Bhai Satpal Ji, you explained everything so well about the Gurus concept about how we are all equal. It makes a lot more sense the way you explain it in simple words. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with us. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
Thank you for speaking about women and equality. It is very powerful to see and hear men standing up and speaking on this topic all these many, many years later. It was a relevant topic when Guru Nanak first spoke about it, it was a relevant topic while all the Guru's walked the earth, and it continues to be an important topic. Guru Gobind Singh Ji left us with our living Guru in the Guru Granth Sahib and it is very powerful to hear reminders of what is written about equality for all people and for women and equality. Sikhi teachings continue to be ahead of the times even now! Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.
Excellent work. Wisdom of Sikhi is hidden from world in times when people around world have lost hope from every religion. Thanks for giving your viewers a glimpse of spiritual treasure which Sikhism holds... Also please can you touch on subject of caste system which is still being widely practiced among Sikhs despite the fact that Sikhism rejected it 500 years ago.
Wow, what a well researched and well delivered talk. Everything is explained so clearly and logically. My mind is blown with the facts from this talk. Thank you for sharing this.
I wish we put this into practice.... - women barred from kirtan at darbar sahib - women barred from palki sahib seva (or even touching it) due to impurity from menstruation at darbar sahib - very few places women are allowed seva as Panj Pyaras even though Sikh Rehet Maryada explicitly says women are allowed - many instances of women barred from sitting on Guru Jis tabiya due to menstruation - SRM under marriage says wife has to 'serve' husband but not the other way around - Taksali maryada goes further and says a wife is to see husband as God over her while he is to see her as a faithful 'follower' - Male leads female follows during lavans - First five prashad always given to only males - Very few female granthis, ragis, or women serving on Gurdwara management Just some examples

I have a few questions with regards to this particular talk as well as a few other points that I would like to raise. I hope someone is able to answer these since as a feminist, it is very important for me to get these answers especially when it comes to Sikhism - Why didn't we have a female Guru? - Why is kindness seen as an essentially feminine trait? Can't men be kind ? I think the quality is equally innate in all the genders or rather it is not gender specific at all. The patriarchal culture conditions everyone into believing that men have to be aggressive whereas women have to be kind and giving, feeding into the age old seterotypes. This is also one of the things that promotes the culture of toxic masculinity that we see around us. The explanation here creates a further doubt which brings me to the next point - As mentioned by Bhai Satpal Singh Ji the idea that everyone has to have feminine qualities and be 'wife like' to surrender to the one 'husband', aren't we again perpetuating the notion that the husband leads while the wife follows? - I believe ( please correct me if I am wrong) that in the Bani, many times the term ' good wife' is mentioned and it is essentially understood as a woman who takes care of the house and listens to her husband. Again that is problematic. When we speak about gender equality, the idea of gender roles and how they have put women in a disadvantageous position cannot be ignored and if that thought is further reinforced in the bani, then people will surely follow it and not question it. I would be really happy and feel blessed to get answers and explanations to these and would love to be corrected where I am wrong in understanding all of this.
Sisterji would like to answer your questions but would like to know first that you are active otherwise it would be useless to type as u won't be reading it obviously Please reply so that it confirms you are here 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Despite our claims, we often fail to fulfill the wishes of the Guru in practice. Regrettably, one such instance is the prohibition on women performing Kirtan at the Golden Temple complex.
What about abortion on the west? Should women have the right to abort their babies if they don’t want to have it? When is abortion ok? Perhaps in the case of rape? But what about just unwanted pregnancy? Up to what month is it ok to terminate a pregnancy? Is this considered women’s rights?
On one hand you are saying that God is genderless and on the hand it is again and again mentioned in Guru Granth Sahib that the One is masculine and you are also saying that he is masculine and we humans are all brides who have to make our God husband happy by being obedient wives and then he selects the best one to keep with him, these examples straightaway put women at the lower level and the example of comparing women menstruation cycle with bad thoughts in mind, which clearly says that menstruation is a bad or dirty thing. Don't try to misinterpret and twist the meanings yo suit you..and then there is no bani (that I am aware of) is written by any woman and why we don't have any woman Guru. These things bother me again and again as s devotee sikh and I am disappointed how you are twisting the meaning of Gurbani to make it look like something which it is not.
How about just treat people like you would expect to be treated, and get rid of your fancy sayings and headgear and symbols... Pretty sad that there has to be a special Guru or other person that said all these fancy things so many years ago for everyone to follow. Drop all your past mumbo jumbo and just be a person, and you won't have any of these problems of misunderstanding this garbage...
Slakjaw Notsayin because it’s about becoming one with God this treat others like you want to be treated is ok only in the worldly ways this is the truth what u are saying is kind of rubbish and does not apply in all situations
@@jssinghjasdeep5231 I hear what you are saying, but you are also very deep into a religion, which makes it almost impossible for you to step back and imagine what it would be like if it never existed. What if you were never told about your religion and your ancient Guru or leader? The rest of the world and everyone else in it would still keep going. If people need their religion and tricky wording in a religions history and or writings to guide them through life, so they can benefit from some sort of afterlife, that's just sad... Life is too short to bother with interpretations and decoding ancient magical peoples fancy jargon and meanings. If your Guru was so wise, why didn't they write what they really meant without any confusion? Let me guess, you aren't allowed to question these sorts of things, are you? This is why religion and beliefs shouldn't be mentioned to people until they are 18 years old, so they can think about whats going on and make decisions for themselves. Why would you need someone from many years ago to explain woman's rights to you now? Men and women are people, so treat them like you would want to be treated and you shouldn't have any problems...
Slakjaw Notsayin this in not tricky words it’s truth the Guru is not human he is God in form and Sikhism is not a religion it a way of living life so you can merge with the one and you are talking to a Sikh bet you don’t know much a Sikh can question what you said and much more than that even to the point of God’s existence sure what you said is relevant but the world will head to a very bad direction thinking that worldly possessions would give them something and if just treat others like you want yourself to be treated was enough shouldn’t everyone be in peace right now you need to understand there is no trickery here Guru Granth Sahib Ji which is the living guru all teachings are towards merging with the one there are worldly teachings that too how you should handle worldly things according to spirituality what he said is take the love which is inherent in a mother or woman not saying men have no love but something are more inherent in both genders like the daring ness in men so that you can merge with the one showing that both genders are equally respected in Sikhism and what the Gurus talk about is eternal truth what u say might be true now but not relevant in future but what the gurus said will be relevant in future as well
You got a valid point @Slakjaw Notsayin. But wouldn't the world collapse into mutual anarchy if people weren't somehow scared into righteousness. - many instances of women barred from sitting on Guru Jis tabiya due to menstruation
- SRM under marriage says wife has to 'serve' husband but not the other way around
- Taksali maryada goes further and says a wife is to see husband as God over her while he is to see her as a faithful 'follower'

So aptly put. Thanks for bringing these questions up. I myself need clarity on these issues.

Why does it bother you if you can't change it? You can't go back in time and rearrange it can you?
As a devotee sikh is your place to live in the order of the Guru or to question the Guru?
@Veronika Zimmermann but the Gurus stood up Against oppression so that argument does not stand.
@Veronika Zimmermann a sikh lives in the hukam of the guru. Gurbani (Anand Sahib) says "place your intellect at the feet of the Guru."
