  • Horse Riding Lessons - How To Bend Your Horse
When training a horse you will need to understand how to bend your horse. Bending a horse is crucial for its suppleness and longevity so this is one dressage exercise you need to understand. In this video, I show you the horse riding basics involved with bending your horse and give you a riding exercise for the horse and for you to help you both understand how to bend correctly. I hope you enjoy it and I would love to hear in the comments how you go with the exercise.

I loved the suggestion to go inside and brush my teeth with my non dominant hand. When you get frustrated at your horse. Perfect advice.

Josie, when I search for a RUclips video to learn something specific about riding my horse, your videos inevitably pop up! Thank you for creating so many on such relevant horse topics.

I am self taught and have been riding for about 6 years.. I have never had a trainer so I find these sooo helpful for my horse who never got produced much in the flat work!! Ur explaining is just so clear and i always go out after and work on myself and her. Thanks Josie

Last night I was going to bed and was thinking of my ride on my 4 year old Haflinger, Stella.. She is like a Battleship! LOL! I said to myself..” tomorrow I have to look and see if Josie has a video on BEND.. and here you are!! 😂 Thank you as always from the USA!

Thanks, Josie, this was really clear. Any chance you have someone who could do some drone footage of this exercise? Or would Rebel totally freak out? For those of us who are visual learners, it would be super helpful to see from above. But your explanations and the good ground footage of the leg yield really helped in any case.

I don’t think it would bother Rebel once he was desensitised to it and to be honest it is something I have been thinking of doing. Most of my videoing is done by a pixio as I work on my own the majority of the time. My husband might end up with a drone for Christmas 😆. Great suggestion thank you 🙏🏻

The outside leg although mostly used for lateral direction, can be used here if the riders inside driving/aiding leg gets stuck at the moment the impulsion is lost, which is usually on the down beat of the trot or the soft side of the horse. I also keep my whip in the outside hand when on the right rein when a horse is stiff to the right, for me it seems to balance out the feel of the contact. I do this only on a not so forward going horse or one that is just starting and then use the correct way when they get for off the leg. Just a thought.

You're such a great teacher!! I was having a really difficult time visualizing and, in turn, translating that in to any meaningful form of training. But you make it SO clear and easy to understand that I almost feel silly for having such a tough time understanding in the first place! Lol! After watching your flexion and bending videos along with this one, it finally just clicked. Thank you for taking the time to continue making these very informative (and FUN!) videos that ultimately strengthen and improve the relationship between a horse and their rider.
