully something can be done to put a sycamore tree in its place or something?
it is sad to have lost the beautiful shape of the canopy, but Hopefully the existing tree will regrow! if the national parks protect the stump from disturbance for a couple of years then there is every chance the original tree will recover and re-sprout, albeit with a new shape!
Large trees are available (for a price) to be placed in the landscape - there are companies that specialise in this. I'm sure if there was a crowdfunding appeal the cost would be more than covered
Not really the same, though, is it. What made it unique was its provenance, familiarity, its age and its shape. You can't just stick a different tree in and pretend its the same. The only things that I can think of that would work are to either graft the tree back together, if that's even possible, or to use saplings of tree to create an orchard over the area.
There has been enough damage done by a chainsaw and now you want these clowns to do National service and receive training in weapons etc . Are you out of your mind ??
I pity whoever did this that they have such a dead soul that they are unable to feel the beauty of such an iconic landmark and that their being is so cold and callous they would remove that joy from others. What a hideus way to view the world!
It's clear that a significant section of the trunk has been removed from the site, almost certainly after being cut into sections. Could it be that the tree was felled for profit?
I have a dark feeling towards this perpetrator. Also towards those who are responsible for prosecuting him or more likely, those responsible. There will be no justice done! Just another fish & chip wrapper in a few days time!
surely its not beyond our wit to raise some cash to find a donor tree get it transported and put a Sycamore back in in place; yes it will likely be smaller and not the feel the same but give it time and future generations will see what we saw
My thoughts went straight to 'Binsey Poplars', by Gerard Manley Hopkins, and also, 'The Poplar Field', by William Cowper. Do read them. Goes to show how fragile are the things we love, and how we must protect them and never become complacent.
@@fjuvo thats not the better way at all... that would include digging up the roots that are already there, which could also destroy the wall, that would lead to even more destruction.... the only real option is to leave it there
I’m with the writer Robert MacFarlane on this one - This Morning on Radio 4 - “he said the tree was cut down on the eve of the publication of the State of Nature report, which provides a benchmark for the status of the UK’s wildlife. “That report was disastrous - one in six species heading for possible extinction. Nature is under attack in these islands and has been for a long time”. This wasn’t a mindless, narcissistic act - the timing and the clean cut indicate something much more professional and deliberate. Let’s see what the police investigation delivers.

It matters! They must be caught and dealt with or they and others may do more damage. What is wrong with people?
It does matter, there should be retribution. Whoever did this should be made to regret it for the rest of their days.
Was the tree on your side and fell into England or the other way round .
Maybe not but it least it will be the same tree. Better than planting a new one, even if it only grows ten feet tall

Hopefully his photo makes it online somehow, then those impacted by his vandalism might have the opportunity to remind him of the error of his ways, should they accidentally meet him...😁
Probably just a police caution
Im so sorry to see this.Just seeing any old and ancient trees felled is distressing when you know all the years they have seen.
How about donating the wood to local woodturners? they could make things from the wood and sell to raise funds for a stock fence to go around the stump to give it protection.

Can you describe how mineral life works .Go on please we are all ears.
Totally agree with your comment and I'm hoping bloody HS2 gets scrapped soon by our greedy corrupt government!!!
Great comment! Well said
The thing is though, I'd much rather have a greatly inferior tree grow back from the stump rather than a new one that will eventually look as good, then it's still the same tree.

I personally think the tree has been culturally enriched

Absolutely!
