    The woman at the end was so rude lol. She is an olympic athlete. The last thing she does in her life is give up. She was talking about Simone, who is one of the best athletes the planet has ever seen. It's perfectly okay (and healthy) to acknowledge and accept that you can't be the best in the world. Not to accept failure, but to accept yourself.

      The thing is Aly has been coming to the end of her career for a minute now. Simone is younger, stronger, and by all accounts the best female gymnast the world has ever seen. She gave it her all and it wasn't enough. She physically couldn't do things Simone could. I think accepting that was probably really tough for her but a wise and mature thing to do. And then someone tells her it was the equivalent to giving up? nah

      You acknowledge that gymnastics is different from boxing, but you don't understand why that makes Laila's comment ill-informed. It's not a matter of Aly vs Simone or Aly's belief in herself. It's that based on their routines, it's mathematically impossible for Aly to overtake Simone without Simone messing up. There's nothing Aly herself can do about it.

  • @chuckie102883
    @chuckie102883 7 лет назад +1399

    I get what Laila was trying to say as a general but unless you KNOW GYMNASTICS and you KNOW SIMONE Biles and her capabilities and you KNOW the gymnastics judging system with the code of points, mathematically Simone could have fell twice and still would have won. She's unbeatable.

    • @KaraMYoung
      @KaraMYoung 7 лет назад +73

      Well yeah, losing a full point in an event final is going to cost you a gold medal. But Simone was so good that even with a fall, she would've gotten silver over Amy Tinkler. On freaking floor exercise.Her floor scores were so high that she could afford a bad day and still make the podium, whereas everyone else had to have the routine of their lives to get there lol In comparison, if Aly had had a fall in 2012, she would've finished off the podium. Simone came into Rio as the 3-time reigning world champion on floor. There's literally no way Aly would have won outright if they both had hit routines and that's the issue with what Laila said. She made it sound like Aly could win if she put her mind to it or something lol Laila better ask about Simone.

      Thank you for putting into words exactly what I was thinking. :-)

    • @aekislandangel
      @aekislandangel 7 лет назад +6

      UniquelyMade yeah the thing with her routine is because she is so much smaller, lighter, and younger than Ally and she also had a much more difficult routine because of those factors so her overall routine put her an entire point ahead of everyone else doing floor because of the difficulty and the precision which she did those skills with and as anyone who know in gymnastics having a point advantage is a huge deal.
      In the all arounds at the Olympics that is the closest anyone has ever come to beating Simone on a National or Internal level. Simone is also on the cusp of a new age in gymnastics where new skills will be added which will add greatly to the difficulty of these routines.

    • @aekislandangel
      @aekislandangel 7 лет назад +10

      Sally Vee I understand that but Simone had enough leyway with her level of difficulty that she could have the minor mishaps. Simone has not lost floor or all around since 2013 I believe. Also Ally could have upped her difficulty and been on par with Simon but keeping her legs together in her tuck out of her double Arabian but she and her coach have aid herself she cannot do that without serious risk if I hurt to herself. So Aly works with the skills she has and refined them until they are practically perfect and honestly with her routine and what that was worth she almost had a perfect score from her end of things. It just ended up that Simone's higher level of difficulty won out. The only way Simon could have lost if if she didn't sick her landings(fell), went out of bounds, or had her legs separated durring her flips and turns. Now Simon only won the all around by 2.198 points which is the closet anyone has ever come to beating her in big competition like that. To put it in the words of this great article I had saved "On Thursday, her maximum possible score was 65.9, compared with her teammate Aly Raisman’s 65.2 and eventual bronze medalist Aliya Mustafina’s 64.4. To jeopardize her first-place finish in the all-around, Biles would have needed to mess up spectacularly-multiple times."
      Ally only lost a total of 4.202 which is astounding. While Simone lost 3.702. So she lost 1 and a half more pints than Simone, and Simone still had 2 points to spare. That's a huge gap in gymnastics but honestly both those girls were so much higher in difficulty than every other girl they would have had to fall in every event not to medal.
      Also Ally is the second most decorated Olympic gymnastics ever, behind Shannon Miller, and that is so much more than any gymnast could ever dream for. Also Ally was the team captain so it was basically her job to encourage and hype the girls up and tell them they were gonna win as much as she told herself. Overall I'm really impressed with her and I hope to see them come back next Olympics. I hope to see Ally do one more challenging element on beam and I'd like to see Simone be more consistent on beam.

