When I was a little boy I auditioned for school band and was rejected because my arms were “too short” to play the flute. So, the director asked if I can sing a song instead and I sang the first few bars of this song and she put me in chorus and I never stopped singing. Ha! Thank you, Robbie Dupree!!!

Your heard correctly on the "what a fool believes" sound because that was Michael McDonald with the Doobies while also on this song as the later chorus main backup vocals. You can almost hear the beard when he sings...

You are bang on saying that sounds like "What a Fool Believes". Robbee Dupree did not do that by accident, and you were sharp to pick it out.
First of all, love this song. When I was a child in the 80's, I used to love spinning my older sister's 45's (including this one) on the record player and pretend to be a dj on the radio.
It's a one hit wonder that has something in common with He's So Shy by the Pointer Sisters, which also came out in 1980. Both songs were, let's just say, "heavily influenced" by the hit song, What a Fool Believes by The Doobie Brothers from the year before. All great hit songs in their own right, don't get me wrong. Just a little sidenote for you.

I like the song but no disrespect. The song was released by Dupree in 1980. It immediately charted in the top 20, becoming a big hit during the summer of 1980 and the driving force on his debut album. In 1991, John D'Agostino of the Los Angeles Times described the song as "a blatant, rip-off of the Michael McDonald/Kenny Loggins composition "What a Fool Believes". The Washington Post noted similarities in both Dupree's vocal style and backing keyboards to "What A Fool Believes", mentioning that McDonald's publishers sought legal action, although McDonald himself did not accuse Dupree of stealing his song.
In 2017, the song was used in the American television crime drama series, Better Call Saul, in season 3, episode 10, titled "Lantern." Peace out.
