  • Enjoy the ride on this line which was once part of NH Old Colony service. the Boston area has always been a fascination for me and you were here much said about a variety of Boston area topics, in addition to the railroad. Somehow we managed to get to Boston on time being shoved by one of those mechanical monstrosities. (when you’re retired, it’s easy to lose track as to what date it is. Also with all of the navigating I had to do on my GPS to get to the station, it was hard to tell which way Boston was so when I say the track goes to Hyannis it actually goes to Boston.)

At about 8:00 in your video you passed several GP40-2. When I worked the FEC during the early 80’s we would run a lot of GP40-2 on our unit train that would haul rock from Rinker Materials in Medley Florida to City Point in Florida. I really enjoyed those engines. We also had GP40’s that were great running engines.

GP40-2’s were my favorite engine on Conrail. They are great reliable engines like the SD40-2’s. I’ve seen them in FEC. I’ve never met a railroad employee who disliked those engines. Most I can honestly say love EMD’s. What I’ve heard employees say about GE’s is unprintable

The Tie issue on the line was defective concrete ties.

Driving to the station the GPS had me going in all different directions so I wasn’t sure which way was which. 😀😀. Somehow I believed that was the direction of Hyannis. Wow, those concrete ties must’ve been really crappy.

@@3985uprr while they were changing them out, freight was restricted to 15mph and passenger was restricted to 50. They had gauge rods all over the place to keep the track in gauge.

Back before 2011 this line had concrete ties. They were replaced with wood ties because they had cracks in them. Green bush line still has them because they used a different batch of concrete ties.

    • @MattyC62185

@@JoeyLovesTrains A lot of them had to be replaced because they were crumbling. As Tim says these Kawasaki and Hyundai Rotem Bi-Level cars are Heavy and it wore the ties and tracks on this line out. I know as I’ve said before what was used to reactivate this line was of poor quality. Hence the need to replace them when those heavy by levels tore them up it is crap like this is why the MBTA has the reputation that it does, and feel like it is capable of so much better Performance wise, but the biggest thing that bugs me is seeing diesels under a wire, where there should be electrics

I wonder how come a lot of the time on the double track portion going through the city of Brocton, they run the trains on the opposite track a lot of the time. Therefore at Monticello station, how are you support to know which track the train will arrive on before the train arrives. If your on the wrong platform when the train arrives, the train will block the pedestrian crossing, and you will miss your trains. Why don't they always run the trains on the right tracks? Outbound trains on the outbound platform, inbound trains on the Inbound platform. At Hallifax Station it is also just as confusing.

Those are the last three major cities within 50 miles of Boston that do not have commuter rail service interesting point you could take a train from South Station to fall River and look at the USS Massachusetts from there.
