Well explained tutorial. I used to get bumps really bad as well but since using the DE method and plenty of trial and error, things have improved drastically. Even more so now that I primarily use a Single Edge razor and shave in the shower. The routine for those with extremely coarse hair that curls very tightly is an extensive one that requires attention to detail. But it is possible to get a good shave without the crater face cluster of bumps.
Larry, you have such a calm and collected manner and I really enjoy listening to the deliberate articulate way you speak. Of course the distinguished English accent is really cool too. I wish I could have you as my barber. That would make my monthly haircuts enjoyable and a much more pleasant experience being able to chat with a nice easy-going person. Alas I live in Singapore, a country in Asia very far from the UK. The barbers here hardly say a word and when they do, it's pretty simple things like how are you doing and how's your day been so far. It's nice having someone who could provide tips and advice and basically just chat about stuff and catch up on things everytime you see them.
By the way, I read somewhere that using damp tea bags are pretty good on the skin after a shave as well. Not sure if black tea would stain the skin though, perhaps green tea bags should be used. A product I really have found to be a good addition to my post shave routine is tea tree oil. I slap some on liberally after I shave and it works wonderfully as an astringent. I can feel the sling sting as it kills the germs on any cuts I may have suffered during the shave.
This was a really interesting watch. I was scared off of wet shaving for years, i'll only do my head this way. But after watching this and your video about 5 ways to avoid razor bumps, i'm thinking twice. Thank you Larry.
Rylan T. The biggest mistake black people make when wet shaving, is not using a shaving brush with a gently shaving cream to rake the hair out of their faces, by performing circular motions, with cream on brush to prepare the face for shaving - failing to this leaves the hair in your face, in a prime position to cause bumps on the face
Thanks for the additional info. Certainly preparation makes a big difference. Sharing with my brothers and i think.... no, i'm definitely going to give a try when i get paid next.
@@tarrestanley2698 Hey, sorry for the delayed response I didn't actually see this until a few moments ago. I went another way completely and used this formula allegedly made in the early 1900's called Black magic shaving powder. It's highly reliable but inaccurate so I detail with a Phillips Oneblade. If your in UK you can get one from executiveshaveing.co.uk there are now to cheaper versions of this razor the core is about £70 made out of a Tritan Polymer and the oneblade hybrid which is made out of the Tritan Polymer and the stainless steel which will run you about £180
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS PREVENTING OF INGROWN HAIRS: 1. THOU SHALT NOT USE DIRTY BLADES! Using a blade that's been used way too many times. Yes, this one may be obvious, but be sure to keep your used tools as clean as possible. Soap and rubbing alcohol will destroy bacteria. 2. HONOR THY DELICATE SKIN! Too many blades! If you are prone to ingrown hairs then you don’t need 3 or more blades. 3. DO NOT TAKE PREP TIME IN VAIN! You should be using a warm/hot water prep (5 mins). Then leave the shaving creme on for more than 3 minutes to really soften the hair. The hair stubble should literally fall away with little or no pressure at all. Pressing hard is the problem! Be gentle ya'll. 4. THOU SHALT NOT GO AGAINST THE GRAIN! Shaving against the grain. Shave in the direction of hair growth (usually down, but perform a face map to be sure). 5. THOU SHALT NOT PRESS! Pressing too hard on the skin with the blade. A gliding, light touch is all you need. This is likely your biggest issue. 6. THOU SHALT NOT PASS! Too many quick passes with the blade. One pass per hairy area - going 1-2 inches downward at a time - will prevent ingrown hairs. Always shave like you might cause damage, not like your mowing the front yard lawn. 7. THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT OVER SHAVING! Shaving too many times. This rule is hard to follow especially if you have to shave for your career but if you are prone to ingrowns, try shaving with an electric clipper. The results are not super close but no one but you will know the difference. Ladies, try waxing. 8. THOU SHALT NOT CLOG! Use of skin/pore clogging cremes or lotions. These keep hairs from growing up. After a shave, keep your skin bare; let the tiny army breath, and allow those newly shaved, really small, microscopic hairs to grow out just in time for the next shave. 9. KEEP THE SKIN FREE! Avoid tight fitting clothing around the Adam’s apple (neck) and/or below the waistline region. 10. REMEMBER TO EXFOLIATE! Not enough exfoliation to remove excess layers of skin. Use a skin care brush for razor bumps as directed. Brushes also tease the hairs away from entering the skin. Try a WIZKER brush today!
The Basic Wet Shaving Technique that he demonstrated WILL WORK for you but you don't have use the exact same products. Many of the products shown are relatively to EXTREMELY expensive(namely the The One Blade Razor) and you can achieve the same results with less expensive alternatives. The blades that must be used with the One Blade are proprietary. You can only use that one brand/type of blade and cost $30.00 a pack. One Blade recommends that you use each blade only once(although you can ignore) and that will add up to some serious additional charges over time. Please understand I am NOT saying that you should not use what he used only that you do not have to use then EXACT products. A word about the shaving brush. He used a "finest badger" brush. Badger hair brushes come in different grades a finest badger is the most expensive category whereas Best Badger is the least expensive. Shaving brushes also come in boar bristle, horse hair and synthetic and my opinion a beginner should use a brush that sufficiently firm without being too harsh(prickly) and those qualities can be found in the cheapest brushes. This said, if you want to opt for a finest badger hair brush try to get the best deal and avoid premium handles made of exotic materials and such since they only drive up the price and have nothing to do with shave quality. I will include some links to similar items that you can consider. The Razor( shown in the link is a DE(Double Edge) Safety Razor that is used exactly in the same manner as the One Blade except you will use your wrist to angle the head of the razor as opposed to the mechanism used On the One Blade). I own several DE razors and I have a Identical Clone to the model shown. It is a Twist to Open type and very good for a beginner. As a bonus this a kit with blades and a brush.. www.ebay.com/itm/ZEVA-2-Pcs-Men-Shaving-Kit-Beard-DE-Safety-Razor-GIFT-1351042015-WHITE/161847840456?_trksid=p2045573.c100506.m3226&_trkparms=aid%3D555014%26algo%3DPL.DEFAULT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D41451%26meid%3D39fa6dcbe6324ff3b6aee99e6f919e93%26pid%3D100506%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26 The Shave Cream/Foam/Soap Really, you can use the type sold in the aerosol can, I am not wet shaving elitist or snob. Alum www.ebay.com/itm/ALUM-BLOCK-STONE-100-GM-AFTER-SHAVE-ASTRINGENT-PREVENTS-BLEEDING-CUTS-ANTISEPTIC-/182036902378?hash=item2a623eb1ea:g:HxkAAOSwx-9W0Ob~ Styptic www.ebay.com/itm/No-Nix-Styptic-Pencil-King-Size-1-oz-/252186127259?hash=item3ab776eb9b:g:HBwAAOSwys5WVkY3 Witch Hazel, Shaving lotion or/and Shaving Balm can be bought over the counter virtually anywhere in the world. So not linking these items. The above are the bare minimum products you need to start wet shaving and reducing ingrown hairs and irritation. I did not include information on additional moisturiizers or serums. Good Luck.
the reality is that some men just should not shave with razors. these tips will help some but not all. you should give it a shot on a small portion of your face and see how it goes

