Walt Disney - Pigs Is Pigs - 1954

- The presence of a couple of guinea pigs at the Westcote railroad station create countless offspring as well as a load of paperwork for administrative bureaucrats including by-the-book agent Flannery when their owner won't pay the rate for standard pigs on them. Adapted from Ellis Parker Butler's story, this is one of the oddest shorts on the set, but it is certainly entertaining with its fast-paced, rhyming Irish-jig-like music.

So are we gonna ignore that an Irishman and a Scotsman are gonna argue over the price of two guinea pigs?
No true pig-sman
I always found that funny.
Irishmen and Scots are natural enemies, like Englishmen and Scots, or Welshmen and Scots, or Japanese and Scots, or Scots and other Scots. Lousy Scots! They ruined Scotland!
Can you imagine all the little "coffee beans" Flannery had to sweep up?!
My Great Grandfather Ellis Parker Butler wrote this :'--3
Seriously? well your Great Grandfather was also a great writer hehe, this is one of my favourite short story cartoons I watched many times as a kid...I used to have the Disney Video Cassette.
KingOfGamesss The problem with these shorts, is that they're usually over the heads of kids.
Congratulations!!! You must feel proud of him!! And so we are all of us!
Ken Burns I know what you mean...I remember seeing old cartoons or movies i used to watch as a kid and suddenly realizing parts in the stories that I didn't understand as a child lol....but not all cartoons need to be aimed at 3 year olds...i think I saw this cartoon when I was maybe 10 or 12, i'm 30 now and still love cartoons
KingOfGamesss I saw it in elementary school too, and it made no sense to me. But I don't think it was aimed at adults.
Those guinea pigs were so cute
you could say that one again.
Yup, that's Bill Thompson as Flannery; as he sounds a lot like Jock from "Lady and the Tramp."
And the policeman outside the zoo.
I was wondering, he sounds just like Spike from the Droopy cartoons
I’m sure he was the same vocal actor!
lol, accurate depiction of how fast fresh produce disappears when a guinea pig is present.
Also a good example of how inefficient business and politics can be, and how some people are inflexible and cause bigger problems.
@adasslota It's called "The Irish Washerwoman," and old folk tune.
THANK YOU
Those guinea pigs were cute as well as their offspring.
@doggletts
Actually this short is based on a story by Ellis Parker Butler, published 1905, so neither the title nor the story was concieved by Disney. It's just altered in a Disney manner to make it modern (at least at the time) compaired to the original story.
9:03 don't worry. Elephant are slow breeders.
Could this have been the inspiration for The Trouble With Tribbles?
I personally see the one of the "messages" in this as being "a corporation trying to fix a problem takes so long because it has to hold meetings and send out messages and whatnot that the problem gets worse and worse, when just a bit of independ thinking and common sense could've fixed it all right there and then"
I haven’t seen this in YEARS! Thank you for posting t
Reminds me of the "trouble with tribbles" Star Trek.
The Trouble with Tribbles is based on this
Ah... The animated beauty of bureaucracy!
So what are guinea pigs? Pigs, pets, or tribbles?
#startrek
I've seen this cartoon when I was a kid and we had it on tape. I loved it because I've had guinea pigs since I was 4 years old, so I love this cartoon!
And from this, we get The Trouble With Tribbles.
David Gerrold said as much--that he was partially inspired by Ellis Parker Butler's original short story, and partially by the story of what happened when rabbits were introduced to Australia. (Readings his notes on this was the first I knew that there had BEEN a short story, and that Disney hadn't come up with this little rhyming tale out of thin air.)
Thank you for posting this!!!
Show this to people who think bureaucracy is the answer to everything.
Does anyone, really? :p
bureocracy is the solution to all problems cause it slows stuff down so hard that problems can't be created
Amelia Bee You'd be surprised.
Awe! The guinea pigs are so cute!
It's not Owens (don't go by what you "hear"). It's William Woodson, who was a veteran radio announcer and also narrated "Casey Bats Again," used near identical narration for the famous "Odd Couple" narration (and later, in deeper tones, the likes of "Superfriends")
David Gerrold, who wrote Trouble with Tribbles, says that he was channeling "The Rolling Stones," a story by Robert Heinlein, in which some Martian Flat Cats got a bit out of hand at one point. Nothing to do with this story.
Nominated for the Academy Award for best animated short film in 1954. The winner was the Mr Magoo cartoon, When Magoo Flew.
I miss cartoon show on tv
Omg ive been looking for this for so long!!!!
Me too
if disney would of stuck to this instead of those crappy sitcoms maybe i'd enjoy it
Texas Fallout Radio Station MLP G3.
