The rise of social media and streaming with the introduction of Disney+ lessened the popularity of tween media. Don't get me wrong, tween media is still being made, but most of it is on streaming. Another factor is the rise of adult content that's easily accessible to kids with every child having a phone.

    • @jackreiter7291
      @jackreiter7291 Год назад +21

Good point. I’m pretty sure kids are fully aware of what Squid Game is when it came out just because of all the memes and discussion. That’s certainly not meant for kids, yet they all watched it anyway.
It’s just the evolution of when we tried to sneakily watch Adult Swim behind our parents’ backs because it was on a usually kid appropriate channel.

I find the intersection of Christianity and capitalism so fascinating and weird at the same time. The way this multi million dollar corporation made *teens* spout purity culture propaganda (which has incredibly harmful consequences to this day) it's strange as well. PS: I loved the video. One of the reasons why, tween/teen medias are hard to find nowadays because most teenagers now seem to be "adultified". They look and even act mature for their age. Even teen shows nowadays gotta include drugs and s3x in it lmao *side-eyes Euphoria*

Maybe if the media today portrayed the s3x and drug5 as “gee this is awkward and I’m nervous and scared and probably doing it wrong” like ACTUAL TEENS then I could understand that stuff even being included

I also think it comes down to money. Reflecting on my tween experience , I only watched these shows between 10-12. This is a very small market compared to toddler, kid, teen and adult content. Yes there are a bunch of teens but the age out so quickly that it’s not lucrative to develop new characters and shows for each new batch. ❤ your work!! Stay amazing😊 from the Bronx, with love.

What concerned me about Miley’s cover on Vanity Fair was (from what I saw because how it was shot) that she looked sad or scared. The behind the scenes photos doesn’t show that, but the cover was concerning and was worried she didn’t want to do it.
I was more sad for her than thinking she was promiscuous and a bad role model. My mom said this as well. I love how my mom can separate things and allows me to like what I like. Another example was Jaime Lynn Spears. She didn’t make me stop watching Zoey 101 because the actress was pregnant at the time. She helped me see that stuff happens, but at least she stayed and took care of her kid.
People need to judge actions more than appearances and acknowledge that people make mistakes and what is important is how they come back from them.

Correction: while Brenda is “not a singer” (her words), she’s not lacking in talent. She contributed vocals to the collective Disney Circle of Stars version “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes.” Almost all the big stars of that era (2005) were there, from the ones who are known for singing, like Raven, Ashley Tisdale, and Aly Michalka, along with others who aren’t necessarily known for singing, but do have decent vocal talent, like the Sprouses, Kyla Pratt, and Ricky/Raviv Ullmann, among others. They also had a lineup in 2003 (singing Circle of Life) which featured some of the same stars (Christy Carlson Romano was featured on this one), and a revival in 2014 (singing Do You Want to Build a Snowman)

I still have a soft spot for some of the Disney Channel teeny bopper shows/movies- Hannah Montana, High School Musical, Austin & Ally (literally one of my all time favorite shows as well as my comfort show) Lemonade Mouth, Teen Beach Movie, and even some of the songs from Descendants (I’m not personally a fan of the Descendants movies but I can’t argue with the songs being good), and Camp Rock still has good songs but the movie aged atrociously 😂😂😂😂

I agree with everything you said. I think kids today know of it and they have the option to watch this era but it’ll never be the same sadly. I made my little cousin watch Hannah Montana and she loved it she’s just 12 so it was before her time but Disney + let’s kids at least have access to that kind of media however the phase TWEEN all together has phased out. From clothing to media to lifestyle. Tweens wear the same Shein clothes that 20 year olds wear basically. They watch The Summer I Turned Pretty even tho it’s more of a late teen show. Their Disney channel stars are now TikTokers. It’s different because the way we consume media has vastly changed. They don’t need to wait for 8pm to watch He Could Be The One Hannah Montana Special. They don’t need to buy Tiger Beat magazine to find out more about their favorite artist they can just search interviews on TikTok.
I think it does have its downside though, tweens should preserve their youth and naïvity the internet is a crazy place and there are some themes that shouldn’t be exposed to them so soon imo. They shouldn’t be asking for idk Patrick Ta makeup and getting acrylic nails at 12.
I think Olivia Rodrigo was the last big Disney star and she’s broken away from that image so well that some people don’t even know she was on Disney (same thing with Jenna Ortega). SOUR even came out while she was technically still on Disney and the show even doing the next season - where she cusses and talks about more “adult” themes. HSMTMTS was a great show it doesn’t have anything to do with HSM surprisingly however i don’t think it’ll ever reach iconic status cause kids can watch anything now it’s not like they are limited to what’s on cable. What is even the popular “it” Disney show at the moment? Do they even do DCOMS anymore? I was too old for Descendants and even that seemed more childish than HSM.
Growing up during this era there is no way i can even begin to explain the drama, plot lines, crossovers, music etc of this era on and off Disney. I lowkey feel bad for kids now. The Hannah Montana note you read at the beginning almost made me cry lol. It was just such a huge part of my childhood esp Miley and the Jonas Brothers Selena etc. The Jonas Brothers music was before it’s time and I used to watch their random videos on RUclips too omg that unlocked a memory 😭 I really miss that era. They came out recently saying that JONAS the show was a mistake and they shouldn’t have done it. I remember not being interested in the show that much even though I loved them.