Yes, apply cold water to your face in order to close your pores after shaving. After that I splash some inexpensive but extremely effective Witch Hazel on my face to prevent infections. This presentation is way too complicated and long. It's a shave not brain surgery! No matter, I still enjoy watching your videos because you normally get to the point quickly. In my opinion, writing out your thoughts in long hand in order to identify just a few of the aspects of shaving that has worked best for you would have made it a lot easier for me to follow your demonstration. After all, I really doubt any of your consistent followers are completely new to the shaving process. However, I am heartened that you continue to focus on the bain of every man of African Descent who has ever shaved, the dreaded Ingrown Hair! Last, where can I purchase the "Stick & Stone," device you used to exfoliate your beard area? I live in Houston, Texas, USA and I didn't find it anywhere online?
You would think so. But this is a a once per week or two. Otherwise, he does the quick shave without the full lineup. Besides, a blade is far smoother and easier to clean up after than my Andis T-Liner. Otherwise, you can go to the barbershop after.
"I don't have time for that" *Make Time* it's only a 8 minute process minus the exfoliation which is only 2-3 times a week and it separate from the shave anyway. You can exfoliate whenever you want. Shave after your morning shower you've already opened the pores by then eliminating the first step. 3 minutes total for lathering oil, soap, astringent/aftershave and moisturizer (the longest being the soap) and the actual shave shouldn't be longer than 5 minutes.

I really appreciate all you do and I hope this helps ;-)
No need to spend that kind of money on a razor, though I'm not knocking your choice! I see it has a head that moves much like the cartridge razors do. That movement is much more forgiving for a lack of technique which is essential when using a more standard double edged razor, so those that are new to this style of wet shaving, take time to get the angle that the blade is on your skin correct for the best trouble free and comfortable shave possible!!!

They are so inexpensive that I only use the blade once before throwing it away. The Shavette is easy to learn how to use if you take you time and shave in short stokes as you stretch the area of skin.
Where do we find the "stick and stone exfoliator tool"? No one has answered that question yet!!
You don't need that exact item. An exfoliating brush would work fine.

