A cyclotron is a type of particle accelerator, so named because it was the first one to accelerate particles in a circle, rather than a straight line.

Looks like Starscream was left out cuz that seems like a universal name but there are some odd ones:
    Korean: Scream (스크림 Seukeurim)
Mandarin: Hóng Zhīzhū (红蜘蛛, "Red Spider")

A somewhat minor one that actually applied to a figure rather than a character in the show: The figure we know as Thundercracker would make sense as a name looking at the colours… _buuuut_ if you’ve seen the shows those colors may also look familiar. Indeed, in Japan that figure is actually just representative of Starscream’s late series power up instead.

Foreign names, names close to them, or names made as references to specific aspects of the characters are the perfect solution to having two different iterations of the same character coexist in the same universe. For my personal canon, Armada Wheeljack goes by Rampart (nod to his Japanese name of Rampage), Armada Blurr goes by Sunbolt, Armada Scavenger goes by Terrastomper, Side Swipe goes by Right-Hook, Hoist goes by SD-74 (what was written on the side of his excavator mode), and Cyclonus goes by Dunestorm.

    • @rayvenkman2087
      @rayvenkman2087 Год назад

I’d use Cyclonus’s Hungarian name of Ciklon for Armada Cyclonus. It means Cyclone which still connects him to the G1 predecessor but different enough to divorce him from the other Cyclonus’ Armada.

5:40 Actually, in Russian localisation "Blurr" sounds more like "Blaire".
7:29 Red Alert was called "Panicker" only in G1 localisation. As far I can remember, in Russian localisation of Armada he still called "Red Alert".
Btw, my personal favorite is a Russian localisation of G1 Skids name - "Тормоз" (Tormoz), which translates as "Brake", but in the Russian lexicon the word "Tormoz" is also often called, well, slow-thinking people, which, I think, was intended by our translators.

They did something interesting with Optimus in the Polish dub. We took "Prime" and went about it from another angle, ending with "Optimus Pierwszy" (Optimus the First).
Which made sense to kid me. Primes are basically royalty/Popes of Cybertron, being closest to their god via the Matrix, right? So a king-sounding "surname" was appropiate.

    • @Vampyr787

Polish translation of the Armada names is pretty interesting, as there actually is some idea to it. Autobot names have the tendency to end with "-us" (Optimus, Alarmus, Piorunus - with some exceptions, but at least the core three characters had some consistency), and there is also some consistency to Decepticons. Their names often end with "-tron" (Megatron, Krzykotron, Cyklotron). I wonder if that was to show that maybe the names pay some tribute to their leaders? There are OptimUS and MegaTRON, but then there are all the odd ones so... yeah
Also somebody else pointed that out - Optimus' full translation seem to be inspired by the royal titles. Primes are sort of a royalty and the translation of "Prime" could literally mean "the first one", kinda like with kings and queens - Elisabeth The First, George The First - translating polish "Optimus Pierwszy" literally would mean "Optimus The First", like he was a part of dynasty, who he is in some way.
BTW pretty good pronounciation of Piorunus 👍

A cool example is Depth Charge's Chinese Mandarin name. It's Ji Xianfeng; which is basically Daring Vanguard. His Taiwan name; Mo-guel Yu (Manta Ray), isn't too shabby either. A couple of other neat ones are the the Italian original toy name (Rattilus) and Russian name (Krysohvat; which translates as Rats Grip) for Rattrap, Quickstrike's Italian name (Serpex), Rampage's Taiwan name (Moxie; Demon Crab), Ravage's Chinese Mandarin Beast Wars name (Lueduoshou; Ravening Beast), the Polish name (Brzytwozora), French cartoon dub name (Serdacier), and Hungarian name (Legszelo; which is Airslicer) for Airazor.
On a less positive note; there's Ravage's Polish name (Dewastator; no joke) and Beast Wars Taiwan name (Robin). Along with Airazor's Italian video pack release name (Falco; like a member of the Star Fox team). Heck, Japan basically just added an extra 'r' to Airazor's name; making it Airrazor. Dinobot 2's Taiwan name (Ebaolong; Evil Violent Dinosaur") becomes less fitting with the death of Rampage. As for Japan, they refer to him as Dinobot just like with the original.

Inferno I feels fits the Predacon Fireant more than the Autobot Firetruck. Inferno refers to the Italian word for Hell, so it is already odd enough naming a Heroic Autobot after Hell of all places. Inferno can also be used in reference to a massive amount of fire, which is pretty antithetical to a firetruck which is made to extinguish fires. Meanwhile Predacon Inferno is not only hellishly psychotic but also a pyromaniac.

