When staying at an RV park for a few weeks ask about the monthly rates. It might be less than a 2 week stay. Where I'm at if you paid daily rates a two week stay is $650, but the monthly rate is $500.

I've had 2 RVs that had false bottoms in the seats of the dining chairs. The bottoms had latches to open them. I found them by accident when I tipped a chair over and low and behold, there was a secret compartment! Then, of course, I had to turn all the chairs over and found they were all made that way. It was really cool and quite secret.

My fridge was original to the rv (78 Hitchhiker) and it died this summer finally. I bought a regular mini-fridge and put it where the old oven (also non-working) had been. Insulated and sealed that wall and helped cool off the living area a lot.

So excited that I found you. Sometimes the rv length restrictions isn't for the rv site, it's sometimes for the size of the campground itself and the roads. Where a 26' travel trailer will be able to negotiate the turns in the campground just fine a 30'+ 5th wheel won't be able too. So yes, you can sometimes fit into a site that is listed for smaller rv length but negotiating the turns and the roads in the campground could become a problem.

5:00-ish mark. If your power pedistal has only 50/30amp plugs and your on a 50a, Walmart sells a cheap 30a to 15a adapter that you can use. If your pedistal doesn't provide the third 15a outlet.

I wonder if they make the fridges better now. I have a 2017 Norcold LP/AC fridge and we never had any issues. We live full time and do some boondocking and have even been in Arizona in 109 degrees with no shade or breeze. And I am one who is constantly opening the fridge for cold water drinks. No issues.

Regarding the fan at the rear/outside of the fridge. Better to mount a 12v computer power supply fan inside the cover, powered off the 12v supply to the fridge. That way it runs continuously and silently when the fridge is on and you don't have to leave the cover off

  • @dalehuitt
    @dalehuitt 5 лет назад +33

I had a similar issue with my Dometic frig not cooling efficiently. I always used a battery operated small fan to circulate air inside. But outside was a different story. I hardwired in a 12v high volume fan and mounted it on the wall pointing up with the air flow. I also connected the hot lead to a temperature switch. So when the ambient air temp gets between 85 and 90 degrees, the fan turns on. This pulls in air from the outside and moves it upwards across the back of the frig dramatically helping to cool the frig. Bonus is you don't have to take the cover off and it is always there. You can find 12v fans on Amazon from around $10. Even the PC type fans work really well to move air.

Great tip. Just be sure it doesn't blow near the pilot for gas mode. If the power drops out most units will switch to gas automatically.
You can plug a standard 120 volt fan in behind the fridge too. This would eliminate any issues with air flow in the capartment in gas mode. Finding a small 120vt fan is much more difficult though.( cant win for losing)
Thanks for the great tip, it keep everyone thinking

Fridge: When you open the right door, on the left door you will see a long black vertical plastic piece. Start getting in the habit of closing the left door first, make sure that plastic piece is pulled toward you completely to seal the opening. Then close the right door. Put oft reached for items on the right side just to make door closing easier.

First thing I did when I bought my first RV was to see what all I was getting. The oven and frig info was great. But I did separate my storage space under my bed, into three. Its also the spot where it leads outside. To the side walls. 2x4 and 1/4 plywood works great.

Thanks for the Freg cooling. For you who don't care for the water and tv connectors, I put a brass 45 on my camper water connector and then put a male brass quick connector on that. The female brass connector I attached to my main water hose with the brass pressure regulator on the other end. Just a snap to connect water.
I also put quick connects on my cable line so no scraps when attaching that.
I bought the brass connectors from ACE and the cable ends from Walmart.
Has made the last 15 years of camping easier.

You do know that they make a 12 volt fan just for your fridge. It will run on 2 D batteries for around a month before you need to replace them. Another tip is park your RV so the fridge will be on the opposite side of the afternoon sun if at all possible. Another one is the fan on the outside their is an electrical outlet usually on the left hand side of you fridge that you could plug the fan into and keep the cover on...

