The whole album is a masterpiece, not one clunker...wait until you get to the title track and "Locomotive Breath "...
a good description of this great album....spot on.
She knows the title track, she’s heard it she just couldn’t remember the name. And that’s funny because the name of the album or rather the name of the song she was looking for was the name of the album she was looking at
2nd day in a row with Prog classics. Jethro Tull are distinctive greats of the genre. Ian Anderson's cutting lyrics, flute and always a showman. Martin Barre is one of the most under-rated guitarists from this era, in part due to Anderson hogging the limelight (in a nice way)> This album was seminal for future bands to come. Enjoyed this
Awesome stuff!
I have seen Tull 13 times over 4 decades and the concert was always special. Ian Anderson vocals, intro guitar, flute and He also writes and arranges everything. One of the most special front man of rock history. Special. Decades of muse to enjoy here. To Cry You a Song, Teacher, Bouree, Hymn 43 and a ton of others as well.
Amazing!
Me too, definitely one of the very best concert performances I've ever seen. Ian's songs, his flute playing, singing and his acoustic guitar playing is very underrated as well. And as an entertainer and storyteller...forget about it.
My God, Hymn 43, and Wind Up taught 13 year old me that it wasn't uncool to think deep thoughts. ❤️ Singer and writer Ian Anderson is self-taught on the flute. The guy on the cover is Aqualung, poor old sod that he is. My God is about liberating God from organized religion
Yeahhhhh
Ian Anderson's acoustic work is underrated.
this band has all the talent you'll ever need! Ian Anderson is incredible. the ultimate showman you must see live videos!!!!
The guy on the cover is The Aqualung. Ian Anderson's wife wrote the song Aqualung describing a character like the cover. Ian Anderson is the Lead Singer, Songwriter, Acoustic Guitar and Flute player for this lineup of JT. Many think he is Jethro Tull and has always hated the name for that reason. The name(The real Jethro Tull was an 18th century agronomist)was given them by their manager,Terry Ellis. Story goes they weren't very good at first so that when the manager would call the club early in the week ask how the band was, the club manager would say don't send that band back, so Terry would tell them okay but I've got this great group and change their name. Long story short, the night they were finally discovered they were Jethro Tull
The album was received as an anti god/christian album and was burned in the bible belt of America. If you guys listen to the last song called Wind Up, his message is crystal clear and I'd say his take on a higher power would've been agreed to by many of America's founders
You simply must see Tull live. Ian Anderson is more than just a talented musician. He is a performer and calls himself a "minstrel". Musically the whole band is top shelf.
Another one of my first albums. I would sit in my room and listen while I stared at the cover art and learned the lyrics. I Know every nuance of every song. Wow I was young. Memories.
It was this, Yes- Close to the Edge, The Allman Brothers- Live at Fillmore, Neil Young’s- Harvest, Paul McCartneys 1st solo and Genesis Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.
"You'll be praying 'till next Thursday, to all the "Gods" that you can count"
best line ever.
Absolutely one of my fave J Tull selections! Thanks guys. For my money the concept LP "Thick As A Brick" is one of Ian Anderson's most brilliant expressions.
Ian Anderson flute solo Tampa Bay 1976 is spectacular. Ten minutes of greatness...
Jethro Tull is a name taken from a 18th century British agriculturist. Ian Anderson is the center of the band as composer, lead singer, acoustic guitarist, and flutist. They have a number of great songs, but if you're feeling VERY adventurous (and I have my doubts after Yes) check out "Thick as a Brick" - a single 40 minute song that covered two sides of an LP. As others have said, listening to Jethro Tull is one thing. Seeing Ian Anderson perform live is a whole other dimension of entertainment!
Brick was my entryway, although I found much of Brick acoustic and melodic...not always 'soft', and it does rock in places, but leaning much more folk than prog, despite it's length...
Awesome! Shoutout to Ian!
Why not try one of the live versions of "Thick as a Brick"? They are much shorter (12-13 minutes), and you get to see Ian performing. If you really like the song you can always do the full studio version.
Check out Cross eyed Mary! FYI , the main singer is the one playing the flute as well.
the cover is Aqualung, a vagabond from Ian Anderson's town while growing up.
