One off campaign. 1st Somerset Strikers. Not their real missions, not the holovid, but the making of the holovid. Four members of the greatest holomakers the Innersphere has known. Brought low by bombastic actors, A studio providing Inaccurate mechs, and threats of demonetization from Comstar's censorship board.
One suggestion: it would have been great if the players could have introduced their characters a bit before the start of the story. Would have helped to get into the story more easily in my humble opinion.
That was fun! I liked that the plot kept moving at a good pace without too much meandering, and the Game Baron did a good job prompting the other players to make narrative decisions while still shutting down anything too crazy. I also liked the camera angles and use of music (just enough, and in the right places). Great job, guys!
I recently got a copy of Destiny and have yet to get a group together to play. Seeing the mechanics done in this video is a great way for me to get a better understanding of the system in general. Been looking forward to seeing this!
Bringing a machine gun to an interrogation...that's almost Capellan of you! Seriously though, loved this one, I think it's definitely a keeper. I would suggest though, maybe a little background on your characters? Nothing huge, just a sentence or two just so we get a feel for who they are and it's not just Thom, Dan, and Rick running around the spaceport. I think Thom kind of hit on it, he got across being possessive of the tank and all, little character things like that are great.
I bring a tube of lube and a cattle prod... combined together... I've gotten all the information I have needed each time I needed to violate ... surprisingly not specifically listed....but it surely a violation of Anal Convention Treaty
Really dug this; the collaborative-DM approach is something I'm really not familiar with, but seeing it in action made a lot more sense than trying to read it out of the rulebook.
Really cool, looking forward to more sessions! Its hard to know when the story is playing out “properly” or if you are just going with the flow. Similar to how you introduce the forces in a destiny battlereport, Id love an intro on the characters, maybe a portrait
I do like the idea of MW:D games just being a bunch of Clan Loremasters discussing the exploits of certain people in the far future (33rd-36th century) and adding them to The Remeberence in one way or another
O_o I didn't realize anyone actually produced these for BT/MW. I would love to get into a group for something like this... (The playing part of it, not specifically the produced part.)
I wanted to also point out you do a great job GMing and keeping their interest throughout the session. I struggle as a GM/DM when my players are goofy or not as focused in universe as I want them to be because I spent time prepping for the session and I use music and ambient environment, voices, etc., to make it an immersive experience that I want them to enjoy. So when players reference movies or tell side stories, it gets me frustrated. And really, players should be somewhat focused (otherwise you might as well do something else). But I'm learning to roll with the energy of the group rather than run it how I want it to go as you did here as the whole point of playing is for everyone to have fun. As long as that's being achieved, it's a mission accomplished.
Man I feel you!! In my advanced age, I’ve realized it’s just part of the players. Either you have a hyper focused group or you have a group that likes the game for the social aspect. Sometimes it’s just night-to-night. Either way, it’s all good! I do agree though a little music, some visual aids, etc. can really help to “maintain” focus.
I expected more acting from the players (expressing their feelings, emotions or thoughts a bit more), but this style of gaming is faaar better than what I've seen on other channels. Also that would had been cool if you guys just used some sort of a map or just draw a sketch quickly to see where the characters are standing during an intense firefight.
Yeah that’s definitely part of ‘building the scene in the moment’ of DestinyRPG that you have to learn to consider when throwing out narrative ideas on your turn. And maybe too, if you want players to be comfortable throwing out ideas you need to let some things slide if it is really cool. But we’ll get better about it for sure!
Its a fundamental (and weird, agreed) feature of the RPG… it plays very different from any RPG I’m used to, and from a GM perspective makes it difficult (impossible?) to really plan any plot twists and turns. This pass through really was for us to cut our teeth and see how it goes - we have another session coming out in a couple weeks that is more combat heavy, and the dynamic ended up gravitating (I think?) more towards a traditional RPG. It was fun though for sure, but if you don’t have gamers that understand an RPG, it could definitely be disastrous haha
@@DeathfromAboveWargaming I think the hardest thing would be to find active players instead of the passive types. Your group seems not to need a lot of prodding to act, should be a fun watch!
