If you put a Long land pattern from 1722, next to a New light land pattern from 1811. even the person must unintrested would spot that it´s not the same version. It´s the first and the last version of Brown Bess. I think most would think that it was two diffrent flintlock muskets.
when it comes to rifles. it´s a big diffrence between a rifle that was used i to educate conscripts with for decades and a rifle that was put in a arsenal and almost forgoten. I my father has a gevär m/96 that almost didn´t see daylight the first 90 years of it´s life. so a rifle can survive a long time in a military arsenal. I have seen rifles used to educate conscripts. they didn´t look nice at all. I think a rifle that have been in frontline service. would look even worst.

I started watching "9 hole reviews" off the back of the work you did with Henry. I've pretty much watched all their content now, Henry's a machine (even for someone who's worked with a lot of machines) and very modest about his background.

I was once told by an old sergeant who was IIRC a WW2 or Korean War vet that using an M3 IR sight was about like using a standard 2 D-cell flashlight. I take that to mean that it was reasonably effective out to 20-30 yards.
I read accounts of where they were used by sentries, to give advanced warning and worked out to about 50 yds. They were not accurate sights like you have now, more illumination, much the same as the British and German kit in WW2
@@shawnr771 Yep, there are a lot of people who assume the WW2 "night sights" are like modern ones, giving an image you can shoot accurately with when in reality they are more like an infra red searchlight in use and ability. The British used a series of Equipment called "Tabby" which started prewar They used them though for illumination, night visions devices (monoculars and binoculars for drivers, recce, raiding parties). Signalling (beach parties to subs off shore etc) Marking (safe lanes through minefields, bridge defiles etc) Detecting anyone observing you (you can be detected much further than you can see) But because of the inherent issues with the kit at the time (bulky, heavy, relatively fragile) - they did not fit them to weapons preferring them to be used as stand alone devices. The RAF even used a version on aircraft as a form of IFF to identify allied aircraft on bombing raids in conjunction with the Automatic Gun Laying Turret (Radar controlled, blindfire turret fitted to British Bombers mid to late war) - the gunner would be equipped with a “Tabby F” infra red receiver to spot an infra red lamp on friendly aircraft.

I remember being "interested" in the ZiP 22 for exactly the reasons you mentioned before it actually came on the market, it was super weird and cheap enough that I didn't care if it sucked and became a safe queen. Then before it was released I handled one at SHOT and talked to the guy who designed it, that disabused me of any notion that it was worth bothering. His lack of knowledge of common firearm terminology became apparent while discussing aspects of the design, and his arrogance became evident also in that ANY criticism of various "features" was quite haughtily dismissed. I was amazed that handling it was even more awkward than I had imagined, I had assumed that I was missing something while looking at photos and that mockups had been done and found some sort of weird ergonomic Zen that made it comfortable. Nope. Clunky, uncomfortable, didn't feel totally secure in my hand, and the charging method was even more insane than it looked which was surprising because it looked really bad. I do have to give him some credit though for coming up with the idea of mounting it underneath the handguard (which would require registering it as an SBR if you're a civilian) of a rifle for use in "special operations". I give him credit because coming up with a way to make a ZiP even less useful and more hazardous to operate took a special kind of evil "genius" given how bad it was already.
Ian, I would really LOVE to see you do a visit or even an episode on large importers like Century, and how their procurement and acquisition process works. It's something I've always wondered and would love to see how all of that works.
Hi, Ian. I enjoy your presentations very much. They are interesting, informative, and entertaining. Talking about old guns could be very boring. You have developed a natural, well-paced presentation with good eye contact. Sometimes I realize that you are looking at something and I imagine what it could be. I would probably use a photo of one of my friends, who I knew was interested and knowledgable about the topic and just talk to the photo. Whatever you do, it works very well. As to speaking French ... I've had some experience - trying - to learn some foreign languages and it's kind of hard here in the States where you don't have that many people who can speak anything but English. I - have no facility with Languages what so ever ... I've taken German, Russian and Chinese and ... oddly ... remember more of my High School German than I do the others. I can say hello in Chinese ... and Good Bye in Russian - and that's about it. When I was taking Chinese though (5 semesters) - the guys who really learned the language - lived there for a while. Also - I dated a German Girl - whose father had sent her to Paris for a year to go to college there and learn French and then had her live with an Aunt in the US for a year, taking business classes and - learning English. These were languages she already knew how to speak - but she really learned them by living abroad. BUT - my - Brother's Business is Teaching Conversational English in Japan. They all take English in school - but - the ones that really want a chance to practice it - sign up for such as my brothers school and spend a few hours a week speaking English to fellow students there. If you can't live in France for a while - you might see if there was some kind of a Conversational French Business or Club ... here - where you could meet with people (post corona of course) or perhaps speak to them through Skype or such. Besides visiting Quebec, the only other thing I can think of is things like French Web Sites that might give you a chance to read and maybe visit any forums they might have and make textual exchanges. The only French Web Site I know of is for a Pop Star though: www.priscillange.net/ Perhaps there are some French Web Sites on French Fire Arms? I was playing a game once and let the game randomly assign me to a "guild" - and was put in a Spanish Language Group. Most people speak English but I did pick up a few words in Spanish. I even looked at taking an online Spanish class but ... eh ... I wasn't into it enough for that. I guess the basic idea is - anything and everything you can do to make spending some time in the language part of your life ... . Sorry not to be of more help. I'm just over flowing with ignorance here. .
there a few french yt channels dealing with firearms history and technology. one of them uses cut aways and animations, but no range essays, or the actual gun on a table. it's good if you have an interest in smithing, the cut away and moving skeleton bits are well done. can't think of the name off hand. if it pops up, I'll make sure to post the channel here. bonne soiree.