    • @7blueblaze
      @7blueblaze 5 лет назад +1

yes and that air gap for the cord going into the refrig, is a refrigerator gasket leak just waiting to happen, creating an entirely new problem.
Battery operated - seems like it would be the way to go, with rechargeable batteries.

Regarding the refrigerator, the coils that help in cooling (between the bottom and top exterior access panels) get dusty and that can restrict the heat exchange required to cool the fridge. If you can get a duster or vacuum in there to clean those coils (turn the gas off first) that might make a huge difference in your refrigerator's ability to cool off.
Regarding the ovens. I would be tempted to have the oven removed and leave just the cook top, then just make another cupboard where the oven was. To me the oven in most RV's is just wasted space. Especially if you have a convection microwave.

Hello, The fan idea is a very good idea, and also removing the panel. My husband did this to our rig and also worked out good for us. One: He painted the whole panel off white thus reducing heat up of the panel and raising the temperature in that exposed area workings of the fridge. We too also leave a gap from the wall and the food storage to help circulation especially the back wall so the cold will naturally flow off of those cold medal things and head downwards thus allowing the warmer air to go up and over those medal things and back down. Going to watch the rest of the video and am sure i'll glean some more helpful hints I'am sure.. We call storage under the bed our Costco Warehouse when we buy stuff in bulk, it goes there. Our son just bought a travel trailer and i'll let him know about the storage under couch and behind the TV. Since we are definitely OVER 55, we don't have a problem passing for Senior Citizens. But our MH is 17 years old and really still looks great, only had one time we were called on it but they let us come in anyway. Love browsing the camping/RV sites, but seems i've signed up for too many lately, but will visit your channel often to see what cookin'. Very nice video. Thanks for sharing your tips. Painting that panel and surrounding frame off white works pretty good too. Regards, ~ Karen P.S. Forgot, going to get a pizza stone for the MH over, thanks for reminding me.

If you're running a skoolie (homemade RV), you might look at a "super fridge". It's a chest freezer with a home brewers thermostat. Way cheaper to purchase (couple hundred dollars), and maybe 10% the energy usage. Basic physics. There are a couple of videos on YT about how to live with one off grid. This won't work for people that have to have a "normal" kitchen setup, but I don't think too many of those people are living in RVs.

Putting that fan inside the frigerator how does the seal close properly around the electrical cord going to the fan? Is there any risk of cold air leaking out of that spot where the court is sitting? Since the seal isn't allowed to seat properly flush

Hi One more frig hack. Slide has to vents for your frig. Mount 2 fans at the top vent and they will suck the air out from the fins. They are the things that cool your frig. The hotter they are the warmer the frig is. Another ideal is you can get rv fans to mount to the fins on the inside of your frig. you won't need to defrost frig and they will run off your 12 volt power supply. both mods will keep your frig down to 34 to 38 degrees even when temperatures are very hot. Keep up with the good videos

I use a rectangular pizza stone. It's a bit bit then the burner. It actually creates a more even heat than the big round one because it's focusing on the burner. That also helps pre heat the oven faster than the big round one. My oven cooks perfectly now.

If you can make the room in the fridge, you could take a 2 liter or a couple of 20 oz. bottles, fill them with water and freeze them. Then keep them in the fridge for a day, then refreeze. I do this at home, cause the fridge and freezer don't seem to run as often and I save on the electric bill. But in an RV, maybe it could help keep things cold and the fridge won't have to work as much. 😊

Another tip on the refrigerator is to try and shade the fridge vent area. The sun beating directly on that area will not allow it to cool much. If you get a fan that can sit and blow upward then you will get great air movement in from the bottom and blown right out the top.

Another RV refrigerator hack I've yet to see mentioned, I freeze as much of my meat as possible then a day or two before I'm going barbecue or cook them, I take out a steak or hamburger and put it in the refrigerator to help the refrigerator cool better as it thaws. I also have several ice packs approximately 5 by 5 by 2 in. thick that I freeze during the night and put into the refrigerator during the day to help the refrigerator as I do a lot of dry camping.