I remember back when I was a kid in the 90s, Disney would run these old shorts, including this one and the Mickey, Donald, and Goofy shorts. I think the best form of that nostalgia I can get nowadays is the new Mickey Mouse shorts that have Chris Diamontopolous doing an awesome job as Mickey's voice.
It's probably because Bill Thompson, the actor who did the voice of Flannery in this short, also did the voice of the White Rabbit. :^) (And Mr. Smee, and Droopy....)
And he was Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore
I remember this!!.. Man, brings back memories.. :D
this story of guinea pigs, should be inspired by the arrival of hamsters, in everyone's heart. (I have had them too, 2 generations of guinea pigs to be precise, I miss them so much they are really adorable.)
Maybe it's me, but I swear that Scotsman sounds like Scrooge McDuck AKA Alan Young. Did Alan played the Scotsman?
+thabigben1 Bill Thompson, the great radio actor played the Scotsman and the Irishman. He also played the Scots Terrier (Jacques) from "Lady and the Tramp", King Hubert of "Sleeping Beauty", J. Audobon Woodlore, Scrooge McDuck (you called that right), and many other Disney voices. He was a regular on "Fibber McGee & Molly" and also the voice of "Droopy Dog".
lol is that a Scotsman vs an Irishman ?? xD
I think they have that situation in Northern Ireland last I heard :
Ironic that Disney chose to adopt the UPA graphic style.
truly
Yet ironically, lost the Academy Award for best animated short to a UPA cartoon, When Magoo Flew.
Form what I gathered, Walt didn’t care for the artstyle since he thought it looked incredibly cheap, but animator Ward Kimball had convinced him to allow the style since it was the look that contemporary audiences liked. In fact, Kimball pretty much became the go-to art director when it came to the more UPA-stylized cartoons from the studio.
Damned bureaucrats!
"Dry your tears, and save your sneers, have you not some pets for me!"
Irishman vs scott, classic lol
I love this cartoon! Nothing beats Irish jig music with funny lyrics.
Corrected captions:
0:43
In the west coast railway station in the year 1905 the agent there
0:48
was Flannery, the best there was alive
0:51
Flannery ran his station exactly by the rules
0:55
he tried to learn each one by heart just like a kid in school
0:59
There were rules for each occasion that applied from tools to mules there were
1:04
rules about behavior and rules
1:07
dividing rules. {FLANNERY: hmm. 2 guinea pigs. you sure don't look like pigs to me but the
1:22
writin's plain to see, it says you are
1:25
so there's no doubt that pigs is what you’ll be}
1:32
Whenever a customer tried to call Flannery let him fry until he could look
1:38
up the rule to greet the fellow by. {FLANNERY: um yes
1:45
good morning according to section 2 and don't forget to smile}
1:51
{CUSTOMER: morning it was, I’ll have you know I’ve been standing here a while}
1:54
{FLANNERY: I'm supposed to say I'm sorry sir
1:57
it says in rule 3} {CUSTOMER: dry your tears and save your snears have you a box of
2:02
pets for me} {FLANNERY: Indeed I have. Two guinea pigs. See pigs, page 43
2:10
according to the book of rules, your pets are pigs you see} {CUSTOMER: Pigs 48 cents
2:18
pets 44. WHAT! Guinea pigs ain’t pigs, they’re pets and I’m paying 44!}
2:26
{FLANNERY: pigs is pigs at 48 and rules is rules what’s more} {CUSTOMER: Fools is fools you stubborn fool
2:32
will you not take 44} {FLANNERY: The regular rate is 48}
2:33
{CUSTOMER: Very well then [singing] you take the higher rate and I’ll take the lower rate I wont
2:44
pay you more than 44}
2:47
{FLANNERY: Whenever an agent gets in a debate
2:49
and there is an argument over the rate
2:52
the agent must file for a rule and apply and hold on to the package until they reply} {CUSTOMER: hold them then
2:58
and harm them not
3:01
and when you find your wrong deliver them to my address healthy, pale, and strong} Then Flannery sat
3:10
down and sent a telegram away never dreaming he’d regret it until his dying day
3:16
{FLANNERY: Supervisor’s office, pigtown drive, Flannery to Morgan May 6th,1905
3:25
holding two animals in a crate, big dispute regarding rate, is the guinea pig a
3:31
pig or oet. Give ruling on the rate to set. Flannery}. The supervisors office
3:36
was the pride of the company, it received old Flannery’s telegram with
3:40
trained efficiency. {SONG: they examined the wire and immediately dated it then stamped the
3:45
receipts and then communicated through the department that quadruplicate it and
3:50
copies were sent out to all of the staff. Each copy received was filed and relayed and
3:54
two copies of copies then check and rotated then copies of each were then
3:58
validated and contents were noted in ink on a graph. {FLANNERY: a cabbage a day keeps the
4:05
doctor away now
4:07
both of you need a name. I’ll call one of you Pat and
4:12
let me see Mike I’ll name the other} But he quickly changed it to Marie
4:19
when Mike became a mother.
