Please watch: "Vintage Fender Jazz Bass From Japan" • Vintage Fender Jazz Ba... -~- Fender Jazz Bass Gets Bill Lawrence Pickups Have a safe and fun Holiday
I've used Bill & Becky's pup's for years in many guitars of mine and builds for others. His Q-Filter is really sweet too instead of a capacitor. They really shift the tonal curve around in a good kinda way. Merry Christmas Dave, have a great 2018.
I did exactly what you're doing to that jazz bass as I did to my jazz bass and I wasn't impressed with the results. The Lawrence pickups are fine but the original ones were just as good as the new ones.
A USA jazz bass already has pretty good alnico pickups so this could be a unnecessary upgrade in my opinion. But more work for you Dave. Thanks for all the vids.
I have a pair of Bill Lawrence active electronic humbuckers in my eighties-era BC Rich Stealth bass and they are the loudest, most distinct pickups I've ever heard. Excellent, even sound but, my God, they're incredibly and frighteningly/amazingly loud. The magnets are huge also.
So I know that a Jazz bass is a noisy critter if both pickups aren't both on , Would the copper shielding fix that ?? Mine has just the black paint shielding just wondering.
There's more than one Bill Lawrence. The pickup maker was originally born in Koln, Germany as Willi Lorenz Stich, but took the name 'Bill Lawrence' as a stage name when he was a young jazz musician. Then he got into pickup making. A former partner of his managed to get the 'Bill Lawrence' trade name as 'Original Bill Lawrence' or OBL, making pickups in West Germany, while he moved to the US and made pickups under the Wilde brand with his wife Becky. He passed away in 2013 but the business is still going. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Lawrence_(guitar_maker)
Hi Dave , Marry Christmas and Happy New Year , to you and your family , your videos give me a great deal of enjoyment throughout the year , Thank you very much , Take care and Cheers .
Hey Dave have a great Christmas, and thanks for all the videos this year.Being retired is not what I thought it would be, but with videos like yours they make my day for sure. Thanks again.Peace.
Another great vid, thanks so much for all you do for us. I recently saw someone shield the wires instead of the cavity and it was actually even quieter. Give it a try sometime.
Hey Dave, did you know that on jazz pups, the bridge pup pole placements are a tad more wider or longer than than the necks. You can tell which is which by holding them up to one another. One of the pups poles are further apart than the other. You’ll see it when you hold them up to each other. Anyway, that’s how it’s always been IME.
With very few exceptions, like either the Squier or MIM both pickups are the same. I forget which one I ran across, but Bill Lawrence (Becky and Shannon) will make size correct pickups. Made to order.
To add to the many things I don't understand, the pole pieces don't come near being directly underneath the E and G strings (at least), on either pickup. Not to poop on BL pickups, but I know it's not the string spacing. Anyone know why this isn't an issue? Merry Christmas to all the DWOFS universe!
The BLs have nine pole pieces. The extra pole piece means that the strings will always be over the magnetic field. On standard F pickups, the E and G string are near the edge of the field and so can sound a bit lower in volume.
IMDb pages are often very out of date. I know he mentioned it at least TWICE on his videos I've seen including a few where he was wearing the expanse crew shirt.
Dave's World of Fun Stuff The Expanse is the best sci fi show I’ve seen in a long time. Congrats. Love the channel, awesome content. Hope you and yours have a blessed holiday season Dave.
I've got a BL rail as well as one original Schecter pickup and the BL seems to only put out about 1/2 as much, maybe 2/3 and a much more tinny sound. It was in there when I got the guitar. I may try switching it to the neck side to see what difference that makes. And Merry Christmas!
The "real" BL company run by Bill's wife doesn't make a "rail" J-Bass pickup -- "Bill Lawrence USA" products come from another company run by Bill's long-ago former business partner and there's a big quality difference.
Hey Dave, I hope you can answer me a question. I have been reading the comments about the number of pole pieces on these BL pickups. People are talking about the strings being directly over the pole pieces, too. Now, this is more for a regular guitar but when a guitar player bends strings, the strings moves and does not stay over the pole pieces. So, Why do people make such a big fuss about strings being directly over the pole pieces when half the time, they will bent and not be over the pole pieces? I never hear any guitar lose volume when a bend is executed. I do understand that pickups are designed so that the strings sit directly over the pole pieces but, again, when you bend strings, they move away from being over the pole pieces. Do I make sense?
Hey Dave. Quick question- I’m installing solderless, active EMG’s in my mim jazz bass. What are your thoughts on where to put the damn 9v? Thanks in advance and cheers brother.
I did a similar thing back in the 90's to my Jazz, so I had to rout a cavity for the 9V. I did it on the top of the body, near the output jack. It goes without saying, but don't do what I did. I eventually covered the cavity with a neck plate for a bolt on. Better than the duct tape I used back the day. Dave would shit...
I have their P46 pickup in a parts bass I built. Great pickup. I should a grab a set of jazz pickups for another project
Made a big difference with the shielding, nice job Dave!Cheers