    • @intldawn
      @intldawn 7 лет назад +30

      Yeah, Laila was oversimplifying Aly's attitude as being defeatist. Simone is one of the best gymnasts in history and put together one of the most stunning runs between 2013-2016. She was light years ahead of the field and forced everyone to come chase her. Even when she wasn't perfect, she'd still beat the field by a mile. There's something to be said about an athlete who is truly special and leaps past everyone else--that's what Simone did. Not all that different from someone like Michael Phelps or Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan, etc. It's not a knock on Aly or anyone else. Aly accomplished so much more than I think I lot of people thought she could. She was never considered a strong all-around athlete and yet, she barely missed an AA medal in London, then came back and won silver in Rio. She defied expectations in so many ways. That she couldn't catch up to Simone had nothing to do with Aly's attitude or lack of belief that she could, in my opinion. And I think Aly's mom's advice was right on point--to be the best you you can be. That's all you can ask for. Not only did that serve her well in gymnastics but it's a great perspective to have in life in general.

  • @HillaryCampbell
    @HillaryCampbell 7 лет назад +573

    Aly had already won a gold, and she had the right idea by being humble and accepting the situation. Laila seemed very condescending, to me, here. I think it's actually quite nice to acknowledge when someone just has "it" a little bit better than you do in that particular place and moment. It's cool. It doesn't make you less, it doesn't make you worse, it's just an acknowledgement of the moment. Go, Aly!

  • @acarie14
    @acarie14 7 лет назад +904

    I watched this on Netflix and was put off by Laila's comment. It really wasn't needed and Aly was answering a question about not being catty in sports. Aly knew she probably wouldn't win floor and instead of being mad and jealous of her friend Simone, she did the best she could do and in the end, that's all that matters. It's not like she gave up and stopped trying to win. Laila's comment is making it seem like Aly doesn't push herself as hard because she knew SImone was going to win. It's not like Aly stop trying, so the whole, "it'll always be that way" comment was unnecessary.

Aly came back and was the best she had been in her career, Simone remained undefeated for 3 years and she could ultimately of fallen 2 times and still won. Aly went in there to claim the medal that was taken from her in 2012, she didn't care what placement she wanted to regain the title that was taken from her in a tie breaker. Yes the comment was true but she devoted her entire life for that meet and until you've walked a mile in her shoes and you fully understand the sport of gymnastics then you will realize her way of thinking about the meet. She is truly a remarkable athlete who I've come to meet a couple times and she's one of the most positive and encouraging people out there. That comment was unnecessary.

  • @crystalmanteuffel8858

    The only way to beat Simone Biles is if Simone Biles makes a mistake. Hence, why Simone got bronze on beam and not gold on beam. No one competing was better than Simone. Simone had won every single floor event final she had entered since 2013. If Aly had raised her start value, she might have had a chance, but she physically couldn't or she would have risked injury. No one else can do the difficulty level Simone did. So your only chance is second or risk your life. Most people aren't going to risk their life so they HAVE to settle for second which when you are going against the GOAT, you're still winning.

    • @CaliDreams1
      @CaliDreams1 7 лет назад +8

      Crystal that is exactly it. Ms. Biles start value is higher then Ms. Raisman as she does harder elements. The only way that Aly could have beat her is if Simone had made a huge mistake. But like you said is it worth permanent injury to get that gold? While I understand how Mrs. Ali's statement could be off putting it was only to say that you can only do you and not worry about others and be happy with going out and giving your best routine.