Good that you enjoyed "My God"---The Figure on the album cover is the character "Aqualung"--the album and title song, the lyrics will describe the character plainly. Many quality tunes on this album and the entire Tull anthology!!
Ian Anderson, the mad genius flute master, dropped this jam only 2 years after teaching his self the flute.
Wow!
Ian Anderson is FIRE! Jethro Tull was outstanding in person!! Such a rockin show!🔥
when this was originally recorded ,Ian had played the flute for around 3 years
Wow!
Wow, more prog. Love the Jethro Tull. Electric/medieval/folk/rock is the vibe. Nourishes the soul
I was kind of surprised, (had to check) you have really overlooked Jethro Tull so far! I look forward to the future 😀
😃
Yes stay tuned
That would be Aqualung my friend on the
cover waiting for Cross Eyed Mary. Ian Anderson on flute and acoustic guitar
The song Aqualung is, IMO, the first rock song about a homeless man described by someone trying to understand homelessness for the sympathetic to the plight of a homeless man ("Do you still remember, December's icy freeze?"), as well as how others see him as disgusting ("snot is running down his nose"). Some thread of humanity comes through on the song Aqualung. That is what the cover is showing. Thanks for the reaction.
This song gives you everything Tull has to offer. Rock, Baroque, Chant, fusion , Classical Flute with power chords and solos
My fave Tull tune..... and he has many.
Ian Anderson, the creative force behind Tull - writer, lead vocal, acoustic guitar and flute. The album cover really goes with the song Aqualung, about a homeless man. It was insured by a photograph of a homeless man that was taken by Andeson's wife.
This is one of my favorite albums of all time. It had a big influence on my formative ideas of humanity and religion.
Co writer. Many songs were musically co written. Most artists acknowledge this in album credits.
Jethro tull love them been listening to them on and off since 70s, never tire of them, profound man!! 🇬🇧✌️🧐
Lots of Zappa fans love Tull, that's almost a sine qua non. Jethro Tull is one of those British prog bands from the early seventies like Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Gentle Giant, …. They conbined rock with English folk music and Ian's stories were really captivating. Some songs had that medieval aroma. And Ian Anderson with flute in hand and one leg lifted on the other upper leg while blowing his flute became an icon of a medieval minstrel. When you watch live videos from that era, he had such charisma and impact on stage, acting like a crazed court jester.
Arf
Hell yeah! Shoutout to Ian!
Saw them do this live way back when in the 70's. I don't remember a lot of shows that I went to back then but I remember this one clearly as Tull put on quite the show...
Nice! Thanks for sharing Joe!
This is the old, the good and the real Rock'n'Roll, my brother!
You know it!
Bought this Aqualung album as a sophomore in high school in 1971, and has stood the test of time as one of my top ten albums! Ian Anderson is certainly a musical genius! Aqualung on front cover, so gotta hear Crosseyed Mary which is another great song, as are all of them!
Love your reactions . Especially cause you guys are musicians. You should check this songs live performance when the band did it at the Isle of Wight festival. One of the best live performances of anything I've ever seen
Thanks for watching Tim!
You should check out some of their live performances on RUclips. Much of the time band leader/vocalist/flute player Ian Anderson would stand on one leg as he played, and would do a lot more vocalizing through the flute (something inspired by jazz multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk). Something funny to watch is the first reaction to a live solo of his by Finnish classical flautist Heline on her "Heline Reacts" channel. It's the oldest video on that channel.
Awesome! Thanks!
Yeah, he damaged his body playing the flute like he does.
He's self-taught, and it wasn't until his daughter took flute lessons that she told him what he was doing wrong all that time.
They had to stop touring in the mid-80's because he'd harshed his throat out so bad.
And standing on one leg, something he just naturally did while playing, led to him developing deep-vein thrombosis. Talk about commitment to rock & roll!
Jethro Tull live the best !!!!!
Tull with Ian Anderson are pure genius!
Ian Anderson on vocals and flute
Jump in the deep end. You have to do Locomotive Breath Live
That guitar on this tour was insane
more Tull please.
Funny you should mention Black Sabbath Tony Iommi at one point played guitar with Jethro Tull in their very early days but did not record any music with them.