Good quality instrument, great quality video. Always educational, Dave!
Nice, love the wiring and finish vids. Actually I like them all, including the food vids. Thx bud
the red and blue dots are simple, blue for neck for cooler sound, red for bridge for hotter sound, blue red, cool hot, simple
Thanks for yet another year of fun stuff Dave.
happy Christmas from merrie England !
Good work on that bass, Dave! I kinda wanted to see the shielding job as I have never seen it done. Anyway awesome Mod! Great sounding bass!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year all. It sure is a different video when he likes the machine he is working on... and the pickups.
I have a set of those La Bella strings on my bass - they really are pretty wonderful.
Are those 5/6 string pick ups Dave?
9 pole?
Hey Dave, happy Christmas to you and your clan. All the best for 2018. Brian
Merry Christmas Dave, hope you been nice this year, or Gootchamoto, Hockaloogie will get you
Merry Christmas to u and yours Dave. Cheers from Boston
Love your content Dave it makes my day Merry Christmas

MERRY CHRISTMAS DAVE!!!!!
Nice work. Happy Holidays, Dave!
i thought he only used to do guitar pickups...learn all the time.... Dave we need more Thin Lizzy ending demos
I've always got the impression he's a bass player
A USA jazz bass already has pretty good alnico pickups so this could be a unnecessary upgrade in my opinion. But more work for you Dave. Thanks for all the vids.

I'd rather be whole-assed than ass-holed! Merry Christmas to all.
I have a set of Becky and Bill’s five string pickups ready to install. Looking forward to it. They were MUCH cheaper than any other alternative
The funniest chap on the net. Love you Dave. Legend. Hey...do you sell your logo on a T'Shirt?
Great video Dave! :)
So I know that a Jazz bass is a noisy critter if both pickups aren't both on , Would the copper shielding fix that ?? Mine has just the black paint shielding just wondering.
Excellent, I had one just like that a few years ago. Back when they had the S1 switch on it. Just another bass I should have kept lol.
I’d rather be whole assed. Couldn’t agree more 🤣
The ad that just popped up in the middle of the ad was for the evil empire :D
Doesn't sound like a Fender anymore.
LaBella Flats 45-105
Bill Lawrance is an English musician and producer. Seems he developed these pups!
There's more than one Bill Lawrence. The pickup maker was originally born in Koln, Germany as Willi Lorenz Stich, but took the name 'Bill Lawrence' as a stage name when he was a young jazz musician. LoL ... Yes Dave you always use your whole ass ; D...Merry Ho Ho to you and yours!
Joke of the day.
Who has the most boring job in the world?
The guy who puts the numbered dice on the strings at the LaBella factory.
Aren't Bill Lawrence/Wilde pickups hum canceling? So why the shielding?
they ask I do :(
@@DavesWorldofFunStuff A servant to the bung-holio public. Sir, you get a Laurel.... and Hardy handshake.
Nice job. Shielding quieted that monster down really nice. Your set ups are top notch. Flat wounds? Hmmmm. Not for me unless fretless. 👍🏼
He's still grumpy, he's just not verbally, randomly fornicating in-animate objects by the dozen. He's too smart for that anyway.
Merry Christmas and happy Boxing Dave! See what I did there? Love the videos, man. Love from the south shore of Lake Ontario!
Happy Christmas, Dave, and a prosperous New Year. All the best from England :-) .
Look at the state of the routing typical over priced fender hyped junk
You should see the shit coming from over seas.
So would I need to shield a les paul if I do a Jimmy Page style conversion with coil split and series/ parallel switching and a phase switch?
Hi Dave , Marry Christmas and Happy New Year , to you and your family , your videos give me a great deal of enjoyment throughout the year , Thank you very much , Take care and Cheers .
Dave, try okeefes working hands cream
Ya just can't go wrong with a Fender Bass....Jazz or Precision.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family Dave.
Are these the Wilde made Bill Lawrence pickups or the other Bill Lawrence pickups that the actual man Bill Lawrence wasn't associated with?
Hey Dave have a great Christmas, and thanks for all the videos this year.Being retired is not what I thought it would be, but with videos like yours they make my day for sure. Thanks again.Peace.
bill lawrence, the real bill lawrence, not the other guy
was a HELL of a guitarist, most people don't realize that
I put a set of Bill Lawrence pickups in my Jazz bass and all I got was a bowl full of sauerkraut. Hahahahaha!
Nice to see/hear a play test at the end. You haven't been doing that very much lately.
Merry Christmas, Dave!
First time I did corned beef, I forgot about it. Then I came home with a date, and the whole apartment was corned.
One pretty Jazz Bass. Merry Christmas Dave, and thanks for all you share.
Merry goochmas Dave!
I'm a guitar player but I gotta say, that's a sweet ass bass ! Hey , hope you and family have a great Christmas ! PEACE
Another great vid, thanks so much for all you do for us. I recently saw someone shield the wires instead of the cavity and it was actually even quieter. Give it a try sometime.
I've never heard shielding make such a big difference!! Thanks for that one Dave!
Am I crazy or do the A and D strings look too far gapped?
Love ya, Dave. Thanks for the great videos. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Dave!!
Wishing you and your loved ones a happy and safe festive season.
Hey Dave were can i send my bass to you?