I knew this one Chinese Lady at work - who had actually been born on the mainland before the revolution and whose family had to flee to Taiwan. She had married an American Sailor when she was young and then moved to The States with him. When she was older and had daughters that were in High School - she went back to Taiwan to visit her sisters and they told her that she talked like a High School kid herself - because that's about how old she was when she had left - and thus - that was the way she spoke Chinese. Then there was this Vietnamese Girl I also worked with - who came to the US with her family after Vietnam fell. Her English was really bad though even though she had gone to College here. I told her - "I know what you did. When it was lunch time - you went to the cafeteria and sat with your Vietnamese friends - and spoke Vietnamese - didn't you?" and she was like ... yes ... that was exactly what she had done. Conversely that German Girl I dated told me that when she was in Paris - the other Germans she knew there would invite her to sit with them during lunch but her response was, "No. I came here to learn French. I can speak German when I go home." So - it is really hard and something you have to make a real priority in your life if you're going to get any good at it. My other brother married a girl whose parents were from Mexico - so - she spoke fluent Spanish. They made a decision that they wanted their children to grow up bi-lingual and did make some effort to see that happened - but - I don't know what actually resulted from that. My Nephew and my Niece grew up in L.A. and while they've made trips to Mexico - never lived there. My Brother in Japan with the English as a Second Language Business - married a Japanese Girl and their son - was raised bi-lingually. He came over here for a year or two and went to college for a while but he's back in Japan now. His English is very good as is his Japanese. Then - I went on Travel to Puerto Rico for work once and the guys I worked with there spoke English without a trace of a Spanish Accent but spoke Spanish to each other. So - people can and do do it - but it takes a real commitment. One of the things you have to do - is get to where you are not thinking of what you want to say in English and then translating it in your head into French - you have to learn to THINK in French. The people who are truly bi-lingual - can do that but - it isn't easy to get there and requires a deep immersion in the language to achieve that. .
For the piston-operated revolver, the first thing that comes to mind is a top-break with the piston going through the center of the cylinder, to avoid pressure loss from the cylinder gap. Also, a lower hammer would allow the piston to have more mechanical advantage, so a top break Chiappa Rhino or Mateba Unica since the lower bore axis from firing out of the bottom cylinder means a lower hammer. But, this is just random morning thoughts.
For me there is a much simpler solution for a gas operated revolver, which would be a direct impingement revolver (in this case it would be appropriate to use the design of firing from the lower chamber, such as the chiappa rhino and make a hole in the frame, passing above the cylinder to carry the gases to the hammer to cock it, that way you don't need to have a break-action revolver or other complex system)