After Tony Iommi, the lead guitarist for Jethro Tull was Martin Barre who is outstanding and fits Tull's style perfectly.
@@stpnwlf9 Mick Abrahams was the lead guitarist on the first album "This Was" Martin Barre took over on the second album "Stand Up" and remained for many years after.
That’s awesome!
I just saw a Jethro Tull reaction cruise by and stopped in for some one of a kind killer flute treatment. Love the Tull. The guy on the cover is Aqua Lung. Another awesome song if you haven't already done it.
We’ve heard Aqua Lung ☺️ and think it’s Ian!
Please check out our other Tull reactions if you haven’t-we’re doing Velvet Green this or next week too-and thanks for watching Erik!

Just listen to how Martin Barre tears up the sound with that guitar!
Good choice. ..Thanks again. Just start from the beginning of Tull..This was .. Jethro Tull is a terrific band..Named after the seed drill guy from way back
Or, for those who like to do these things the hard way - try youtube playlist?list=PL788ku0w42h2IRMDon56G-_8vnVY-cklq
Beamed to you straight from 1420 AD. Move up to 1500 with "Songs from the Wood" - a serious uplift from the last century, now with rocking tunes and even less instrumentals - yet somehow rocks harder. In UK had to put up with c. 400 years of this stuff :( Minstrals, chorals, Hah!
Haha thanks!
You need to see a live performance, Anderson is insane, lol
I gave 'em a link, above: ruclips.net/video/eBP4eQOVC8I/видео.html
@@fredkrissman6527 nice one. Anderson gives the songs an extra dimension when live, doesn't he.
I had the good fortune of seeing both the Aqualung and Passion Play tours,@@paulfenwick8767, and the latter included a complete performance of ThickAsABrick. Yes, 2 full concept lps in one concert!
@@fredkrissman6527, got to admit to being a little jealous of you on that one. Possibly the only band i liked from that era that i never got to see live. Probably did about 300 gigs in the 70's but somehow missed the great Tull.
Ditto,@@paulfenwick8767. Hendrix was my very first concert, but I was still quite young in the 60s, so never saw the Doors or Janis. Great regrets on missing them. However, like you, in the 70s I saw everyone I loved, from Airplane to Zepp (ha! A-Z, and both aviation related!!!).
In the song,
“Locomotive Breath, his wife leaves with his best friend the kids are gone, his life is over. He becomes “Aqualung”then listen to “Cross-Eyed Mary”, with “My God”. 1971 I was 13, Jethro Tull, the Aqualung tour, what is my first rock concert. Uptown concerts ever since.
Welcome to the wonderous world of Ian Anderson (lead singer/songwriter/composer/flutist/acoustic guitar/ and what not..) and his Jethro Tull.
I was 14 years old when I first heard this song, and we had just started experimenting with alternative tobaccos.... (rhymes with cash).... and I was blown away by this strange atmosphere his songs created in my brain..
Nice reaction from you too!
Thanks so much Frands!
Amazing group, everything is unique when it comes to this music.
Whoever thought the flute could be a rock instrument. If you're so inclined check out this song performed live at the Isle of Wight 1970, one of the most incredible live performances ever. The flute solo will blow your mind.
It's not only a Rock instrument. It's a (heavy)Metal instrument😉
Yeah!
When they won the first Heavy Metal award (Grammy?), they didn't even show up, assuming they wouldn't win. Next day, their producer (or someone, I forget) took out a full-page ad saying "The flute is a heavy, metal instrument"
The following year, when Metallica won, they said "We'd like to thank Jethro Tull for not releasing an album this year" lol!
Brillliiiaant song from a legendary group.
Must react to Thick As A Brick and A Passion Play.
And excellent operatic staged played classic folk rock fusion ensemble masterpiece epic gothic of it's good works chants. I've love every movements of it.
Love this album. JT was a master. Beautiful.
Thanks for watching Lynn!
The crossover of modern rock & medieval minstrels
I saw a comment on how Clive Bunker and Martin Barre's entry into the song is like the police kicking down your door. I can not think of a better analogy.