If you live in Canada and you need your guitar looked at; give it to Dave, take his advice and pay him his money. Mr. Dave is good at what he does!
Shit I'm not even in Canada and want to send him mine
How would I send a guitar to you to be repaired?
9 polepieces instead of the usual 8, interesting.
To add to the many things I don't understand, the pole pieces don't come near being directly underneath the E and G strings (at least), on either pickup. Not to poop on BL pickups, but I know it's not the string spacing. Anyone know why this isn't an issue?

+Dick Jones Thanks, upon further review l now count the 9 poles. Have to admit I first noticed something 'odd' about them. Every day is a school day!
Dave, a while back you mentioned you worked on a SciFi show out of Toronto, was it Dark Matter?
I remember him mentioning the expanse.
that does not show up under his IMDb page
IMDb pages are often very out of date. I know he mentioned it at least TWICE on his videos I've seen including a few where he was wearing the expanse crew shirt.
Dave's World of Fun Stuff The Expanse is the best sci fi show I’ve seen in a long time. Congrats. Love the channel, awesome content. Hope you and yours have a blessed holiday season Dave.
So are you going to do Season 3 of The Expanse?
I've got a BL rail as well as one original Schecter pickup and the BL seems to only put out about 1/2 as much, maybe 2/3 and a much more tinny sound. It was in there when I got the guitar. I may try switching it to the neck side to see what difference that makes.

Not a bass
Do your corned beef in a pressure cooker.
What's with the extra pole piece?
have a good new year Dave, have fun
Merry Christmas Dave.
I like grumpy Dave better.
To each his own, I suppose. Cheers Dave!
Dave must be feeling festive
Send him a shitbox guitar to fix, that'll do it. lol
Merry Christmas, Dave!!
Wilde L500L is a MUST HAVE bridge pickup for alder HSS stratocasters. Becky is making super stuff. Forever the real Bill Lawrence.
Why?

That is a fine piece of bass!
Really you think so , do some research fendes are for sheep
Thanks for doing a wiring vid. Please unblock me from posting at the group!
Dave's World of Fun Stuff Maybe I posted too much...but I’m getting a lot of love from your members. Posted as Terry Mehlhorn on fuckbook
Blah Blah Blah... This vid could have lasted 10 minutes and contain all relevant info as well
Bill Lawrence pickups are nice, got one in the bridge position in one of my guitars. Cheers from Maine and Merry Christmas Dave!

Thanks much man!

Nothing says cheap like Fender routing the shit out of their basses just to say a few pennies.