I use it on my 1979 trailer. You gotta keep the coils cool. Your reefer is in a slide out....hence the worst place for a refer. Many many refers in rvs in a slide have had issues with not cooling
Enough. The problem is no roof vent.
Your best bet is get a couple computer fans and mount them on the back of the refer. Put 3 fans on the top vent and have them suck the air out of the compartment. Have 2 fans blowing into the compartment on the bottom.

Hey guys I saw you do the refrigerator thing and what I did to my 1980 Winnebago as I have a dometic refrigerator a 7 cubic foot and it is over 10 years old and I got it to -6 degrees in the freezer and and the refrigerator at 34 degrees because of what I did on the outside walls was I used 1 inch sheets a phone and put it on both sides of the fridge on the outside in the cabinets put the foam board in on the inside towards the fridge and it never really got hot and yes I do have fans, and if you take the outside cover and real small holes in the vents and on the inside of it put a bug screen in it, and blew it out every now and again, and let me know if you got this okay have fun travels don't forget to wash your hands.

Fridge fans, I would look for a 12VDC fan that is purpose built, i.e. a computer fan etc. Leave the out side cover on, that helps direct the air through the space. This is where a thermal camera is great, now around $200. See what works adjust as needed.

They weren't secret to me. When you understand how RV refrigerators work you know why they have issues in warmer weather. They make fans for the vent covers. Several people install fans below or above them to help disperse heat. Most 55+ parks adhere to the rule because not doing so will hurt their business core, senior snowbirds. Some I know allow "off-peak" use to under 55.

These are great ideas and tips. I had a thought about adding a piano hinge to the top of your fridge cover so you can open it up without removing it. Since it is hinged at the top, it will also act to keep the fridge workings shaded and somewhat protected from rain. You can add a fold down brace to the bottom to hold it open.

How are you getting the aerial footage of you driving down the road? Does your drone have a follow feature?

  • @opaandomascampingadventures

Yes-we were aware of those tips. Going back to your fridge. Do you have the cooling fans built in for the outside fins? The biggest problem with that arrangement is if they have a diverter to direct the air THROUGH the fins. Another fine video. Thanks for sharing.

From SURPRISE, AZ - I wonder if they make an aftermarket screened refrigerator panel to put on while you’re camping? That would solve the “ugly” problem and resolve the airflow issue. Might even be easy to make. Great tips.

We keep a small basket in the fridge with mayo, mustard, cold cuts, pickles, cheese, in it, so I can just grab it to make sandwiches without keeping the fridge open very long to get everything I need out. I found that one of my cookie sheets ( I was about to put it in our estate sale when we sold all our stuff) fit exactly on the floor of my oven without covering the vents. It is the double metal sheet with about 1/4 inch of air in the middle. I bake loaves of bread without difficulty, which can be a real challenge. The cookie sheets are much cheaper than a stone, and you don't have to worry about breaking it. Also convenient if you actually make cookies.

One thing you could do to the tv mount if you are proficient with welding is get a full motion tv mount and make yourself a custom mount bracket. It’ll allow you to pull your tv away about 18 inches and it’s easier to access the luggage behind it. Just don’t forget to put the strap on it before heading down the road!

Walmart sells an awesome square pizza stone that just fits inside the oven , we did this little trick too, to be able to use the oven and not get the burnt strip. Some round ones need to be trimmed, but check out Walmart's website and get your inside dimensions .

I knew ALL those "secrets", in fact our sales rep explained them all to us. Additionally alway keep the black water drain closed because the "debris" may accumulate in a pile and will be a problem to remove. Pour your dishwashing water down the toilet, the black water tank fills slower because most water goes to the gray water, and the soap helps to clean the tank. If you keep your septic hose in the rear square bumper, drill a hole through the bumper and the covers so you can "pin" them in place with a long slender rod through both holes. Your covers will alway stay on while traveling and it keep the hose secure. BTW your regular hose AND your extension hose both may compress to fit in the bumper. The refrigerator fan I also knew but not the access panel. Thanks for that one.