I had talked to John Keene about the Japanese training machine gun you eventually reviewed. In the recent RIA auction I held my breath and must say I was glad you had already done an episode on the Japanese "Knee" Mortars. When you showed the training machine gun I knew the extra interest would take it beyond my budget, and it did. Now that you will have a Nambu, and I won the Mortar, I can speculate on the fun we could have exploring the world of a Japanese WWII squad of 2. I have had a muzzleloading black powder cannon for some time, and listened closely to what you had to say about the BP breech loading cannons. The "Knee" mortar is the low end of the adventure into higher pressures and charges of smokeless powders significantly larger than even my hungry 416 Rigby devours. Fun, entertaining, and enlightening all with a dash of historical insight, guns are magical that way, as are your explorations of them. In any event I hope to be at Big Sandy in 2021, perhaps with nose bleed tickets, but yet, with a ticket. I must say I was disappointed you picked the 22 ZIP instead of the .410 revolvers, now a 28 gauge revolver on the other hand......................
A smoothbore gun could have precision and range with single subcaliber darts while still being suitable for shotshells, as well as for light grenades(possibly with shaped charges). So maybe it could fill the role of the full-power rifle cartridge as well as the shotgun's. Being designed for higher pressures should increase its power-to-caliber ratio, maybe allowing for narrower cartridges.
Depends; does it take one input, and one voltage, or several taps off the battery for different voltages. There are radios from back then that are utter pigs to sort out, most of them military radios, and the same problem arises :(
That and I believe there was an inverter involved. It would be a pretty simple task to provide the requisite voltages and proper current....if they are known.
Then you have old fragile "electronics" to contend with. For our Mk 4C mine detectors we went from the huge original valves and 150v battery in a backpack used during WW2 to a solid state box you wore on your belt with a 9v battery that had much longer life - no more replacing blown valves - the actual IR emitter and receiver components of the early equipment were first generation as well, still learning how to make them, the materials were often not as durable - it would probably be easier to build a more modern unit in a copy housing.
Every CZ pistol I have will drop the slide if a full mag is inserted... briskly. It's so consistent across models that I for one am convinced it's by design. The best part is they appear to do this via geometry instead of additional parts (i.e. mechanical complexity).
I think you're right Ian that FW-by-mail has reduced the variety of content somewhat (although I have still greatly enjoyed it) I don't agree that it has reduced the quality. In fact, quite the reverse; having a consistent space for your filming that is well lit, has good sound and stay consistent between videos is actually an improvement in terms of production values. I think one of the issues before was that because you are filming on location (often abroad) you have limited gear and have to improvise filming spaces. This can, on occasion, result in sound or lighting that is less than ideal (a recent example being the Cody Firearms museum interviews with Jonathan where the sound was very echoey and difficult to listen to). So yeah, I think the take away is the FW-by-Mail is something you should definitely look into continuing although there will always be a lot of content you can't get without travelling to museums and such the improved production values for the stuff you can film at home is excellent.

If you slam a mag into an AR hard enough while the bolt is back, it can re chamber it automatically. I’ve only gotten it to do that twice but I haven’t tried since I figured it’s not good for it.
The French in general don't like speaking French. Just like the English don't like learning other languages. We are both too proud and ignorant. As for high end watches and firearms it's the emotion it creates when you wear or use it or even look at them. It's an appreciation of the art, design, history and the craftsmanship. For some it's just the status symbol.

during my time in the german french brigade I made the experience, that quite a lot of french people are able to speak german or english, but simply don't want to. a significant number of those I spoke to refused to speak german or english to me until I made properly clear that my frenchskills are not good enough for a proper conversation.
I know it can be seen as arrogance, not wanting to speak English or German with you. But more often it will be fear to be unable to speak it properly. Fear of being ridiculous with a poor accent. That's why after stating your French is very poor they won't be afraid anymore...
Wrt the gas operated revolver: Wouldn't it be less lossy to have a gas tube run through the fixed top strap rather than have a cylinder gap in the tube?
@@Matt_The_Hugenot So the cylinder rod itself is the piston or contains it inside. Interesting idea, it would be possible or at least easier to use a break open design with that as well.
I don't think y'all realize why the cylinder gap is the issue. The cylinder gap is integral into the design of a revolver and it bleeds gas and decreases pressure pushing the bullet forward. Putting a gas piston anywhere after the cylinder gap means less than ideal pressures for cycling. Putting a gas piston before the cylinder gap is just a downright bad idea because those are the chambers (they bear the highest pressure) and there are 6 of them.
@@boymahina123 You could try using a higher pressure cartridge and big gas tap, or try decreasing the gap as much as possible. Maybe not seal it completely like the few revolvers that can because the point is to spin the cylinder with this energy, though I can imagine a real fancy design which gets a perfect seal, stores the energy in a spring below the barrel on firing, then after the seal is opened the spring is released and spins the cylinder + cocks hammer. At this point you're just making this contraption for fun rather than for practicality.
I reckon it's within the realm of possibility to achieve an OICW-like capability by dropping a smart-scope and a fusing package onto a standard M4/M320 combo.
I think the biggest problem with the OICW is actually how heavy the optics are. Sure, a semi auto carbine is about 4lbs minimum. Then you need to make that grenade launcher as light as possible. I'd believe about 6lbs. OK, that's now a 10lb combination gun. Plus optics. Oops, that's another 3-4lbs...