Excellent video essay, Cheyenne. As for me, I was conflicted with Disney Channel around the early to mid-2000s. I did enjoy Lizzie McGuire, and I believed that Hilary Duff had sufficient charm and lovability to make her shine exceedingly well. I even liked Even Stevens because of Christy Carlson Romano's and Shia LaBeouf's superb sibling chemistry as Ren and Louis, respectively. To this day, I still love Kim Possible and The Proud Family because those were two of the best cartoons that the Disney Channel ever produced, especially when Christy Carlson Romano and Kyla Pratt pulled off beautiful performances as Kim and Penny in the respective shows. Furthermore, Cheetah Girls 1 still holds up so beautifully to this day, and I would find myself rewatching it, thanks to Raven-Symoné's, Adrienne Bailon's, Sabrina Bryan's, and Kiely Williams's superb vocal chemistry.
Things got more contentious by the time I was 12 years old and in the sixth grade in 2004 because I was already getting into anime a lot more, and I was starting to perceive a lot of the Disney Channel shows, especially That's So Raven and Phil of the Future, as not for me. I remembered thinking to myself that seeing a lot of my girl classmates/colleagues carrying around Disneymania CDs and acting like a lot of the catty characters from the Disney and Nickelodeon shows was akin to, in my mind, watching the zombie apocalypse. This was egregious in a "friendship" that I had with one girl who used to throw me bitch faces, roll her eyes at me when I did something out of line, and she acted freaking catty. I thought to myself that Disneymania was responsible for turning a lot of my girl classmates into catty, manipulative, bitchy zombies. However, looking back at the ex-bitch who used to be super catty and just plain horrible by talking shit about me to a couple of my other girl classmates, I came to the conclusion, as an adult, that she probably liked me but had way too many stringent expectations. We're cool on social media these days, but during those times even after I graduated from sixth grade and she was approaching fifth grade, I just could not stand her skinny, catty, bitch face-making, eye-rolling guts as if she were a Herodias or Salome in training. I think it was just a reminder that the interests I had in anime, opera, video games such as Tekken and Soul Calibur, and adult cartoons did not gel with a lot of my girl colleagues in middle school. Furthermore, I am glad that I did not end up in a relationship with her back then when I was young, and I almost did not want anything to do with her because of how she became so catty and was so tempted to hurl her skinny ass to the next galaxy if I had the chance.
In terms of the Disney Channel stars, I always tried to like them as people first, not for their characters. I love Raven-Symoné as a singer, and she was pleasant as a child actress, but I always found her portrayal of Raven Baxter to be annoying, obnoxious, and draining especially in the later seasons. I always believe that Brenda Song is a brilliant woman with a lot to give, but I cannot stand her as London Tipton in terms of her brand of air-headedness and vapidness. Anneliese van der Pol is a talent that is truly made for Broadway and the stage as a whole, but there were occasions when I despised Chelsea Daniels and her tendency to be idiotically annoying. Even when looking back at the Disney Channel So-Hot Summer commercials, I almost wanted to spit so much venom at them because I saw them as the purveyors of turning a lot of girl classmates into catty, bitchy, ruthless manipulators from Hell and see those characters in the So-Hot Summer Commercials cry like the bitches that they were when I unleash the cooler anime characters to kick their butts. Sometimes I also find myself mocking the High School Musical and Hannah Montana crossover promos when Zac Efron, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens, Jason Earles, Mitchel Musso, Emily Osment, and Miley Cyrus were in. Despite the venom that I had against those commercials, promos, and some characters that annoyed me, I at least still liked the Express Yourself segments because these were the commercials that showed the Disney Channel stars of the early to mid-2000s who they were, what were they defined by, and what they liked, and not just them playing characters.
Sure, I got a lot out of my chest, but I wanted to say my piece on the experience I had with the Disney Channel, especially during the mid-2000s, because it contextualized my changing tastes and some of the relationships that fizzled badly during my youth.

Not Disney, but I’ll call bullshit on anyone saying the songs from victorious aren’t “real music”. I’m in my twenties and listened to them recently, and they’re STILL bangers.
I mean hell some of them actually gave young girls an outlet to express frustrations over adult experiences they were having for the first time but were nonetheless considered “too young” to talk about, like suddenly getting unwanted attention from men

There were definitely changes in trends over the years but still had a pretty distinct through line of that Disney brand. And yeah there was a lot of blonde Christian country being pushed at Disney in the early to mid 2000s, which somehow I was never fully cognizant of. Still love Aly & AJ though! Thank you for giving a well developed, nuanced and heart felt analysis. I'm in education and I see how the tween stage is dying off. So many of my students are on inappropriate apps, due to little guidelines on content, and their innocence is fading quickly. Kids really are growing up so fast, in a Brave New World Way. The tween media area will be one I always look back at with fondness and nostalgia.

