I love Brahms with no comparing , of course I love Scriabin, Mahler,Beethoven,Prokofiev, Villa Lobos, but each one have his unique place and Brahms is just in place of elegance, the beauty of harmony combinations, when you listen Brahms you feel how original he is, he sounds diferent ,
I'm actually really glad people have expressed their change in opinion re: Brahms. I still struggle with him. I'm currently learning some of Op.118, and I'm trusting the process - there's certainly a physicality to his music that feels very natural to play at the piano - but my biased ears do not enjoy much beauty out of his harmonic language. It's something about the close voicing of harmony. In the case of Chopin, his harmonic language is very congruent with the shape of the overtone series. Brahms seems to push chordal harmony (in first and second inversions too) closer to the 'base'/bass of the music (as oppose to octaves, 7ths, and 5ths), and I think that's my issue. My ears are spoilt brats that binge on harmonic sugar... Brahms' earthy umami pallette is too savoury for my sensibilities HAHAH. Alas, I do want to be purswaded otherwise, over time.
n so some years ago I asked Carla Bley and Steve Swallow what they practiced, “Brahms”, so you see they have their finger on the pulse, if you can practice it you can play it just like he preached. [:] 0
If you have to name the greatest five composers one is necessarily Brahms. If the three first spots are already taken by Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, I leave up to you to choose Brahms' companion. Händel? Haydn? It is laughable what that Britten guy said about God Brahms. All Britten's output is not comparable with the lesser work by Barber. Go a see what Barber said about God Brahms.
Brahms is a musician’s composer. His music is so interesting
Vivat and Cheers for Herr J. Brahms !
This is fantastic. Thank you so much. I really enjoyed everyone's comments--footnote, I believe it's spelled Rob Cowan.

#5 is Berlioz, probably the most original composer.