If you had a swing-open revolver, it seems to me you could put a gas port in the barrel, then a gas tube down the top strap, and thus to the hammer. The better question is, why?
I had thought of this idea before, but for me it works better with a revolver that fires from the lower chamber, like a chiappa rhino. Answering the why question, I would say it would be the same reason most people prefer DA/SA pistols over DAO pistols.

It's pretty nice especially when Karl has been getting almost aggressively political over at InRange (and certainly aggressive in his interaction with people who dislike the political content). Eh, some things are inherently political. Guns, at least in the sense of being used for the purpose of self defense, can also be political. IE, defense against tyranny, which is *definitely* political.

To be fair Ian, I think that if the OICW was made using todays technology, it would actually be a lot more practical than it initially was. I say that because computer technology has become so much smaller, faster, and more advanced since the late 90’s/early 2000’s - that if they were to make the same type of weapon today (with the exact same features - e.g. the scope, laser range finder, programable grade rounds, etc), it would actually be a lot less bulky, and around the same weight as the M16 (if not slightly heavier). Granted, they would probably still have to cut down a lot of weight on the grenade launcher portion of the weapon - maybe even reduce the magazine size from 5, to 3 grenades per magazine.
There's still a constant trade-off between size, weight, cost, reliability. Sure, miniaturization has come a long way, but it doesn't really change the fundamental dynamics, especially in the context of primarily kinetic weapons.
Well, OICW may be back when actual power armor suits will enter the service. Or when the Skynet will rebel and be searching a weapon for its terminator army

A Beretta Px4 will drop the slide automatically if you insert a full magazine forcefully. I think it's done through a deliberately light slide release.

I’ll tell you more about gas sealing cartridges. there was nagant revolvers with two synchronised drums. one usual drum and another at the end of the muzzle which catching plugs that pushing bullet and keep gasses sealed. so called Mitins brothers device which was made in 1929. later they came up with usual suppressor. there also was Gurevich revolver made in 1944 which using specific sealed cartridges with liquid inside which pushing bullet forward. after end of the war this project was dropped.
The question about the gas-operated self-cocking revolver was fun. Someone could make a fearsomely over-complicated and unreliable gun by combining that idea with the Nagant style of gas sealing cylinder.

@@anthonyflanders1347 Dude, in France you start learning English at 10. I understand the fact that old people or 40 yo adults don't speak english fluently or not even a single word. But teenagers/ Young adults have english basic knowledges and you can't tell the same for Us or English.
I think if the military starts use of exoskeletons or complete human argumentation (or whatever post standard infantry concept you fancy) allow for more than human strength. something like the oicw could potentially make sense especially if these suits (or robo mutants)were armored. this armor would force shaped charges to be even important than in modern mechanized warfare

I'd love to see video of KP Vz. 38... a real pre WWII machine pistol. It looks like SMG, but has extreme low ROF (200-250 RPM). It had to be weapon for bunker door defence/LMG replacement for really small bunkers. The gun won military contract over czech ZK-383 SMG. Unfortunatelly only about 20 were made before Munich conference.

