Protective tarrifs protect the consumer from cheaper prices. Doesn't really sound American to me. I thought the 13 colonies were annoyed that they couldn't trade with other countries and could only trade with Britain.
My test on any grey area to determine if something is constitutional is: do ends justify means in ultimately supporting life, liberty, happiness, equal protections, balance, etc... The government should indeed have a wide verity of options available to regulate against any unfair practices so long as it doesn’t hinder the basic principles. Some instances may require temporary hardships and/or imbalance, however, it may be justifiable and necessary if the goal is to restore balance or broaden freedom.
When other countries have them and other trade barriers to our products into their countries the construction had better allow us to enforce a level playing field! Fair is only fair when equal footing is enforced!!!
Could you also use the “common defense” argument that a protective tariff is for the benefit of the common defense of the US, due to it protecting industry. If you use this argument you can bypass the “general welfare” debate?
If you wish to call them protective tariffs, what they are meant to protect is the federal government debt and are definitely for the wealth and welfare of the people! Why? Because a trade deficit of $500,billion dollars nullifies the $1 trillion dollars we borrow, in just two years. Thus, the borrowed money migrates to other countries before the government or the citizen can conduct commerce, which leads to 'quantitative' easing for ever. The tariffs are also to correct the trade imbalance in tarriffs. China charges the USA 25% and USA charges 0%. Definitely unfair marketing practice!
Protective tariffs should be construed as defense & general welfare. They are also the antithesis of the capitalists policies touted by politician in Washington.
Protective Tariffs cost the EU an estimated 43 billion Euros anually, the tariffs save around 200 000 jobs, meaning if we were to remove all tariffs in the EU we could pay every one of those 200 000 workers around 213 000 euros each...