Barricade has become very synonymous with the Bayverse character; to the point where the G1 character has been almost entirely forgotten. Similar case for Blackout.

With polish dub of Armada they started with a goal to make all autobot names end with "us" after Optimus and all decepticon names end with "tron" after Megatron. Eventually they stopped and characters introduced later don't have it. As for Sparkplug becoming Liderus I think it was caused by the fact that Armada english dub sometimes called some characters wrong names and in the first appearance of Sparkplug he was called Leader-1. Still most polish collectors prefer to use english names.

Energon: Overdrive -> Cliffjumper, Wheeljack -> Downshift, Sprung -> Bulkhead, Superion -> Superion Maximus, Blast Arm -> Strongarm, Air Glide -> Skyblast, Ironhide and Irontread -> Demolisher, Shockfleet -> Mirage, Snowstorm -> Snow Cat, Nightscream -> Starscream, Laserwave -> Shockblast (who's ironically a placeholder name for Shockwave)...
Buildron -> Constructicon Maximus, Bruticus -> Bruticis Maximus, Mega Zarak -> Scorponok (like how in Japan with Headmasters, the larger Scorpion form is named Master Zarak instead of Scorponok), Commander Jaguar -> Battle Ravage, Shadowhawk -> Divebomb, Dinobot -> Cruellock, Chrome Horn -> Insecticon, Afterburner -> Storm Jet, Sling (seriously...what?) -> Sky Shadow, Skydive -> Terradive, Air Rider -> Treadshot, Firebolt -> Windrazor, Ariel -> Arcee (yes, in Japan she was named after Elita-One's original form. Also ironic that she had her name changed to Arcee since multiple Arcees since then become motorcycles; Earthspark being a rare exception), Red Alert -> Prowl, Skyfire -> Jetfire (the irony considering the legal issues that forced Hasbro to use the name Skyfire in the original cartoon)...
Scavanger -> Steamhammer, Long Haul -> Duststrom, Gren -> Wideload, Onslaught -> Barricade, Blast Off -> Blackout, Swindle -> Blight, Brawl -> Kickback, Vorter -> Stormcloud, Pulse -> Scattor, Beam -> Skyboom, Laser -> Wreckage, and Inferno Volt -> Roadblock

      Animated (English to Japanese):
Bulkhead -> Ironhide (while we here in the US wrongfully applied that name to Roadbuster; Takara was misguided it in using the name for this guy), Sentinel Prime -> Sentinel, Rodimus Prime -> Rodimus, Ironhide -> Armorhide (the name's serviceable, but Takara should've just kept his English name), and Ramjet -> Not Ramjet (Ramujetto).
As for notable non-Japanese names for Animated:
Tverdoloby (Russian; Bulkhead...still fits him better than Ironhide), Bumbly (Arabic; Bumblebee), Da-huang-feng (Mandarin; Bumblebee), Syshhik (Russian; Prowl), Chrapovick (Russian; Ratchet), Tongtian Xiao (Mandarin; Ultra Magnus...I like this name for him), Sentinela Prime (Portuguese; Sentinel Prime), Bronevik (Russian; Ironhide), Chernaya Vdova (Russian; Blackarachnia), Elita Odin (Russian; Elita-One), Osa (Russian; Wasp), Wreck-Sauger (German; Wreck-Gar), Pattumiera (Italian; Wreck-Gar), Ozimondice (French; Wreck-Gar), Romuloinen (Finnish; Wreck-Gar; surprisingly a cool name), Luomu (Mandarin; Lugnut), Hong Zhizhu (Mandarin; Starscream...somehow this manages to work), Skandalist (Russian; Starscream...this seems fitting), Tulho (Portuguese; Scrapper), Taiyangfeng (Mandarin; Sunstorm...suits him sell just like his English name), Yunxuan (Mandarin; Blackout), Hei Yu Lieren (Taiwan; Lockdown...legit creepy name), Feng Suo (Mandarin; Lockdown), and Shengbo (Taiwan; Soundwave).

Since you skipped the Russian name of Jetfire and others I'll add it here, in russia he is called EXTERMINATOR, Sideways is hermit and others I don't remember. Most of those names are carry over from g1, vut the funniest thing to me is sixshot situation: in g1 he was called six charger, in energon he was revolver and in titans return his headmaster called revolver

exterminator? Ну какое-то слишком громкое слово для истребителя. Как никак его оригинальное имя jetfire, а jet - истребитель. Просто нельзя сравнить jet с каким нибудь обычным plane.