Or just use Andis T-outliners. Seems like a lot of work just to cut the hair on your face.
The year is 2021. How is it holding up now?
Great good principles do not die or fail you - form good habits and make them your principle
@larrythebarber Where can I get the Stick and Stone Exfoliator? Can you post a link to it please? Thanks.
sorry but I have had such horrific experiences so I am too afraid to do a wet shave ever again
khriseagle you have to do it right trial and error
khriseagle you quit too early.
And use a straight
all those products damn expensive
khriseagle Maybe try an against the grain shave after you've went with the grain. It'll make your face feel amazing
Get a Parker SRX straight razor. Go slow and you can be done with two passes. Geo Fatboy has good videos on how to use a shavette straight razor.
Are you in the UK? how did you get the Oneblade razor? I thought they are only available in the US. could you send me the link to the website
If your in UK you can get one from executiveshaveing.co.uk there are now to cheaper versions of this razor the core is about £70 made out of a Tritan Polymer and the oneblade hybrid which is made out of the Tritan Polymer and the stainless steel which will run you about £180
THE 10 COMMANDMENTS PREVENTING OF INGROWN HAIRS:
Love this. Great job
i want to believe this will work for me....i really do. can you please provide links to every single item you used?

The Shave Cream/Foam/Soap

Alum/Styptic Pencil/Witch Hazel
Post shave first aid and or irritation reducers & moisturization. Stypic Pencil not shown in the video is, my opinion best for cuts with bleeding, alum is good for milder nicks and general post shaving irritation. You need both products. Witch Hazel is also an antiseptic and moiturizing agent.

Larry where can I find products in this video
Where can I purchase the shaving blade ?
Once you get hang of the angle of safety razor....and direction of hair growth....u just need shaving cream and razor .....cold water is better for sensetive skin
Why is cold water better for sensitive skin
@@actorperfomance101 because cold water numbs up the skin surface.....blood doesnt rise up to skin surface ..... it works as a local anaesthetic on the skin.
£400 razor? Must be nice. My de razor cost $10.
Get a Parker Variant Adjustable Safety Razor. I use badger and synthetic shave brushes. Burke Avenue shave cream or Pacific Shaving Company shave cream. The regular not the version with caffeine. All can be found on Ebay or Amazon.
@@LutaLivre113 great razor 👍
One more question..after u finish shaving do u rinse your face in cold water before applying after shave and what lotion do u use?
Yes, apply cold water to your face in order to close your pores after shaving.
After that I splash some inexpensive but extremely effective Witch Hazel on my face to prevent infections. Once I allow that to air dry I apply some Nivea for Men Post Shave Balm for Sensitive Skin because it is very soothing and it smells Great!
By the way, I also use Non-Alcohol Nivea for Men Shaving Gel for Sensitive Skin. Last, the items mentioned can be found in any local Drug Store. Good Luck and enjoy the process ;-)
I have a curl hair and therefore believe in the razor bumps solution recommendations. My only issue is the whole process from preparation to moisturising takes too long and I cannot simply do this every 2 days which is the frequency for my shave.
any answers? i want that stick and stone tool also
you better make time lol
bro honestly, used trimmers to shave bro. You can buy yourself a sharp liners from the beauty supplies store and then mod the liners so that it can be sharp. It does the trick.. also if you want to get that baby smooth look in details get the dry shaver its the same product that barber used on people face. Quick and simple. Most black men cant even touch a razor because our hair get so curly and most guys how to trained their hair as well.

Mayne...ain't nobody got time for all that!!
exactly my thought.
You would think so. But this is a a once per week or two. Otherwise, he does the quick shave without the full lineup. Besides, a blade is far smoother and easier to clean up after than my Andis T-Liner. Otherwise, you can go to the barbershop after.
"I don't have time for that"
*Make Time*
it's only a 8 minute process minus the exfoliation which is only 2-3 times a week and it separate from the shave anyway.
Why not use a protective oil barrier before u put your shave cream on?
oil causes me to get bumps
@@larrythebarberman ok cool. I just got a kit and they said the oil is a protective barrier for the razor so I'll try it off and on to see what it does. Thanks man

I really appreciate all you do and I hope this helps ;-)
You are doing to many strokes. The key is to minimize the strokes. Preferably one stroke with the blade, not multiple strokes per area
Bruh! On GOD! THAT'S TOO MUCH! 😂
I feel your pain
no shaving sound ? bruh
i guess I'm fortunate...barbasol shave cream...straight razor...hot water...ten minutes im done!!!😊😊
Want a one blade razor that costs only a few pounds?, get a Gillette Guard from ebay.
