These tips will truly make developing your tree much easier and I have used unlink a relative more times than I care to admit. But the right ancestor line is the only thing that matters. Thanks again Connie.
I have often added a duplicate person when attaching a marriage record -- mainly because I put too much trust in the Ancestry program matching it to the existing spouse. ('It's obviously the same person!' I say to the screen...) It's easy enough to go back and remove the person if I catch it immediately, but I have had experience merging duplicates, too. I try to be especially aware of the "Not a New Person?" warning when adding marriage records.
I had no idea that one of those choices was open in a new tab! ❤️ I always have lots of tabs open. ----- TIP: get a real mouse (usb or Bluetooth) so you can right-click easy the same way on ANY type of computer, Mac or PC. It will force you to sit properly at a real desk/table, too. ☺️. I like a simple USB $10 Logitech type mouse.
I found merging duplicates, each with parents and lots of children actually caused more duplicates to be created, because it looks like the appended the kids, instead of merging? Maybe you can make a short video how to merge 2 people each with all the kids / parents / siblings
There is a need for fixing errors that have crept into ancestry trees. Too many users just copy from other trees without going back to primary sources. I have ancestors where I know for sure their identities but errors in Ancestry have found their way into Wikipedia!!
I don't use ANY submissions by others on my family trees, I've seen more than once 2 seperate families merged, some folks will fill in ANY blank just to fill one in from ANY source
I have been working on one of my grandfather's brothers. The name is John M. Clark, I realize I had the wrong John M Clark in my tree and have located the correct one. How do I remove the incorrect information that is linked to the profile?
I am not quite clear. When detaching and attaching a person, does all his descendants go with him? Do I detach from the mother at the same time? When I attach to a new father do I attach new mother at the same time?
This is hard to answer here without seeing exactly what you are talking about. When you go into Edit>Edit Relationships... anyone still attached (say it's children) then anyone attached to them... would still be part of the branch (say if the children had their own children). For example, Bob has a wife Margaret and three children, Sue, Danny, and Marc. If you detach the wife Margaret, but don't detach the children, then the children and anyone they are attached to (i.e., their children or spouses) will still be part of that branch. If you want to totally disconnect a person to make them as a "floater" in the tree, remove all relationships.
I did a search on your page to "fix errors" and hoped this would save me. Sadly it didn't. I have an issue I don't know the "right" way to fix. I have a man that married an Elizabeth. She died 1884. I didn't know that at first. in the 1900 census she appears. I added the information as I believed all was well. Later in my research I find out she died in 1884, and the man re-married another Elizabeth in 1885. Which was why the Elizabeth showed in 1870 and 1880 and then again 1900. So my question is, I click on the 1900 census, and it shows the lines to the dependents to that census, pointing to the now wrong Elizabeth. I'm not sure how to re-do that and adjust the fact to be the right person so the lines line up to the right people. Do I delete the 1900 census and attempt to re-find it and redo it? I've not had to fix an error like this. And surprisingly, the new error checking in Ancestry found this mistake for me. So now I am fixing the error.
Oh and it gets even better, they were BOTH Elizabeth Smith's. Two different Elizabeth Smith's. That is sooo crazy for the 1800's. Smith is popular, that is true. But to marry two different ones is unbelievable and extremely hard to follow 150 years later lol.
There are two things I think you are talking about here... 1) Two people who are connected that should not be and 2) a record connected to a person that should not be. Here is a video about fixing the people connected incorrectly ruclips.net/video/GVvmoOoLR4w/видео.html and or this video might help ruclips.net/video/aLqzsRuc0jw/видео.html as for #2 Copy the URL for the 1900 census on a document temporarily and then remove it and then attach the URL to the right person again.
Hi Connie, this is very informative. I can't find my mistake that prevents my seeing one of my trees in "family view." "This usually occurs when people in a tree are listed as marrying people to whom they’re related," according to Ancestry. I've tried looking for my error in "pedigree view," but can't find it. Ancestry wasn't helpful. Any ideas on how to find my error? Thanks. Gilbert
That's a tough one. If you know who you suspect is the problem in your tree, try searching that name in the tree to see if there are duplicates. Also try searching (in the upper right box in the tree view "Tree Search") for just the surname to see all the people by that name. You might find something that jumps out at you... then look at their profile and tree and see if it looks right. I wish I could help, but without seeing your tree, I'm not sure I can help. You might try my coaching service. Here are the options... more information. genealogytv.org/coaching-options/
I have an issue with my tree, why does it say that I am my great grandmother and that on there I’m my grandchild 🥲 it’s so confusing idk how that happened. Help?
I'm wondering if you are listed in the tree twice. Try going to the tree view, hit search in the upper right corner and search for yourself and see if there are more than one of you listed.
From memory, as I’m not at my computer right now. Go to trees then drop down to manage trees, choose the tree, scroll down, on the right side choose delete. This can’t be undone. Call Ancestry support if you need help.
What if Exem is the grandfather and you forgot the father and you want to move everyone else down the line and pop in only one person without having the rest of the line dissapear?
@@GenealogyTV I guess I wrote you the wrong question. What I meant is what if you originally put Exem as the father but found out he was the grandfather and you have someone to put in as the father, but there is a huge line after that. How can you move everyone down one generation easily without having to do it all over again?
If he is still in the system you can attach him back from the profile page of a relative. Just click on Add Family in the lower right corner of a profile and choose the correct relationship. Then in the upper left corner "Choose someone from your tree" and start typing the name until you find the correct person in the list. Then save. If you totally deleted the person you will need to add them back as if they were new.
Be aware of other unrelated people putting incorrect information on your family tree. Since the DNA has added hundreds to your genetic trail, the odds have increased that a creative amateur is giving you relatives you never had.
Hi... I just checked and there is audio on this video. First check another video to see if you can hear it. If not, you likely have a setting on your computer that is muted or turned down. Also make sure you have not accidentally unplugged the speakers. I have a cat that did that for me one day. LOL I hope you can figure it out.
Like to check the veracity of everybody on my ancestry tree but when you’re up to 75,000 people it’s nearly impossible. I wish ancestry had an app that can show discrepancies like people being born after both parents have died, in accurate marriage and death dates, improbable siblings, there is enough technology in the world where that could be done
Michael, most genealogical software has a tool that will go through your database and tell you if there is a problem. I use Ancestral Quest and it is in the reports sections.
Claire V Brisson-Banks I just want a software that will sync with Ancestry and take the photos that I have on Ancestry and put them onto the genealogical database. I know of a few but I wanna know the best one
I use Family Tree Maker. Keep in mind that if on Ancestry there is a difference between records you uploaded to it and records that are attached to an ancestor. Take the census for example: If you attached a census record to an ancestor, the actual image will not sync to your software at home, but the pointer to it will. On the other hand, if you had downloaded an image of the census page and then uploaded it again to your ancestor (on Ancestry) that image would sync with your home software (like FTM). Having said that, you really don't want to do the latter because it will fill up your computer space and Ancestry's as well with duplicate images. Let the systems work for you. There are a couple software programs that sync with Ancestry.
I don't think you can when you delete a person. It is permanent. You'll have to add her manually. You might be able to call Ancestry and ask them to revert your tree to an earlier time. I think they can do that.

Check all spellings... or perhaps you have already merged that person.
