I guess you lack the knowledge or ignore the stars, horses, are abused. Enter a world to be isolated, shipped to many different owners, drugged, run injured and then probably slaughtered. Yeah the sport of kings....
Shane sellers you are one of my favorite 5 jockeys of all time I remember you at fairmount park as a kid arlington hawthorne . They mention guidry , day , borel stevens and i still mention you
As a friend of the late cinematographer Joe Burnham I want to congratulate the people who put this video together. I'm certain, if Joe were still with us he would nod his head in approval. It is well done and I had a hand in doing a lot of radio and television productions of my own.
When I was young,I always wanted to be a jockey...but I guess it wasn't in the cards for me then...I'm a middle aged 200 lb man now in my 50s...but even today I still dream and imagine myself in top of the most beautiful animal in the world and racing in the wind....well,a boy can still dream....I admire every thing these guys and gals do as jockeys... because the sport is powerful and so are they.
This shit is crazy because these jocks have no fat to lose. I feel really badly because of what these honest men have to go through to perform their jobs.
Randy Paul Romero (born December, 22 1957 in Erath, Louisiana, United States) won 4,285 races from 1975 to 1999 when he retired from horse races. He was deservedly inducted to National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame on May 27, 2010. Congratulations, Randy! Greetings from Venezuela.
High respect for these athletes. The injured jockeys can become breeze riders, many of my friends who don't make it big for races in Arlington are warm up riders, especially the injured ones. some even turned to becoming catch riders!
Ironic finding this because Chris told me 3 months before my accident to take all my concussions seriously at Remington and in Feb 2018 after a facial fracture and concussion had to ride one more lost the horse and she went over the rail now disabled with cervical spine and brain injury
"It was the saddest day in the history of the Breeder's Cup" Pat Day (1953 - ) Talking about Go for Wand's tragic death in 1990 Breeder's Cup Distaff (14:32 to 17:50)
For every male or female jockey around the world, next race can be the last one. And like Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith said once: "If you don´t win, you´re not paid" Greetings from Venezuela.
Jockeys are courageous, disciplined, brave, they fight the scales to stay under 120 lbs and most Americans gorge at buffets and eat fast food and are not disciplined and are out of shape and are in bad health. Bulimia and anorexia is not the answer. Racing needs to raise the scale of weights to 130 lbs. Look how much the steeplechasers carry from 140 to 170 lbs and run 2 mile races over hedges.
i know one of the secrets for some riders... the love of the horse an when disaters strikes its a loss of a best friend a team player ... a relative ur baby ur warrior i lsted 4 years i the training barns had an offer 4 steaple chase jock....a "leg up to flat raceing ...i didn ttake it several reasons one being Sham L son of Sham i called him "Shamu after the "Sea world whale Sham L was big & prolly a lil on the fat side he was what the "old timers refered to as a "Daisy cutter ...he arely broke a knee when galloping an running he saved every ounce of energy 4 the competion...he did like propping and wheeling an that was only because he liked his riders awake... he like m&m.s a coula before his exercise galloping on the track or a trail ride...his work times were fast...he became cast in his stall during lunch time an cracked his pelvis ...the other two colts an filly went on to the track to break there maidens...he stayed behind an was an insureance claim ...
Go back to school or become a trainor or an agent bro life isnt over its just you have to start a new chapter in your life you can still be in the game just not as a jockey represent horse racing in a different capacity i know your having trouble holding your weight but theres other things for you to do in the sport of kings dont give up bro stay in the game do commentary for tvg or xpressbet or drf im sure youll get a job somewhere bro think of those kids and your beautiful wife you need to go on for them
@SportofKingsTV Who shot this documentary?? Whoever put this together did a great job!! I would really appreciate it if you could send me an email or contact # My father is a Jockey and I have an incredible story that I would love to share with you guys
John Francome Former champion jumps jockey - I don't have a problem with the weights going up, but to argue that they need to go up to protect the health of jockeys is nonsense. It doesn't matter what the weight minimums are; there will always be a minority who put their health at risk to make the weight - it will just be larger lads doing the same things that smaller lads do today. It wouldnt matter if they moved it to 300! It just means guys who weigh 320 will purge to make weight.
I respect immensely the level and dedication to which a jockey will go to, however it feels as if life is all about the level of eating disorders previlant within the sport.life is very sad and mundane and I do not wish to be disrespecful but I do not understand why they have chosen this sport? What is the real pay off here? The chase to win the race or the eating disordered behaviour?
Raven omg didnt know that and watch races for yrs Feeling embarrassed I've seen some very thin skinny flat jockey and one jump too Small ones r better off But for very tall ones Well I feel sad for them It's all about passion for me Contradictory to woman who says that's the only thing they gain I think they r willing to win at high cost yes But you can't say they r looking for an eating disorder People also have to understand the psychology behind I think they r victims in certain ways But that's their choice also
I respect Sellers and all, great jock but he's CLUELESS when he says WITHOUT Jockeys they'd be no horse racing. Simple fact, without owners and bettors there's no horse racing. I'm sure there's 10's of 1,000's of people "south of the boarder" that would ride 10 horses on a card for 50 bucks. Too many of these guys are prima donna's just out for the "buck" and "glory"
Gary Jaeckel Sellers does raise a good point though because just your average rider at average weight and size would make it difficult for a horse to maintain the speed needed to win. More weight=more work for the horse, more wear and tear on muscles and ligaments, and naturally less speed.
Lovely Video! Forgive me for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you heard the talk about - Riddleagan Profit Key Remedy (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a good one off product for learning how to bet on horses without the hard work. Ive heard some awesome things about it and my best friend Jordan at last got great success with it.
sal k the jockeys who dont get the inside jobs are bigger mugs than the punters imo. They only get the complete no hopers which only gives them the riding fee of about £50, these same no hopers are then lowered in class and handicap mark (uk) and a top in house jockey jumps back on board and gets the riding fee + the £1000 fee for winning,, its the mug jockeys doing all the hard work getting its mark down etc,, only for a in the club boy to reap the rewards along with the trainer/owner. A sad society sadly, the majority are taken for cunts. Its like in all parts of society.
Thank you for showing the good, the bad and the ugly of horse racing. There needs to be reform around racing these horses too early as well.
Thanks for posting this, I've been trying to find this documentary for years!
Jockeys are one of the most powerful athletes in the world... Horse racing is a great sport...the 'Sport of Kings'... always remember that.🏇

