    As a previous consultant, consulting is the quintessential “fake it til you make it” career. Imagine someone telling you how to improve something that they’ve actually never done in their career and putting it in a pretty deck, that’s literally consulting.

    • @MissTXTee
      @MissTXTee 2 года назад +13

      I appreciate your honesty. As the client-facing change mgmt lead on many entetprise initiatives, I worked alongside consultant teams who were brought on to help augment my heavy workload. It was very frustrating to know the consultants made sooooo much money to simply build decks and delivetable "fluff", as I called it. I am highly detailed, so I would really sit and analyze the documentation that was submitted for review. It didn't hit the mark, in terms of having strong content for users to follow. It was slick looking, though!
      Funny enough, I've I had project leads from the consultant side approach me about coming on board, but I politely declined. Working like a Hebrew slave was not on my list of career goals! LOL

      A fresh set of eyes and experiences from all types of businesses is always better than than the two you have. If you’re seeking consultation, you’re out of ideas…that doesn’t take into account what type of background each consultant has…finance, accounting, marketing, etc.

    • @ohedd
      @ohedd Год назад

      Make no mistake, they know that you're faking it. They're hiring consultants so that they can offload responsibility/blame onto you whenever they have to justify a bad decision in front of their employers, shareholders or fellow executives.

    This doesn't really tell us what you DO though. I'm sure we all know consulting is busy and involves a lot of meetings/travel, but what generally is the nature of your meetings, engagements/projects, and deliverables? Seems hard to believe that consultants have profound insight or unique technical knowledge or skill to justify their (in many people's opinion) highly over-inflated compensation and billing rates. Especially since you're young (younger than me by a few years it seems) and recently out of college, I would like to know what kind of projects you are engaged by clients to work on, what kinds of problems they expect you to help them with, given that you haven't built much expertise in any particular area of knowledge. That's what I'm sure most of use "lay people" are truly curious about, but these kinds of videos seem to intentionally avoid addressing it.

    • @TheComplifused
      @TheComplifused 2 года назад +42

      Exactly my thoughts. I always see these videos by people who have come from a good uni straight into these jobs. What skills other than an extra fancy bit of paper do they actually bring? Especially as they have no actual work experience as such

      Consulting is a very broad term it can mean pretty much anything. I personally work in tech consulting within the cloud sector. Which basically means I help client's with their IT Infrastructure and Cloud projects. This could mean mean leading a team to build out some IT Infrastructure or helping a company with their strategy around this space. The typical roles would be, Project Management, Architects, Engineers, PMO, Business Analysts.

    This career is unstainable and toxic. I was an Accenture consultant. Culture of vanity and being popular and all about looking right, speaking the jargon, and endless fake happy hours and dinners. The travel gets old fast. I now have a great job, 9-5, compelling work, and go home after work to enjoy my family and hobbies.

    Hey! I really enjoyed this video and loved how you were genuine from the get go. You showing the realities of being a consultant without trying to impress your viewers definitely kept me wanting to know more from you! Maybe in a future video you could talk more about what you do and how you do it? Consulting looks interesting for me to pursue after undergrad, but I'd love to know what it means to be consultant; the challenges of the job itself and how you face them.
    Obviously, I wouldn't expect you to reveal confidential data of your clients, but I guess examples would help. Perhaps clips of you post-meeting, reflecting on the meeting itself ("this client approached me with xyz problem, so we probed more, it was confusing, so we talked to the team.." or so).
    I believe this would give viewers like me a better indicator of what consultants do. Anyways, thank you for the video, looking forward to more!

    Reality: It’s a shit.
    I worked 4 years as a financial consultant and I quit as soon as I’d saved up some money. You don’t have a life. I got up at 7 a.m and I was working until 8-9 p.m on a daily basis.
    It was strenuous and the salaries were not keeping up with the time I spent working. I mean, you’d better be willing to give your life for the company.
    Also, most of the companies are settled in NY and renting a place there is insane.
    The thing is if you are thinking of beginning your career in this area, think twice about it.
    It’s not what it seems, and nowadays, there are pretty good deals in more “relaxed” environments for entry-level employees.

    • @JohnWickPotter
      @JohnWickPotter 9 месяцев назад +1

      My personal take on becoming a consultant is as follows.
      I’m a consultant by the way so I hope I help you. If not please let me know where I was unclear & I’ll gladly clarify. To become a consultant …become intermediate level in a field or tool, I promise when you get to a point where you consider yourself being intermediate, that could equivalent to expert level for potential employers. Meaning your value goes up exponentially by knowing how to use a product, automate processes, being able to speak and teach on them, & continuous learning on said product. For me it was 14 years of experience with Sharepoint, specializing in a cornucopia of products within Microsoft Office Suite; which fall under the IT umbrella. Not just those but any fields that have consulting.
      Education is helpful, but not needed. I have a bachelors in psychology, associates in information management, so trust me education means squat. Bring something to the table that makes you the outlier as well. What’s your focus on whatever you specialize in. How can you use your skill set to help them. Also how have you used the skill set in the past to further prove your skills as well.

      I actually work as one - but in the pharmaceutical field. I mostly focus on early to late development, all pre-commercialization work. It's a lot less travel than most consultants, but when you do travel it tends to come in giant chunks at once. There was one client that I was flying to Kyoto (from NYC at the time) for 2 weeks on, and 2 weeks off. Shortly after that engagement though, I got my name listed on a bunch of high level papers (including some newspapers), and I started off working solo and haven't looked back since. Since the pandemic, I have travelled maybe a handful of times, and I work exclusively from my home office.

    Golden Question : How much time do you spend for RUclips ?
    Diamond Question : How much more can you improve your career if you stop shooting videos in awkward times and places and focus on your work ?