If you put a Long land pattern from 1722, next to a New light land pattern from 1811. even the person must unintrested would spot that it´s not the same version. when it comes to rifles. it´s a big diffrence between a rifle that was used i to educate conscripts with for decades and a rifle that was put in a arsenal and almost forgoten. I my father has a gevär m/96 that almost didn´t see daylight the first 90 years of it´s life. so a rifle can survive a long time in a military arsenal. I have seen rifles used to educate conscripts. they didn´t look nice at all. I think a rifle that have been in frontline service. would look even worst.

I was once told by an old sergeant who was IIRC a WW2 or Korean War vet that using an M3 IR sight was about like using a standard 2 D-cell flashlight. I take that to mean that it was reasonably effective out to 20-30 yards.
I read accounts of where they were used by sentries, to give advanced warning and worked out to about 50 yds. They were not accurate sights like you have now, more illumination, much the same as the British and German kit in WW2

The British used a series of Equipment called "Tabby" which started prewar
They used them though for illumination, night visions devices (monoculars and binoculars for drivers, recce, raiding parties).
Signalling (beach parties to subs off shore etc)
Marking (safe lanes through minefields, bridge defiles etc)
Detecting anyone observing you (you can be detected much further than you can see)
But because of the inherent issues with the kit at the time (bulky, heavy, relatively fragile) - they did not fit them to weapons preferring them to be used as stand alone devices.
The RAF even used a version on aircraft as a form of IFF to identify allied aircraft on bombing raids in conjunction with the Automatic Gun Laying Turret (Radar controlled, blindfire turret fitted to British Bombers mid to late war) - the gunner would be equipped with a “Tabby F” infra red receiver to spot an infra red lamp on friendly aircraft.

The problem is less the power supply than the other electronics. Vacuum tubes burn out all the time.
I remember being "interested" in the ZiP 22 for exactly the reasons you mentioned before it actually came on the market, it was super weird and cheap enough that I didn't care if it sucked and became a safe queen.
Then before it was released I handled one at SHOT and talked to the guy who designed it, that disabused me of any notion that it was worth bothering. His lack of knowledge of common firearm terminology became apparent while discussing aspects of the design, and his arrogance became evident also in that ANY criticism of various "features" was quite haughtily dismissed. I was amazed that handling it was even more awkward than I had imagined, I had assumed that I was missing something while looking at photos and that mockups had been done and found some sort of weird ergonomic Zen that made it comfortable. Nope. Clunky, uncomfortable, didn't feel totally secure in my hand, and the charging method was even more insane than it looked which was surprising because it looked really bad.
I do have to give him some credit though for coming up with the idea of mounting it underneath the handguard (which would require registering it as an SBR if you're a civilian) of a rifle for use in "special operations". I give him credit because coming up with a way to make a ZiP even less useful and more hazardous to operate took a special kind of evil "genius" given how bad it was already.

As to speaking French ... I've had some experience - trying - to learn some foreign languages and it's kind of hard here in the States where you don't have that many people who can speak anything but English.
I - have no facility with Languages what so ever ... I've taken German, Russian and Chinese and ... oddly ... remember more of my High School German than I do the others. I can say hello in Chinese ... and Good Bye in Russian - and that's about it.
When I was taking Chinese though (5 semesters) - the guys who really learned the language - lived there for a while. Also - I dated a German Girl - whose father had sent her to Paris for a year to go to college there and learn French and then had her live with an Aunt in the US for a year, taking business classes and - learning English. These were languages she already knew how to speak - but she really learned them by living abroad.
BUT - my - Brother's Business is Teaching Conversational English in Japan. They all take English in school - but - the ones that really want a chance to practice it - sign up for such as my brothers school and spend a few hours a week speaking English to fellow students there.
If you can't live in France for a while - you might see if there was some kind of a Conversational French Business or Club ... here - where you could meet with people (post corona of course) or perhaps speak to them through Skype or such. Besides visiting Quebec, the only other thing I can think of is things like French Web Sites that might give you a chance to read and maybe visit any forums they might have and make textual exchanges. The only French Web Site I know of is for a Pop Star though:

I was playing a game once and let the game randomly assign me to a "guild" - and was put in a Spanish Language Group. Most people speak English but I did pick up a few words in Spanish. I even looked at taking an online Spanish class but ... eh ... I wasn't into it enough for that.
I guess the basic idea is - anything and everything you can do to make spending some time in the language part of your life ... .