4:23
{FLANNERY: The Saints be praised now ain’t that fine
4:27
I'm a family man meself . [Singing while constructing a new box]
4:35
[typing] Regards last wire of mine. Instead of just 2 guinea pigs
4:46
I now have nine.} {SONG: The legal department was now delegated to study the problem
4:52
now so complicated, then all of the data was accumulated to make the report and
4:57
to tell what they know. The president wanted a full explanation as well as
5:00
an overall clarification for the man that inquired and wanted to know
5:04
if a pig was a pig and to please tell him so.} Now the grandchild of the first two pigs had
5:09
grandsons by the dozens and every time the clock would strike there were plenty brand
5:15
new cousins.
5:18
yeah
5:23
{SONG: The board of directors convened and debated the question of pigs and r
5:29
were they related to pigs or to rabbits as once indicated by evidence found by
5:33
the fact finding staff. } A boy in the office had first advocated, a zoology professor dictated it
5:39
here is the answer
5:41
and here's how he stated it. {PROFESSOR: I reiterate it on the company's behalf, the guinea pig is the
5:48
cavia porcellus while the common pig is the sus of the family suidae. They are
5:55
not pigs. The 44 cent rate applies. {SONG: And copies were sent to the filing clerk
6:06
and then to O’Shaunessy, then 20 more in triplicate were sent on to McGee}
6:10
McGee will make a thousand more for all the clerks to see., for the janitor and
6:15
the auditor and the rest of the company.
6:18
a hundred were sent to the engineers and fireman each got four. The section hands got
6:22
three apiece and the hobos twenty more.
6:26
With monotonous regularity those pigs produce more eggs, while Flannery tried to
6:31
stem the tide by playing them Irish jigs. {SINGING and PLAYING MUSIC}
6:55
regarding the McClure house pigs the
7:03
forty-four cent rate applies signed Morgan. When Flannery got the telegram
7:12
straight down the road he tore to take the news to McClure house, {VOICE AT DOOR: McClure house doesn't live
7:18
here anymore} Then Flannery wired the office {FLANNERY: tell me quick
7:26
what do I do, there is no rule to cover this case
7:29
so tell me what do I do} [various voices shout “not me, see Joe, see John, see the VP, not me]. The a very clever young clerk made a recommendation
7:40
to fix it he sent to the main operation he never did know of the multiplication
7:44
that pigs had now grown to a million and two. Flannery loaded the pigs in crates in boxes, bags
7:51
and sacks. He filled six hundred box cars
7:54
according to the facts. After loading all the pigs but two and looking weak
8:02
and won
8:03
Flannery turned to the pigs and said ”you’ve begat and begot now be gone!”
8:13
{SONG: They unloaded the cars at the main office station then filled up the warehouse with
8:26
in desperation they stored away pigs in the whole operation and the president shouted
8:29
until he was horse.
8:30
Three officials submitted their signed resignations complaining of pigs in the whole
8:36
organization. The president started an investigation of Flannery, pigs and the whole
awful sort
8:49
{FLANNERY: Dear President. Tis not so bad as it seemed to be at once. What if all those million guinea pigs had once been elephants?”}
9:12
From that day forward Flannery swore, {FLANNERY: no more will I be a fool whenever it comes to
9:18
livestock, blast every single rule. If the animals come in singles or if they come in sets.
9:25
If they’re got four feet then
9:27
they'll be classified as pets!}
Alright!!! Thanks for the subtitles!!!
This art style looks more like modern cartoons than what we remember Disney for.
***** You're right, it does like it. The interesting thing about this is that staff, including the director for this short had worked for Disney prior and afterward. UPA was indeed founded by former Disney animaters too boot.
guinea pigs are more closely to mice than rabbits
they are relatives of the capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris ) and the Patagonian mara (Dolichotis patagonum).
Flannery's voice-over actor sounds like Spike The Bulldog from the Tex Avery cartoons!
🤔 😃
Because it’s Bill Thompson, the same voice actor.
This is my favorite RUclips video, it's so funny!
Bahahahah just multiplying and multiplying, this is Australia but with rabbits
@@KingOfGamesss i said but with rabbits
Vintage 1950's Disney! Bring on the Puinea Gigs!
If this story took place in Peru, Bolivia or Ecuador, the solution would be simple: eat the perpetually multiplying little buggers.
this is how the senate works!! lol
Gotta be the best cartoon ever.