    • @malikb2939
      @malikb2939 6 лет назад +1

      Haha....I LOVE Aly Raismen to death! But I like how you worded this situation about if she had pushed herself harder she might've suffered an injury and a risk to her life.
      When you said that, and given that Simone was just in another world altogether, it really put into focus, GENES!
      I hate to sound like a racist or like a sore-loser because like I said, I LOVE Aly Raismen. But she is a White woman. She lacks the genes to truly top greatness at the level Simone did.
      It's like that in any major sports of Black Men and White Men. Be it basketball, football, MMA, Boxing etc. The Black Man performs at a level the ordinary Whiteboy will never be able to duplicate. But whatever greatness the Whiteboy acheived, the Black Man can easily topple that and go beyond.
      Its all in the GENES, really. To be Black is to be dominant in those aspect of the Black genes. To be White is to be ordinary or average with some instances of performing rare feats you normally see in Black Men. But it's never common with Whites.
      They have a weaker genetic....kinda inferior to the level of genetics by Blacks. And that certainly was the case between Aly and Simone. Aly was at her very, very best for a White girl and Simone had her performance looking pretty ordinary but good.
      You can't topple the Black Genes. There is none like us as Humans. We are the first Mankind. They (Whites/Caucasians) came later as an abnormal offspring out of us. An inferior, recessive gene stock but still Human and capable to be "like" us.

    That is disrespectful of them to make those comments. They are undermining her opinion because she is younger. She did not mean that she felt inferior to Biles at all. She is an adult and ahem, Olympian champion, who understands her capabilities and limits and CHOOSES to take the high road by letting go of her EGO and ACCEPT that you can’t always win it all. She is not perfect, and she will not always win against her competitors. If she instead would have kept putting herself down and be obsessed to beat Biles, then that would have been worse for her and the team.It takes real courage to be a good team player.

Boxing might as well be WWA...because it is a huge spoof on reality. I love Laila, but she fell several points with that comment. I love Simone. She is otherworldly. But Aly is my all-around champ...hell, she beat the All-Around champ 4 years later with a silver...that is not an easy feat. The reason people do not do their best, is because they are stuck on beating someone else. What was she supposed to do...pull a Tonya Harding and try to dismantle the competition through cheat?

    Leila has a a valid point... however, she doesn’t know gymnastics and doesn’t understand how Difficulty and execution scores work. In that floor final... Aly literally did a perfect routine. But she doesn’t have the Same difficult skills as Simone. The only way to beat someone in gymnastics is by having harder skills compared to the rest or by the competitors falling. It’s not like other sports where you can knock someone out or serve faster, score more points. It’s a very common misunderstanding of gymnastics.

    They have NO CLUE what they're talking about! In Aly's situation, she handled it the best way she could have. Everybody knew that Simone Biles was going to win Floor Exercise. I honestly think it takes a great deal of maturity to come to terms with that, accept it, and still go out there and compete your butt off! Aly is humble, and they aren't! Winning isn't everything all the time. They really need to shut up.

Everybody other country hoped she would fall so they have a chance, but aly is not going to hope her best friend forever falls. At this point it was. Race for the silver and aly knew that. The WHOLE world knew that.

    Alright I understand the mentality of not giving up no matter what, and refusing defeat, and whatever, but I think Aly's mentality here was not only appropriate, but necessary! Thinkng otherwise could have easily been psycologically destructive (always trying your hardest, putting in the work, etc. but receiving the same result over and over, and for YEARS) and bad for the team. It isn't the case that she stopped trying, but rather that she started trying to be her best self rather than to prove something to people.