Sweet Jesus I bet EVERYBODY who saw that horse's leg flailing as she tried to run on the track CRIED.
thank you very much! :) this is the best jockey documentary I have ever seen.
glad to say that chris got to ride in the derby like he dreamed of doing one day

I remember Go for Wand going down and the horrible photos in Sports Illustrated. I stopped watching racing for ten years because of that race.

This was an HBO documentary back in the 90's. I recorded it on video.
Back in 2004
This whole thing, makes me proud to be an equestrian.
That horse with the FLOPPING LEG should have been in the last race in America!
,
i always use to bet shane sellers , jerry bailey , or pat day when i was younger those were my favorite jocks

***** its almost like they are living as women do.
Seleste Morgan money lol. Its a sad way to live but thats what some people do to earn a few dollars/quid sadly.
damm!!,what terrible accident but i know is part of the show.
their courage against yours?
I will be a jockey!! :D
My thoughts also
They need to carry more Weight
Ragin Cagins...bad to the bone!~
What on earth was the point of showing the guy naked in the shower?
I got a semi while Rosier was in the shower.
+MrsMacTickle : Being a female, I am not complaining! All kidding aside, maybe it's to symbolize how "naked," alone, and vulnerable he is?
MrsMacTickle it was to show how thin they have to be and how emaciated their bodies are from the different methods used to make weight.
Tandy Lindsay yes, my friends who are jockeys have been in hospitals for anorexia.
