So many things happen when I watch your videos. 1st - I learn things 2nd - stay inspired to keep getting better But then...I get hungry!! "Spicy corn salsa!!" You rock, brother!! 🤘😎🥁
Between you and Gabe at drumbeatsonline, I’ll never have to worry about new ways to manipulate a drum kit. Your lessons are easy to follow, fun to watch, and the stuff works. #legit
Doing it with that left hand lead, it's like a blushda without the small diddles the right hand does when goes back to the snare. Love everything you do with flams. Much love from Uruguay.
This was great. Did the first 2 beats with the left handed flam accents, 3rd and 4th beats with paradiddles ending on the and of 4 and put those paradiddle on the toms with the snare on 4. Just learning to use rudiments while working on them is inspiring because they aren’t just drills anymore. Thank you.
Amazing lesson as always. Such a proof of knowledge and understanding of so many stages a drummer can find themselves in. Delivered from one of the most humble humans I've come across. Honest and severely inspirational 🤗 Untouchable level for me. You make your stuff look so easy! Keep it up Mike!
This is fantastic Mike. I have been practising my Swiss Army triplets with the 3 different stickings and did not know how to use them around the kit. This was a fabulous lesson on how to. Thanks man, you Rock. This is very inspirational to me. Rock On Mike Johnston...................
Yeah man, permutations rocks! A simple pattern can become a hard stuff when you parmutate it. Still locking forward for a compilation of all your 5:41 stuff. Haha.
That was a cool lesson, your a great teacher and you seem to make me laugh and keep it interesting. The go deeper part is like Paul Harvey’s “ And that’s the rest of the story”! Oh, love the dog in the other videos!!!
Great stuff! I've been working on a fill quite similar to this. Starts on the e of 1. Then it's flam double stops on ft/snare and ft/open hi hat landing on 3 then finishing off with 4 & ah on the snare. Sounds great building out of a solo into a chorus.
Truth is you are just awesome. Keep the fireworks going. You're just awesome. But please show us how you tune your drums in the next lesson please? Your drums sound good maannnn
actually putting some names or mouthing when you are doing a new fills are very helpful. Just like what you're doing its like you're singing all the fills. it really works. As a beginner like me, it does works for me.
Mike love all your videos and teaching! I sometimes find myself liking the stuff in between just as much as the thing you are teaching... so if you can offer 1-2 of several of those variations as well I think it would really compliment the ideas. Just a thought. I have no right to offer it up but here it is anyhow. LOVE YOUR PLAYING!!!
Been playing drums for years. Never had lessons. Been improvising through every song in every gig. First drum lesson I have ever seen. Not sure what those terms you were throwing around were at first but caught on lol. Seems like I naturally picked up these techniques but I appreciate you're lesson plan and delivery. Will need to check out more lessons. I can hold the pocket well but looking to learn some new things that aren't complicated lol. Great job!
For anyone wondering what Mike does at 2:39, I transcribed it for you: Flibitty, flibitty, flibitty, flibitty, flibitty, flibitty, flibitty, flikiteh Ping... Kah... Ping... Kah... Shlipitty, shlapitty, shlupitty, shlipitteh, hippity, shubitty, shibitty, shugidu Ping. Bonus sauce: shigadaboop
Love how it starts on the "e" instead of the 1. Kind of like my marriage. We went through many cycles to get to the Downbeat of "1". Now we're making music, so to speak.
Loved how you turned that into a groove at the end! Quick question: how do you keep your drum heads so clean and free of any marks or scratches from your playing? They look like they are always brand new in your videos. I'm never able to keep mine so nice and clean for long after I buy new heads.
That was such a fun surprise! As far as my heads they are just as marked up as anyone else's, lol. The trick is that I have a light above the kit that shines directly down on them causing them to be a tad over-exposed, which makes them look super clean :) Mike J - www.mikeslessons.com
The spontaneous enthusiasm, clarity and lack of showboating is refreshing. Love the candle. Very new age.

Another great little lesson, I’ve been playing for over 33 years and I’m still learning so much. Mike , you inspire me to keep learning. Job done ! 🤘🙂
Love the freedom of drumming you demonstrate through the 180 you made halfway through the video!
Your lessons are outstanding, and I like how you don't lure people to a paid website to get the whole thing. Excellent.
I love to have teacher like him! The way he express his feeling of groove literally give me excitement..
I like the way you teach. U give your students hope and assurance that we can do it. Love your work.
Amazed at your ability to keep time on the hats on the upbeat, it's a real jazzy thing to do
My favorite drumming channel I've seen by far. Very helpful, and I appreciate the focus on rudiments and technique as well.
There literally needs to be a shirt with "skudaboop" on it!
yes ! there does
figuratively speaking.
So many things happen when I watch your videos. 1st - I learn things

woot woot, the dirk blast rudiment
Great lesson. Love your energy and passion. What metronome app are you using?
Nice one,Mike! Could you break down some these gospel chops? I’m in the dark on that style...
Great again
Hahah I did hear that cowbell and felt that thing right in the boogie
Nice. I like this.
playing the rudiment on the up beat , use linear drumming and loop play one side of the rudiment. thanks, it was a good lesson.
Now I'm craving some "spicy corn salsa"!
Awesome

Some cymbals make the tip of the sticks dirty, and that dirt often ends up on the heads. Especially white heads.
Some cymbals don't make sticks dirty.