Rubber roof UV protectant is also good for tires. Efferdent denture cleansing tablets (2 -3 tablets) takes holding tank smell go away. Hot water and a bottle of dish washing detergent in two days of soaking cleanses false holding tank sensors. Archoil fuel treatment not can bring back the combustibility of old gasoline, but also preserves it. Opening propane tanks very slowly (first 1/2 turn to open) will make your switch over regulator last a very long time. Turning off all electrical circuit breakers before starting your generator will make all voltage regulators in all electrical appliances last forever.

Some people will hardware in a couple 12v Computer Fans in that outside area to help circulation. If your handy, cut out the plastic larger, epoxy a fan (or fans) mount to make more permanent. And wrap some screen on the plastic door and epoxy that on the edges.
Hint, one fan blowing IN and one blowing OUT works best.
Be nice if the aftermarket would come up with a professional solution

  • @notanomad9320
    @notanomad9320 5 лет назад

I've used 12 volt computer fans both internally inside the fridge and on the outside right behind the cover, I have a small switch I can turn on or off. You have 12 volts coming right into the dc heating element you can tap into. I have a cheap wireless thermometer on my dash. Propane refrigerators work well when you have limited solar. Oh one other tip, do not open the door any longer then needed, find containers that are perforated for air flow and pull out categories of food needed and then shut the door right away. Good luck!

Many years ago I purchased a large meat order that filled my fridge and freezer. I noticed the next day and many days afterward that my fridge hardly ever turned on. When the meat quantity reduced to the point that the fridge started operating more often again I began keeping the empty areas filled with gallon jugs of water and once again the fridge operated probably 1/4 of the time it normally had for years. The cold or frozen mass holds the temperature down. It's a worthwhile trick.

I'm moving to Florida in my camper that I'm currently doing renovations on within the next 2 months if we can get rid of this Corona! Hope you guys are doing well.
My daughter lives there with her mom now in Port St Lucie. There's a lot of places around there but I've never been to any of the places.
Where would you guys recommend? I'm a 34yo veteran but I don't drink or party. Very laid back respectful veteran who's only concern is to be a good dad. Would really love to find a place or several places to live full time/circulate the places. Whatever is possible lol. I'm new to this!

I have a 2012 Keystone Cougar and have never had a problem with fridge, it is very cold. I would question the dealer. You should not have to do all that to keep it cool. Also, doesn't your couch have a storage drawer under the cushions? You should be able to pull the front section of the couch out like a drawer.

Great tips as always 😊Just a safety tip though, I saw on someone else's video to never store anything on the very bottom of the oven, bc the propane wires are there. And while in transit whatever is being stored there could knock those wires lose and cause a propane leak!😨😨😨 So just be careful ❤

Knocking a wire loose can not create a propne leak. Worse case scenario is the oven's electronic igniter will not spark.

    • @rachaeldavis3825

It would be cool to have the projection feature on an iPhone. We have two white noise/clock/alarm/thermometer/radio units that project the time and room temperature into the wall or ceiling. Got them at Kohl’s but I think Walmart May have them as well. Brand is Homedics. The projection is optional so you can turn it off it it bothers you. I like the tiny bit of light so I don’t stub my toe or trip over our Schipperke (she is black) on the way to the bathroom, lol 😆

There are kits that you can use or like I did make sure at the top vent the spacing is correct it should be really close to the fence with in a half inch and make sure that it has an even flow for the air to flow out over and out of top van are used metal tape for ducting to kind of control the direction the air flows up through that area keeping it close to the fence and piping and I’m going to be adding another little fan inside The ducting of the refrigerator. Also make sure there’s proper insulation all the way around the refrigerator so that the heat doesn’t transfer into your trailer I also wire tied the drain tube to create a P trap so the water will hold in the tube and no warm air will go up into your refrigerator