It's a joke on how Scotsmen are supposed to be conservative with their money. The old joke is that when a Scotsman drops a penny, it hits him on the back of the head when he goes to pick it up. It's an old stereotype.
I heard that Gary Owens voiced the narrator and this was his first voice acting job.
"You've begat, and begat, now, BEGONE!"
Wow, that process was a phenomenal waste of paper
6:58 is this explosion sound effect been used for Madame Medusa's swamp mobile?
Right.
I remember this as a kid, my twin brother and I loved watching it.
1:50 - May this image haunt your nightmares forever.
What song is played in this cartoon? I mean what title of composition (some classical music or Irish?)
I love 💕😇😘 this little movie 🍿🎥 and poem.
Stop feeing them quadro-triticale!
Hold them then and harm them not,
and when you find you're wrong,
deliver them to my address,
HEALTHY, HAIL, AND STRONG!!!
This is one of my favorites--it's such an adorable cartoon!
good cartoon. Tells much about the weakness of bureaucracy
lol guinea pigs don't multiply that fast
Wow guinea pigs conceive and give birth quickly according to this cartoon
A Scot and Irish man argue about a price that at 4 cents difference. What a cheap Scot
I think 4 cents was a bigger difference at the time.
Reminds me of Tribbles from Star Trek.
separate them from each other and they wont multiply, duh...
Sucks Disney refuse to play these great shorts today!
Of course, but still, cool coincidince
Hey, this has the Mellomen in it! Strange seeing how I couldn't find this under their name, but wikipedia also forgot to add Rooty Toot Toot to Thurl Ravenscroft, so go figure.
Thurl is unmistakable!
the pigs are soo cute!
I have two guinea pigs---both male, luckily!! I love this cartoon, it reminds me of them.
3:16 the male Guinea pig was thinking to the female let’s get it on 😂
i didn't think guinea pigs were so....effectionate
@goodstuffbunny A type that does not use ink, but instead paints the penciled drawings directly.
I guess this video goes to show how complicated things can get in a company over small matters.
too many Guinea Pigs the house is exploded by keeping making guinea pigs
This short is the reason I used to own 12 Guinea pigs
Bruh I wish I had that Irish feller working as manager at my gas station.
SHOWS HOW OUR GOVERNMENT WORKS.
Seriously, did the book on their care not state quite clearly that guinea pigs are rodents and not pigs? HUGE difference! Do your homework, people!
Spider-Verse commentary sent me here
I am very curious to know the context of this.
No, and I think I might have meant to say that if they call the animal a guinea hog, it is a real pig, but if they call it a guinea 'pig' that makes it not a pig but a rodent. Now looking at my comment I think THAT's what I meant by that comment, that a guinea PIG is a rodent, not a pig, but a guinea HOG is an actual pig.
All this fuss over $.08.
When Pat and Marice got gender I knew what's going to happen
For you ruclips.net/video/04YUA7zZv_c/видео.html
Hahaha, this is such an Awesome cartoon!
I actually forgot the name of this cartoon but I first saw it when I was in grade school but as soon as I saw the guunea pigs multiply, It all came rushing back
i own the book for this.
at 4:17 Marie looked very satisfied
Rodney the guinea pig from Dr. Dolittle: "I'll give you a hint. I'm cute, I'm furry, and I make 500 babies a year!!"
OMG I love this cartoon!!! It's been so long since I've seen it! Thank you for posting ^^
No, that was Bill Thompson as Flannery. I would recognize his White Rabbit voice anydangwhere.
After you friend. Besides, I wasn't complaining about it, rather i found it alittle amusing actually.
The cartoon is based on the short story of the same name, which is available from Project Gutenberg. There are a few changes; the most obvious is that the original story is not a poem.
wer kommt noch von Chan??😂
ich XD
ich XD
+Glove paint Ich auch xD
ich XD
+Lucie Broeckmann ich xD
Hey, I know some cool ways where guinea pigs could be actual pigs. The rodents obviously aren't pigs, but there's a breed of real pig called a guinea hog. Of course if they substituted "pig" for "hog" in the breed's name it wouldn't be a pig anymore. It's also an interesting fact that a NEW guinea pig could be a pig, as in New Guinea pig raising is a big part of the culture ;)
Ah, the blunders of the bureaucracy.
Can anyone tell me where I can find music from this cartoon? Or maybe what's the name of song from 6:36?
Aww, I loved this one!!
Wir hatten dem Film auf einer Vidiocassette-.Leider finden wir sie nicht mehr.Schade, dass solche Filme nicht mehr ausgestrahlt werden.
really like this, great fun !
loving the spastic building dance ! ^_^