    I get that in a sport like wrestling, racing, or swimming something like what Laila says rings true. But for gymnastics...Simone was a superhuman and no one could beat her. The way that gymnastics works is so that if you have the difficulty and level of execution someone like Simone has across the board...you are untouchable even with a fall. Also there aint nothing wrong with winning a silver

    • @elmiratchagop3642

      Not true. At the 2015 world championship. Simone still won the gold with a terrible beam and stepped out on the floor. This girl is untouchable. She hasn’t lost a competition in almost 5 years. If aly had a chance Simone needed to fall multiples times(which Simone never does)

    Wow. This was a lesson in narcissists speaking to a sane person. Laila Ali, for as talented as she may be, is only in her sport due to her father's accomplishments and his genes. She also had a much longer period of time to accomplish her potential dreams for her own sport AND she was never dealing with the level of competition that a gymnast deals with. Millions of girls enter gymnastics by the age of 3 or 4 years old (in the US alone, we're not even talking about the international competition). The competition is ten times what a female boxer will ever see in their lifetime. Boxing is a field in which barely any women or girls have interest to pursue professionally. Laila waited to be 18 to begin training and to the age of 22 to box publicly against barely equipped novices. She doesn't have a clue what it would take to compete in a sport in which a third of the female population of her time has at some point or another attempted to compete.
    Gymnastics like any sport is about the genes we're born with plus the financial investment one is able to make in one's training. 🤷🏾‍♀️
    Laila can take a whole back seat to Aly.
    Aly started training at 18 months old.
    18 months, not 18 years.
    Don't question her resolve or her ability to compete. She was at the Olympics at 18, the same age Laila finally figured out what she wanted to do with her life. Please.
    Not to mention she accomplished all that whilst being in a horrendously abusive organization (USA gymnastics).
    So, I just don't see how Laila felt she had a right to speak on any of this. She can stfu.

    A large part of gymnastics judging is based on difficultly of the routine. Simone's level of difficulty in her routines were much higher than anyone else's, hence Aly saying she knew she was going to second (unless Simone fell on her face). She's already a champion, you think she doesn't know how to work as hard as she possibly can? Laila Ali was being a pretentious asshole. As if she has the right to speak, she spent half her career ducking the top female fighters and cherry picked her opponents for easy wins.

Aly knew her competition very well. she tried her very best and got second. That's what happened that day between her and Simone. • @carl3063

    Laila is tough. But, basketball players concede to players deemed better all the time. Venus does to Serena. Salieri had to concede to Mozart. There's no reason why you can't go out and compete, but if someone was born with a tremendous amount of natural talent, there's nothing that can be done about it, unless there's an opportunity where they stop working as hard.

    In Rio, Biles’s routine started from a 6.9D score while Raisman’s was a 6.6. In general, I get Layla’s point, but she clearly knows nothing about gymnastics and how complicated the judging process is. For Aly to have won, she needed Simone to fall or she would have needed to upgrade to an equal D-score and even then, Simone’s execution score was higher (a 6.9+9.066 vs. Aly’s 6.6+8.900, which was typically due to her form). It was sweet for Aly to acknowledge how tremendous Simone was and to accept w/o a mistake from Biles, she would have to be happy with 2nd. We love you Aly!

    Unfortunately, Laila was speaking out of ignorance. Gymnastics and boxing are to completely different sports (yes, they're both sports no matter how hard some people may try to argue otherwise). For starters, gymnastics is totally dependent on the judges. If someone like Simone Biles hits all her points with no mistakes it would be mathematically impossible for Aly to match or beat her since Simone's short, more compact body will always give her the advantage as long as she stays healthy which she has so far.

    This video upsets me so much. Gymnastics is not like any other sport you can’t score more points that day and simply when. When you understand that, you’ve trained your entire life, and you make a come back to the Olympics then you can give an opinion

    So many say that Simone is super human. She is a human with a natural gift and an intense love of the sport. Pls remember, she was initially in the foster care system. Had she not been "discovered" during a field trip, we would not be seeing this phenomenal woman. The kicker is how many others are out there with similar skill but do not have the same opportunity to train and compete? Regarding Aly, if memory serves me correctly, she was somewhat nasty to Gabrielle Douglas. Karma is indeed funny and fickle. Had Simone been a lesser athlete than Aly, she (Aly) most definitely would not have sought out her (Simon's) friendship.