There are optional rules for using the traditional One GM Many Players format. Not hard to switch. I do believe that you would need more experienced players for the default method.
I was on the fence about Destiny. It felt like a furry fish: Too simple to be Battletech and too crunchy to be a narrative game, but I've got to say that watching you guys playing has totally sold me on it. I'm excited to get it on the table now.
I wonder if having sort of system where each player has a certain number of times they can influence the narrative in a session would help bridge the gap between this and a more traditional role playing system. Perhaps both other players and the GM could have opportunities to give out more narrative cues to reward players who had more interesting or satisfying contributions to the evolving story.
It's hard to beat "Mech Commander" for a Battletech-specific version of Dungeon Master. Plus the abbreviation "MC" already carries some nice connotation for someone running an event as "Master of Ceremonies".
please continue this series, it's great! A few questions: in what era does this campaign take place? Will you be incorporating Tabletop maps for mech vs mech or mech vs vehicle combat? And, most importantly, when will we see the next episode?
As this is one of very few videos about MechWarrior Destiny I can find, Is there mech customization? Skimming the book I don't see anything about it. I guess another thing I'm having a hard time finding answers for is what books have mechs/vehicles for conversion. Should I just buy Technical Readout: Dark Age?
Our website has a whole card builder that will do the math for you. Patrons can automagically generate cards from MegaMek data files (free). Mech stats can be found across several Tech Readouts and online. I’s start w megamek.
If I was a player, I would say the governor is controlling both sides, playing a theatrical play to deceive his masters for reasons unknown, well, known because whatever he hides behind that play must be shady.
While I appreciate the effort put into this, I really think the roundtable storytelling just doesn't work all that well. It requires every player to have GM skills, solid lore knowledge, the ability to jump in and out of the GM role, the desire to do so... I just think it's asking too much from everyone. Not that it can't be done, and it did get going after a while, but I think that's a testament to your group rather than the viability of Destiny.
I won’t argue - and that is exactly how we felt the first couple of times we played. But I do think the system has some merit if you give it a chance. Still does not feel as “natural” as a traditional RPG for me. We’ll see how I feel after the final session. Maybe we’ll do a debrief.
I was very opposed to the idea but it won me over. Definitely will never be as rich as a GM (sorry *game baron*) led game with a solidly constructed story arc and npc engagements driving it but it’s meant to be different than that. And it succeeds. So if you keep in frame the intent it’s easy to enjoy the experience! It was super fun
I had a similar problem with it too as I read the rulebook, but there are some optional tweaks in the book for the more "traditional" RPG experience. Though I'm not a fan of this over AToW, I can recognize how it's another "tool in the toolbox" to get people interested in Battletech as a setting. There are some players that don't want a lot of mechanical tidbits in the way of just telling a story and rolling the dice every so often. Good for them, as for this video I'll catch whatever parts pop up and if they do a debrief. It'll be interesting to see a playthrough with this ruleset at least.

It is - definitely more of a game that is social and easy, less about the crunch. In that regard it is great for new players and easy to get into for existing fans.
This was first game so hard to say on skills. There were a lot, and personally I think I took too many so my modifiers weren’t great for challenge rolls. The layers of char creation are fulfilling. I enjoyed the process and it was very straightforward.
Yes the Skills and the # of points that you have to spend at start are very light (thin). I gave more skill points to my PC's for non-combat areas to add some flavor. An extra +1 or +2 on 2d6 isn't too broken if you aren't piling on Pilot/Gunnery.

So, Tropic Thinder, Inner Sphere edition?
It was real, think about it... is it more likely the propaganda was that it didn't happen or that it did, and they want to cover it up?
If you look at it from a military-type mindset, you have the Jump Master for an airborne unit. So... Drop Master?
if you mean instead of dm good idea. but i think in lore mechwarriors have a mechcommander or lance controller/captain. still like that idea though
Intro cinematic for mechcommander for instance.
I like Most drop master . Another idea was Master Chief , like drop Master more.