I knew this one Chinese Lady at work - who had actually been born on the mainland before the revolution and whose family had to flee to Taiwan. She had married an American Sailor when she was young and then moved to The States with him. When she was older and had daughters that were in High School - she went back to Taiwan to visit her sisters and they told her that she talked like a High School kid herself - because that's about how old she was when she had left - and thus - that was the way she spoke Chinese.
Then there was this Vietnamese Girl I also worked with - who came to the US with her family after Vietnam fell. Her English was really bad though even though she had gone to College here. I told her - "I know what you did. When it was lunch time - you went to the cafeteria and sat with your Vietnamese friends - and spoke Vietnamese - didn't you?" and she was like ... yes ... that was exactly what she had done. Conversely that German Girl I dated told me that when she was in Paris - the other Germans she knew there would invite her to sit with them during lunch but her response was, "No. I came here to learn French. I can speak German when I go home."
So - it is really hard and something you have to make a real priority in your life if you're going to get any good at it.
My other brother married a girl whose parents were from Mexico - so - she spoke fluent Spanish. They made a decision that they wanted their children to grow up bi-lingual and did make some effort to see that happened - but - I don't know what actually resulted from that. My Nephew and my Niece grew up in L.A. and while they've made trips to Mexico - never lived there.
My Brother in Japan with the English as a Second Language Business - married a Japanese Girl and their son - was raised bi-lingually. He came over here for a year or two and went to college for a while but he's back in Japan now. His English is very good as is his Japanese.
Then - I went on Travel to Puerto Rico for work once and the guys I worked with there spoke English without a trace of a Spanish Accent but spoke Spanish to each other.
So - people can and do do it - but it takes a real commitment. One of the things you have to do - is get to where you are not thinking of what you want to say in English and then translating it in your head into French - you have to learn to THINK in French. The people who are truly bi-lingual - can do that but - it isn't easy to get there and requires a deep immersion in the language to achieve that.

For the piston-operated revolver, the first thing that comes to mind is a top-break with the piston going through the center of the cylinder, to avoid pressure loss from the cylinder gap. Also, a lower hammer would allow the piston to have more mechanical advantage, so a top break Chiappa Rhino or Mateba Unica since the lower bore axis from firing out of the bottom cylinder means a lower hammer. But, this is just random morning thoughts.
For me there is a much simpler solution for a gas operated revolver, which would be a direct impingement revolver (in this case it would be appropriate to use the design of firing from the lower chamber, such as the chiappa rhino and make a hole in the frame, passing above the cylinder to carry the gases to the hammer to cock it, that way you don't need to have a break-action revolver or other complex system)
Tungsten ammo has made small bore shotguns more deadly at longer ranges. A high pressure rimless 410 could be interesting.

I had talked to John Keene about the Japanese training machine gun you eventually reviewed. In the recent RIA auction I held my breath and must say I was glad you had already done an episode on the Japanese "Knee" Mortars. When you showed the training machine gun I knew the extra interest would take it beyond my budget, and it did. Now that you will have a Nambu, and I won the Mortar, I can speculate on the fun we could have exploring the world of a Japanese WWII squad of 2. I have had a muzzleloading black powder cannon for some time, and listened closely to what you had to say about the BP breech loading cannons. The "Knee" mortar is the low end of the adventure into higher pressures and charges of smokeless powders significantly larger than even my hungry 416 Rigby devours. Fun, entertaining, and enlightening all with a dash of historical insight, guns are magical that way, as are your explorations of them. In any event I hope to be at Big Sandy in 2021, perhaps with nose bleed tickets, but yet, with a ticket. I must say I was disappointed you picked the 22 ZIP instead of the .410 revolvers, now a 28 gauge revolver on the other hand......................

A smoothbore gun could have precision and range with single subcaliber darts while still being suitable for shotshells, as well as for light grenades(possibly with shaped charges). So maybe it could fill the role of the full-power rifle cartridge as well as the shotgun's. Being designed for higher pressures should increase its power-to-caliber ratio, maybe allowing for narrower cartridges.
Except that the large bore will mean a much heavier barrel once you're talking rifle pressures.

