I was considering Spectral or Trek Rail. Ended up going with gen 4 Trek Rail 9.8. The bike was amazing. Glad i didnt buy this to avoid trouble. On the other side, i think it would be harsh to put Canyon down. I think they have done incredible job and huge props for owning up to the problem and calling it out. I happen to own a Spectral ON as my only bike and it's really anoying me. I do think that this is absolut top priority for canyon because longterm it could really harm them more to not get us covered in a good way then doing everything possible to solve this issue.
Love my CF9 and I’m really hoping for a good outcome on this. My battery is currently at an REI where they are awaiting direction from Canyon. Thanks for the video.
Im currently riding the Canyon Lux and it's possibly the sweetest bike I've ever riden. I've cycled for nearly 40 years and have been a sponsored rider & worked in the cycle industry, so it's safe to say riden most of the top/leading bike brands!
My battery is affected (casing cracked) on my Spectral:On CF9 with 720 Wh battery. So far, I haven‘t been too bothered not being able to ride because I rarely do at this time of the year, but I‘m really looking forward to their solution, and hopefully owners won‘t have to wait too long before riding their bikes again.
What Canyon really says, is check your battery for cracks. They show where to check, its easy. If there arent any cracks its ok for now. Check the numbers on battery to see if its an affected battery. Early Dec they will have answers.
If your number does fall in the range they have stated not to ride the bike, but if its outside the range it should be fine. I don't know how many of these model bikes fall in the range but given they are not available at the moment I think it is going to be most of them. I will share when I learn more.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee it won't be fine I had the same thing happen with pc computer hardware with an Asus motherboard mine wasn't the same model nor in the serial range, it burned the same in 2023, in 2024 my Intel cpu broke same thing, do not ever think the serial range think means you're safe you're not, Canyon doesn't even recall in other countries all this means is that on that particular range a lawsuit would have them dead to rights so they absolutely HAVE to recall them
This IS NOT a Canyon issue! This is Shimano spec Battery issue by Trendpower. Canyon is just stuck dealing with it and likely will have Trendpower build an improved case then ship those out. I wonder if it is an issue on the 720WH battery or only the 900? I have over 3000 miles of Rocky riding on my CF-8 Spectral On with NO issues and the battery case is perfect looking. I am not upset with Canyon and got a great bike for under 5K! Same bike from Specialized was $7500.
The book stops with the dealer. Canyon sold the bike with the battery so from a consumer perspective it's the dealer (Canyon's) issue. They've had plenty of time to investigate and resolve the issue but for some reason had not until now. Their fate will lie in how they intend to restore faith for their customers (if at all). I've already ditched them in favour of another brand.
It’s still Canyons problem. When I buy a car from Ford or Chrysler with a faulty engine, they can’t put the blame on the manufacturer of the engine. They can’t put, but that has n o t h i n g to do with the buyer of the vehicle. It’s still up to the seller to warranty this.
@@stevendegreef93 Yes, it's their problem to fix but it isn't that Canyon is a crap bike like some are saying. The Canyon bike isn't failing, just a component dictated by Shimano.
Man what a disappointment. Thank you so much for this video. Almost pulled a trigger on SpectralON couple of weeks ago. I am not sure how they are going to recover from this business wise and reputation wise. What a shame
I have a Spectral:on and got the notice as well. The 900Wh battery was the primary innovation on this gen spectral on, disappointing that is where they cheaped out. I am getting a new bike in 2025 and was heavily leaning Canyon before this.
Man I was debating between the spectral CFR and Specialized Levo Comp Carbon. And I’m so thankful I chose the latter. I wasn’t impressed with Canyon as a company. I didn’t like how they have few or nonexistent service centers in my area. Thanks for a few RUclips MTB folks who recommended Specialize - I went in that direction! Thank you, Jesus! 😮

Environmental nightmare and we lost passports and everything but our underwear. Don’t trust them if they can’t get wet. Lithium boat fires are pretty common

I have the Spectral ON with the 900 Wh battery and I see cracks at the fixation bolds. But in my case the battery is not working. What I mean is that I cannot charge it not turn the bike ON again. Do you have the same problem or is the bike running fine ?
I do not have that problem. It is possible that you have damage inside in which case I would bring that battery in so it can be disposed of immediately.
@ I have had the bike for a year and no issues. I took out the battery once and it was so hard to put the screws back in. It feels like I stripped them out. If it is not cracked is it still safe to use. I have noticed a small decrease in battery life like 15 percent too
@ I have two bikes with batteries that have no cracks and will not be riding them but winter just arrived so I’m in a different situation than many people. Canyon says do not keep riding it but I think you need to decide for yourself if you want to take the risk.
This does NOT apply to the Torque on 7. That is their aluminum option, with a different battery made by Shimano. If you own one of those bikes, they are not affected by this issue.
First of all follow instructions from Canyon/ batt supplier to avoid warranty void. Further on, do you have the option of 'quick charge' on this batt's? If so, don't ever do that, organise yourself that you don't; best = max 4A. Also, decharge/charge between 30-80% and leave the batt at 70% ( storage)when not in use. You could also check, when charging the batt outside the bike, if it heats a lot and if the cracks get bigger. This indicates swelling; chances are small that it does, as they're cylinder cell batt's. If you test this put batt& charger on a stone floor away from other stuff and put a extinguisher within reach. Seems more like a mechanical problem to me; big/long batt and an as light as possible bike...to rattle down gnarly single tracks. I always use foam/tape/tyraps to stop the rattling of my batt'a (Bosch,E-fit)
