Wow, You don't know how happy I was to see this upload, and when I realized it was related to my question?! I was even happier, because it couldn't have come at a better time. In this process of learning to learn, virtual educators and artists like yourself are essential! Thank you! 💜
Ah! Thanks Jessica :) thank you sooo much for your comment, the question is so important. It's really tough to navigate on your own, relying on online content, so I hope i covered at least some of the answer here. I'm sure there's much more to discuss, and an in-person situation would be so much better. But, glad if this video helps a bit. Keep going and drawing, you can always Let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks again for your support on this channel, means a lot! 😀
Thanks. I went to a course last night and really messed up worrying about proportions and got really confused with poses due to foreshortening. Also found using the pastel difficult but loved working from a live model. This looks like a better way for me and I love your teaching style. I think teaching a class is very difficult to do.
Hi, I’m trying to find my style and favourite drawing medium. I've recently started going back to life drawing classes after a near 10 year absence, and feel like I have forgotten everything I learned at college around 40 years ago. I’m really enjoying your videos. I’m also struggling with hand eye coordination in the sense that my eyesight has deteriorated with age. I can see objects and people in the distance, but not reading distance - without glasses. So I'm also learning how to interpret what I can see from afar to the magnified marks I'm making on paper. I had a practice tonight at your gesture technique. My brain keeps over analysing. But the more figures I drew, the more fluid my lines were. I am having to start over, with the basics. 😊
Hello. I am very new to figure drawing and am trying to learn from multiple sources. I like that observation is an important aspect. My goals are to be able to draw with precision and abstract. Thank you for your video
That's so great to hear! You'll have a much stronger skillset if you can practice drawing with both. It's great that there are so many sources of learning available online, so soak it all up, and if you can get to a life drawing class, or session that would be a really good addition. Let me know how you get on! :)
I agree that as we start to draw its normal we are lost. Iv never had lesson and my way seems to work by building. For example I'm doing a drawing I found of a fantastic statue of a skeleton and a person in a cemetery ( not mine it's from the net but it's only to practice not to sell) and i started with the wings the skeleton has and work down ,next is the skeleton head. I find key points and use them that way. If that makes any sense and I measure with my eye. This works for me! So we are all different
I really enjoy your channel, I did not notice a drawing/ drafting table is there a reason why you don't use one and I like the tables you use ! I just have to know before I go out and buy a table or drawing table, THANK you
Hi! thanks so much, really delighted to hear you enjoy the videos. To answer your question, I usually draw on an easel, but have to use a table to film the drawing process, so there's no other reason really. I have one table that I draw on, and the other 2 are actually just doors on trestles!! 😂 !!
Love this video and love how you teach. I completed your foundation drawing course on Udemy and the observational techniques have helped me immensely in my growth as an artist. I am also signed up for your figure drawing course on Udemy and will be starting that soon. I can't wait to continue learning more about contour and gesture drawing techniques with you 😊😊
I am watching this a 3rd or even 4th time and suddenly 'hearin'g what you consider the fundamental skills to be. Learning Observation and Expression, this so resonates with me because I realize that this is what I am missing and why I seem to have hit a plateau, now I know why. How do I go backwards?
Hi Karen, thank you so much - it does sound simplistic, especially given that the figure is so complex; we often want to put too much emphasis on an analytical approach to anatomy etc. but really the strongest drawing skillset is simply knowing how to look, and having the confidence to express that in line. Then you can draw anything whether its complex or not, no need to simplify things first. So glad this resonates with you!! ❤
hI Denise; yes i switched from charcoal to a pencil, but just to refine the drawing and add finer lines. I think that was the logic... it's often interesting to use two different mediums if they compliment each other. Charcoal and ink can sometimes work together as well. Thanks for watching and for all your comments, means a lot! 😊❤

Lovely studio!
Observation is the process. Thanks always a great help, I'm beginning my art skills.
It's definitely process driven! There is always more that can be seen. Exciting times to be starting your art journey!! Let me know how it goes :)

Nice
you switch drawing tool while drawing? or did you change your mind about the best tool you need?