On the battery trouble note: I mean it'd be a hassle, but surely it could be achieved with an adjustable DC power supply hooked to the input?
Depends; does it take one input, and one voltage, or several taps off the battery for different voltages. There are radios from back then that are utter pigs to sort out, most of them military radios, and the same problem arises :(
That and I believe there was an inverter involved. It would be a pretty simple task to provide the requisite voltages and proper current....if they are known.
Then you have old fragile "electronics" to contend with. For our Mk 4C mine detectors we went from the huge original valves and 150v battery in a backpack used during WW2 to a solid state box you wore on your belt with a 9v battery that had much longer life - no more replacing blown valves - the actual IR emitter and receiver components of the early equipment were first generation as well, still learning how to make them, the materials were often not as durable - it would probably be easier to build a more modern unit in a copy housing.

Every CZ pistol I have will drop the slide if a full mag is inserted... briskly. It's so consistent across models that I for one am convinced it's by design. The best part is they appear to do this via geometry instead of additional parts (i.e. mechanical complexity).
I think you're right Ian that FW-by-mail has reduced the variety of content somewhat (although I have still greatly enjoyed it) I don't agree that it has reduced the quality. In fact, quite the reverse; having a consistent space for your filming that is well lit, has good sound and stay consistent between videos is actually an improvement in terms of production values. I think one of the issues before was that because you are filming on location (often abroad) you have limited gear and have to improvise filming spaces. This can, on occasion, result in sound or lighting that is less than ideal (a recent example being the Cody Firearms museum interviews with Jonathan where the sound was very echoey and difficult to listen to).
So yeah, I think the take away is the FW-by-Mail is something you should definitely look into continuing although there will always be a lot of content you can't get without travelling to museums and such the improved production values for the stuff you can film at home is excellent.
I could watch one of these Q&As at least once a week and these are perfectly suited to working from home.

If you slam a mag into an AR hard enough while the bolt is back, it can re chamber it automatically. I’ve only gotten it to do that twice but I haven’t tried since I figured it’s not good for it.

The French in general don't like speaking French. Just like the English don't like learning other languages. We are both too proud and ignorant. As for high end watches and firearms it's the emotion it creates when you wear or use it or even look at them. It's an appreciation of the art, design, history and the craftsmanship. during my time in the german french brigade I made the experience, that quite a lot of french people are able to speak german or english, but simply don't want to.
a significant number of those I spoke to refused to speak german or english to me until I made properly clear that my frenchskills are not good enough for a proper conversation.
I know it can be seen as arrogance, not wanting to speak English or German with you. But more often it will be fear to be unable to speak it properly. Fear of being ridiculous with a poor accent. That's why after stating your French is very poor they won't be afraid anymore...

@@Matt_The_Hugenot So the cylinder rod itself is the piston or contains it inside. Interesting idea, it would be possible or at least easier to use a break open design with that as well.
I don't think y'all realize why the cylinder gap is the issue.
The cylinder gap is integral into the design of a revolver and it bleeds gas and decreases pressure pushing the bullet forward. Putting a gas piston anywhere after the cylinder gap means less than ideal pressures for cycling.
Putting a gas piston before the cylinder gap is just a downright bad idea because those are the chambers (they bear the highest pressure) and there are 6 of them.
@@boymahina123 You could try using a higher pressure cartridge and big gas tap, or try decreasing the gap as much as possible. Maybe not seal it completely like the few revolvers that can because the point is to spin the cylinder with this energy, though I can imagine a real fancy design which gets a perfect seal, stores the energy in a spring below the barrel on firing, then after the seal is opened the spring is released and spins the cylinder + cocks hammer. At this point you're just making this contraption for fun rather than for practicality.
IIRC the Grand Power pistols are designed to automatically drop the slide when you insert a loaded magazine as well.
I reckon it's within the realm of possibility to achieve an OICW-like capability by dropping a smart-scope and a fusing package onto a standard M4/M320 combo.
I think the biggest problem with the OICW is actually how heavy the optics are.
Sure, a semi auto carbine is about 4lbs minimum. Then you need to make that grenade launcher as light as possible. I'd believe about 6lbs. OK, that's now a 10lb combination gun. Plus optics. Oops, that's another 3-4lbs...
The ergonomics for such a thing would be horrific.

If you had a swing-open revolver, it seems to me you could put a gas port in the barrel, then a gas tube down the top strap, and thus to the hammer.
The better question is, why?

Answering the why question, I would say it would be the same reason most people prefer DA/SA pistols over DAO pistols.