There’s humor in his flute player at times. You should watch this song live at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970. You can see how he can get crazy on his flute solos.
We just reacted to a
JT live at that concert. We were blown away!
At school 1970, 16 years old, borrowed Aqualung, listened to it, hated it. Two weeks later, bought it and have loved it, and Tull ever since ❤️
Nice
Tull over the years has been blues, prog, prog folk, rock....you name it. And always amazing. For something different try Roots to Branches, where they show some middle eastern influence. And always listen for the interplay of Ian Anderson on the flute and Martin Barre on lead guitar.
Enjoy Jethro Tull... Top 5 albums of all time.... Not a bad cut on it.
Great music, band and rabbit hole.
So many great tunes and p incredible albums!
This piece is a perfect example of the musical genius of Ian Anderson. He plays the acoustic at the beginning, the flute and those amazing vocals. I believe that is Ian on the cover. Sifa, you are probably talking about Aqualung as the song you hear on classic rock who is the character depicted on the cover.✌❤🤘
The guy on the cover is a self portrait of the painter himself.
@@samuelecallegari6117Thanks. I wasn't sure.
If you look at pics if the band you'll realize the artist patterned the cover figure after Ian Anderson, which he really didn't like. There's not a bad tune on this album, by the way. My God is the jumping off point, or in.
P.S. No lifting required for this one.🤣🤣
Haha lifting only recommended ;)
At that time Anderson used to perform in an old torn overcoat and a cod piece. And standing on one leg. %)
I commented on a few of your Zappa reactions, and one artist that to me is in the highest levels with Frank is Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull. Ian really admired Frank, had similar views of drug culture and the hippy era - which made him really uncomfortable - with a tremendously hungry artistic mind. Incredibly prolific, a lot of intense social commentary, humor, dynamism while also being commercially successful. Jethro Tull to me are greatly under appreciated. Thank you for the reaction.
"The bloody Church of England requests your earthly presence at the vicarage for tea".
"Anti-establishment" - you darn right!!!
Excellent reaction!!
Thank you!
The guy made flute playing cool. What more needs be said?
I've been listening to Jethro Tull for something like 45 years, and this one is most certainly one of my all time favorites of songs I know, not just by this band or Ian Anderson alone.
Me hacéis revivir estas maravillas. My God es una obra maestra...como Thick as a Brick y muchas otras de los primeros setenta de jethro Tull. Gracias!
You make me relive these wonders. My God is a masterpiece ... like Thick as a Brick and many others from the early seventies by jethro Tull. Thanks!
Gracias Sebastian! nos alegra que hayas disfrutado!
Preach Ian!
Clive Bunker was, along with Ringo, were my inspiration in my musical career. Total feel drumming. No meaningless rudimentary gymnastics that too many think is good drumming.
You are right my friend Ian is certainly a guy of is words
Ian Anderson, the leader and main songwriter of Jethro Tull is also the lead singer, acoustic guitarist and flute player for the band. All the musicians are exceptional, but he's a friggin' genius! By the way, at the time this record came out, Anderson pretty much looked and dressed like the Aqualung character on the cover. So he's got that going for him too.
Lol interesting
Quanto amo questo gruppo.
Take the time, make the time, listen to the entire album start to finish without breaks. Do not do it from online downloads as the short breaks between "songs" will ruin it. Trust me, you will have blown minds.
Top notch!
Yes nice reaction
you should listen to them live and watching Anderson play the flute it’s amazing
You should watch some live performances of JT. Amazing live.
Thanks!
More Jethro Tull reactions would be totally welcome 😍
Haha we’ll see what happens!
The man on the cover is the subject of the song Aqualung.
You need to see them live! I would suggest Thick as a Brick live at Madison Square Garden 1978…an approximately 10 minute condensation of their full album length single song.
Ian Anderson wasn't anti-higher power; he was anti Church of England. His lyrics were deep for the early 70s and the parent album, 'Aqualung' celebrated its FIFTY year anniversary this year!! Holy cow.
Now it's time to watch the Isle of Wight Festival performance of "My God" with its extended flute solo. Ian Anderson is a self-taught flutist who also plays acoustic guitar.
Thanks for the info Justine!
