- The MK Party is continuing its campaign to have the May 29 elections declared invalid. The party has now turned to the Electoral Court seeking an order to declare the results invalid due to irregularities. The party led by former president Jacob Zuma claims that were it not for these irregularities, they would have likely won the elections. The party is demanding a rerun of the vote in the next few months. The Party won 58 seats in the National Assembly.
Dr Sithembile Mbete, from the Department of Political Sciences at the University of Pretoria provides an understand the numerical reasoning, but it seems to come down to an apparent discrepancy between votes counted and votes cast.

Thanks Doc for your explanation but this is just a smoke screen to fool people like, respectfully, yourself Doc. This is was always easy for us to see because the SA voters are not that many in the first place. The main issue that the MKP is fighting is the rigging that happened during the transfer or loading of votes from VD's to their system. We (MKP Members) believe that the system was partially frozen on the general public side while the IEC service providers were engineering the results to favour the envisaged coalition between the DA and the ANC (which is what we now really have). It should not be acceptable that these questions are not asked and we are bombarded with inflated numbers that don't even add up - the MKP is right to fight for people's rights. Even if we don't get the re-vote we'll have won by making a statement that such fraud is unacceptable. Respectfully, doc you've been duped, but then again you could just be looking after your financial self-interests.

If the change reflects the sum of National + Regional votes, why is it that the number of seats allocated on this change is equal to only the National votes?
No, the total seats have always included the total votes already
This is such a reasonable explanation. Parliament is made up of 400 seats. 200 of these seats in the national assembly came from regional ballots and the remaining 200 seats from the national ballot. So for example if ANC got 6 million votes on national ballot and 5 million on regional ballot, the total number of votes used to determine members of parliament is 11 million votes for ANC. Why is this so hard to understand ?

I hate DA because they want to sell us to the West, Israel etc. But the DA does the job at the regional level... so now IEC says I voted for DA to be my government nationally. I did not do that

I understand the reasoning for the numbers in terms of her explanation.
However, what I don't understand, is if the MK Party had an issue with the dashboard, why not request a recount as opposed to a revote? MK Party is questioning the electronic dashboard data capturing then the quickest, cheapest and easiest solution is to recount the hardcopy voting ballots...asking for a revote is obviously disingenuous and attempts to incite people who don't have the understanding of the process, average reasoning and basic maths skills.
As a patriotic South African, I'm not taking a dig at that section of the population because education is a major crisis in South Africa, and has been since Apartheid and during 30 years of democracy, including Zuma's reign as President. The debacles initiated by the MK Party, on an almost daily basis, during this election period just highlights that if we don't improve our education system by building more schools, employing more teachers and paying them well, and getting more kids in school; South Africans can easily be manipulated by sentiment and emotion vs logic, reasoning and understanding.

@@godfreybuthelezi2479 I think it's pretty obvious that MK Party is going to lose because for there to be a revote, given the cost to run that and the implications on all of the other Parties who are happy with the results, and I'm not even referring to the ANC, DA, EFF and IFP, the MK Party can't just show social media videos of alleged issues here and there, they'll have to prove that there was widespread, gross negligence on the part of the IEC in the running of the elections as a whole. They also have to prove that the MK Party would have won substantially more votes that would have resulted in more seats within the National Assembly.
The MK Party doesn't have that evidence otherwise they would have launched legal action a day or two after the elections. All they likely have are videos showing issues that also happened when Zuma won the election as President of the ANC, and all other parties accepted those results.
What the general public doesn't understand, and what Zuma is banking on because he wants to stir up emotion, is that the IEC doesn't promise and can't prevent any misconduct or issues during elections, but what they promise and are entrusted with is to ensure that on the whole there are no issues that materially affect the running and the outcome of the elections. That's the same policy of any organisation around the world running elections.
The MK Party is asking for a revote based on some areas that had issues, well that's normal for all 30 years of democratic elections and democratic elections around the world - the International Court will advise them of such. The IEC is arguing that even with those isolated cases, it wouldn't have made a significant or worthy difference to the results of the MK Party.
In effect, a revote will have the same result or maybe even weaken the MK Party's position, but it will cost the taxpayers millions of rands to run and cost the economy millions of rands of not trading on the day. It makes South Africa worse for it.
Not everyone sees or understands the bigger picture, which is exactly my point of informed voters vs voters who vote because they like a particular person and follow that person blindly

This is really just an example of how important UX and CX strategy and design are for web applications. This could have been avoided with thorough communication and carefully planned out phase planning of the results system. But this is how we learn, it’s never easy…