Your channel is a niche that might not work on Joe Rogan, not unless he's really into your content; the conversation will at some-point shift to issues and aspects you don't cover (gun control, politics etc)

clamum Agreed. And although I don’t mind Rogan, Ian is cut from a different cloth, in the best of ways. At the very least he(publicly) is apolitical(I would never deny someone the right to their opinion, in those ubiquitous words...I might disagree but would fight to the yadayadayada) but I have no faith for someone(anyone) to not draw him into sensationalism that is relevant or not. Now. If he could get him to agree about a discussion over calibers, effectiveness, etc it might be the tits. But revert back to what I said about my faith in anyone(not just Joe Rogan) attempting to goad him on, and it would be aggravating to see somebody pervert his knowledge for viewership.
Expressing political opinions, even elsewhere, might just upset the powers at RUclips and result in a channel removal/ban. Yes, RUclips _IS_ run by people with that sort of attitude. Appearing with others who are verboten persons by RUclips can also be a problem.
@@clamum The big thing is that Ian takes a no politics approach to his content to appeal to the most people possible. It's pretty nice especially when Karl has been getting almost aggressively political over at InRange (and certainly aggressive in his interaction with people who dislike the political content). I 100% prefer Ian's no politics, just guns approach.
Ian and Karl on Rogan together as Inrange would be a far more likely arrangement. That's more matching into what all of them do.

Ad blocker denies Ian any opportunity of getting ad revenue. But it was.. disheartening to get more than 5 commercials over 3 minutes long, in just 25 minutes of viewing. Those commercials went away as soon as i signed in.

Eh, some things are inherently political. Guns, at least in the sense of being used for the purpose of self defense, can also be political. IE, defense against tyranny, which is *definitely* political.

Hi Ian Best of luck with the French lessons. I learnt French at secondary modern school in the mid 70s I'm still conversant and capable. The problem is guys we all speak with an accent what tends to throw them. an American accent speaking French. Will be tricky.

To be fair Ian, I think that if the OICW was made using todays technology, it would actually be a lot more practical than it initially was.
I say that because computer technology has become so much smaller, faster, and more advanced since the late 90’s/early 2000’s - that if they were to make the same type of weapon today (with the exact same features - e.g. the scope, laser range finder, programable grade rounds, etc), it would actually be a lot less bulky, and around the same weight as the M16 (if not slightly heavier).
Granted, they would probably still have to cut down a lot of weight on the grenade launcher portion of the weapon - maybe even reduce the magazine size from 5, to 3 grenades per magazine.
There's still a constant trade-off between size, weight, cost, reliability. Sure, miniaturization has come a long way, but it doesn't really change the fundamental dynamics, especially in the context of primarily kinetic weapons.

A Beretta Px4 will drop the slide automatically if you insert a full magazine forcefully. I think it's done through a deliberately light slide release.

I’ll tell you more about gas sealing cartridges. there was nagant revolvers with two synchronised drums. one usual drum and another at the end of the muzzle which catching plugs that pushing bullet and keep gasses sealed. so called Mitins brothers device which was made in 1929. later they came up with usual suppressor. there also was Gurevich revolver made in 1944 which using specific sealed cartridges with liquid inside which pushing bullet forward. after end of the war this project was dropped.

The question about the gas-operated self-cocking revolver was fun. Someone could make a fearsomely over-complicated and unreliable gun by combining that idea with the Nagant style of gas sealing cylinder.
For me there is a much simpler solution for a gas operated revolver, which would be a direct impingement revolver (in this case it would be appropriate to use the design of firing from the lower chamber, such as the chiappa rhino and make a hole in the frame, passing above the cylinder to carry the gases to the hammer to cock it, that way you don't need to have a gas piston revolver or other complex system)

I think if the military starts use of exoskeletons or complete human argumentation (or whatever post standard infantry concept you fancy) allow for more than human strength. something like the oicw could potentially make sense especially if these suits (or robo mutants)were armored. this armor would force shaped charges to be even important than in modern mechanized warfare

I'd love to see video of KP Vz. 38... a real pre WWII machine pistol. It looks like SMG, but has extreme low ROF (200-250 RPM). It had to be weapon for bunker door defence/LMG replacement for really small bunkers. The gun won military contract over czech ZK-383 SMG.