Wait til you see live footage of them from the 70's.
And now you know what heavy flute sounds like.
Yeahhhhh
Yeahhhhh
Ian Anderson sings and plays flute. He is also doing the acoustic guitar in the beginning. Ian plays that part in live shows, so I'm assuming Ian is playing the acoustic guitar on the studio version. Ian is not playing the electric guitar part however. Ian Anderson started out as a guitar player but decided he wasn't good enough to crack the big time and picked up the flute....self taught. If you listen to Ian over the years, his proficiency on the flute improves to the point where he is now a concert level flautist...again...self taught.
Ian lost his voice a few years back so he doesn't sing much if at all but he plays the flute in different settings and with different musicians, including orchestras.
Jethro Tull was highly loved and had many fans back in the day. But I think they were even better than they were given credit for back then. They have a rich and deep musical catalog.
You really need the lyrics to fully enjoy this song.
I am shocked that you don't know Jethro Tull. Tull and NYC are like America and apple pie. It's their second home. I saw them in Shea stadium in Tullavision
Let me start by saying I'm a huge Tull fan. I saw them at Madison Square Garden (MSG). Unfortunately, it was during the tour for "A" (1980 or 81). Was not familiar with the album ahead of time and was not particularly impressed with those new songs. They did play tunes from earlier albums and they were really good. The other thing that really put a damper on that show was the drunk teenagers directly behind us who threw up during the concert. The smell was horrible and there was nothing we could do about it. Not a great concert for me. Thankfully, the next time I saw them, no one vomited. It was a much better experience.
@@neonpark1874 I saw them a few times back in the late 70s. The show a Shea stadium was with
Rory Gallagher, Robin Trower, Jethro Tull (original members)
Some Songs Exist without any Band! They Exist as their own power makes that possible…as they are alive and this one should have been playing at the crucifixion itself too! Out of the thin living AIR! In other words this is a Eternal Song! Always been alive in the universe..bursting out when needed!
🤯 wow Vic, that’s deep!
Yes! Ian Anderson was anti-establishment. The power of his statements was over-whelming. That is what I Love about him. And his use of a flute in a rock and roll band was unbelievable.
You should react to the whole album! A masterpiece for sure. Watch them live. Ian Anderson (band leader and flute player) is amazing on stage. Seen them three times...
I love you guys. You are choosing the best from my youth abd I THANK YOU!
Thanks so much! We hold polls on our Patreon to decide which albums we should react to next. Definitely check it out if you want to get involved in our content decisions!
The original lyric for the graven image bit was "And the graven-image Catholic/With his plastic crucifix/He's got him fixed." A bit more specific and blatant!
This song is just a masterpiece. Everything is so tasty but oh My God...the flute
My God indeed!
Fans and the press kept insisting "Aqualung" was a concept album - Ian Anderson said "I'll give you a concept album" so their follow-up was a spoof of a concept album aptly titled "Thick as a Brick" - it came to be considered one of the best of the genre and a shortened version made it onto their live setlist for quite some time.
Try "baker Street muse" from jethro tull 15mn with cool prog
Thanks!
Cottage-core before Cottage-core was a thing. Ian's flute style is totally unique, stemming from the fact that he was self-taught. He breaths and vocalizes over the flute. Heline, a classical flutist, has some fun reactions to Tull.
great
The dude in on the cover is Aqualung!
You guys should do some early live stuff. Ian's Live antics are incredible
I'm surprised you haven't dipped into Tull. I thought you had.
Some other amazing songs from this album, "Crosseyed Mary", "Locomotive Breath", "Wind Up" and "Wondering Aloud". Hell, the whole
album is sensational. "Aqualung" has no flute but shows Ian"s enormous sense of empathy. He was really a powerful voice for the
voiceless.
Thanks!
Heh, after watching your review, you need to see the live version from Isle of Wight. The first 7 Tull albums are fantastic, and they have a lot of great stuff after that, but it gets a lot folkier and Anderson's voice starts to lose it's punch.
Enjoyed watching your reaction to the piece. Try watching Cross Eyed Mary from the same album. I look forward to watching.
Thanks! If you want us to react to a specific song, definitely check us out on patreon!