I always really liked that Ashley Tisdale played Maddie in Sweet Life and Sharpey in HSM. It helped me conceptualize that actors can take on roles that are completely different from their actual personalities.
It helps kids begin to untangle the character from the actor, and see them as separate people.
In my opinion, Typecasting in children’s media is a disservice to both actors and children viewers

I think the decision to film HSM in Utah wasn't all that much to do with religion. Lots of smaller budget productions get filmed here because it's within a day's drive of LA but the property values are (well, at least they were) cheaper so there's less overhead for filming. Also acting and musical theatre are really popular in Utah so there's lots of local talent to use as extras. The Sandlot was also filmed in Utah, as well as Andi Mack, and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

But I'm not sure that I agree with your point that tweens can't or shouldn't be expected to sing or talk about deep topics. I think kids are deeper than we usually give them credit for, and I worry that in criticizing the trend of wholesale dismissal fluffy media for kids, we're forgetting the actual extent of what kids are capable of understanding. Just wanted to add that perspective.

1:17:02 I honestly wish there was more of this video - kids/teen media going through adultification because of the rise of social media and how networks like Disney tried to combat it - but then networks like hbo and the CW just raaaaan with it
And now we have a culture that’s less understanding of how tweens & tween mature and mess up but almost a weird standard - I can’t tell you how many people have said Euphoria is both not relatable and should’ve been done with college kids. Now we have an environment where kids don’t feel they can be kids 🤔

@@CheyenneLin YES!!! I love the way she did that big scene with her brother when she realizes that he still has that curse and she is really stressing out and we see her open up to him about why she teases him and that part of it was because of her own insecurities and being made to feel like she couldn't live up to him.
Alex grew up so well by the end of the show. I think the reason why she is my personal favorite was because I'm a middle child like her and always felt like I couldn't academically live up to my sibling despite the fact that I didn't need to make superior grades in my academics to be smart and intelligent. Her growing up and learning to do things on her own was one of the best crowning touches to her arc ever! I still relate to her. Especially, in the later seasons when she grows up and becomes more of an adult. Learning to adult is hard, but it can ultimately make you feel proud in the end because it can feel like a major accomplishment to you. The scene where she makes spaghetti is the most realistic I've ever seen lol

Hannah Montana was around the time I started phasing out of Disney, and it was largely because I could not stand that show specifically. I don’t know how to explain what I disliked about the show though, something just always felt off to me, I could enjoy the show here and there but it just always gave me a bad feeling when I watched it. As the show continued, anytime I watched it I just found myself wondering what the actors were going through and how they actually felt being on the show, and this was before any of their struggles/complaints started becoming public. Everyone else was obsessed with it and I never found people that shared my feelings, so I kept my thoughts to myself because I didn’t want to sound like I was just finding faults with something they loved.
And then all of the shows that came after, just didn’t hit for me. I know a lot of people love shows that came after/during Hannah Montana, but they all started giving me a weird cringy vibe even if some parts were enjoyable.
I worked as a nanny so even though I wasn’t watching Disney shows for myself, I was still regularly up to date because of the wide range of kid ages I worked with.
I guess all that was me wondering if I’m the only one that has been getting bad vibes from Disney since the debut of Hannah Montana? Disney was full of issues before that, but they seemed to really just tumble downhill in the way the treat their actors and supporting roles and the types of shows they put out after that.

Brenda Song's singing ability might have played some role in why Disney never gave her a pop singing career or uplifted her acting career as much as some of the other Disney Channel stars; but it definitely wasn't the main reason why. [Selena Gomez's music career is may be thriving compared to Miley's and Demi's, but it is not because of her singing ability. Selena Gomez isn't as musically talented as Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato; but her reputation isn't as "tainted" as Miley's and is considered more conventionally attractive than Demi.] The main reason why Disney didn't care about Brenda Song as much as some of the other Disney Channel stars was because she is not white (nor was she multiracial like Vanessa Hudgens, Zendaya, Haley Kiyoko, & Olivia Rodrigo) and isn't a Christian and is part of a racial minority that already doesn't have a lot of people in the arts, music, & entertainment industries in the USA; hence why she usually gets supporting roles and rarely gets main leading roles. Because she is a gal of color that is neither part-white nor white-passing nor Christian - Brenda Song is mixed but she's not multiracial (she's pan-Asian; of Thai and Hmong descent in her case) - she will never be viewed as the "girl next door" type or the "all-American girl" type in white people's eyes. [The irony is that Brenda Song stayed relatively clean (even after she stopped being a Disney channel star) - but that is not a shock to anyone that is Asian and grew up with Asian parents - while almost of the devout Christian white Disney channel tween stars didn't upheld to the squeaky clean image they claim to be both during and after their time on Disney.]

It has no business trying to ride on the coattails of HIMYM, the new show throws out all of the things that made its predecessor work and only gets by with really dumb callbacks to the original. And the way they’ve brought back characters from the original has been terrible as well.
If they had made the show its own it wouldn’t come off so terribly, its just a generic slice of life sitcom that can’t keep its story straight, which would be fine if they weren’t trying to wrap it up as a “clever” gender twist on something that was actually cohesive.
