  • If you have cream and dark brown water based paints in a matte finish you can create a Lime Wash look over an existing paint color. Let me show you how to dilute your paint, apply in crosshatches and blot the texture. Alternatively, you may use furniture waxes to achieve the look, shop your paint stash and see what you already have!

Charlotte! Love the wallpaper. My mom was ahead of her time. Our living room growing up was long and the walls were a coffee with cream color with beige drapes, an Irish linen cream sofa sectional near the fireplace. The other side of the room had a Chinese red brocaded with fringe and tifted couch with dark turquoise chairs the same material. It was just lovely.

Although I am more linear like your husband I really like the treatment on your walls! It's feels almost like an aging technique.
PS...love that you are so inspired by Jane Austen. In 2015 I did a trip to England and stopped in Chawton for a couple of days and became pen pals with her great-grandphew 6x removed. It was such a wonderful surprise and a treasured time of our trip...He is a Knight...his brother owns Chawton Manor and all of the inherited properties. Jane's older brother was adopted by the Knights as they had no children.
    Such an amazing vacation!

I am a retired interior decorative painter. I called this technique a "colorwash". It was always my favorite decorative technique and my clients , as well. I loved it's "old world" look.
I always used a soft colowash brush, floetrol , and cheesecloth. ( Just a few helpful tips). Although I am great at "cutting in" around ceilings and trim, I always taped off. It gives you more freedom of movement an a crisper line. It is funny to see how trends go in and out. I did a home at least every week in this technique 20 years ago.
I think we will see it resurge. I also love Venetian Plaster.

I'm a reader, I can't believe I've never read it before. I'm in my mid 80s. This Fall, I'll be sitting in my cozy chair with a cup of tea, an Edison bulb in my Tiffany lamp, a soft blanket over my legs that are propped up on my velvet ottoman, reading the genius of Jane Austen!❤

I had to smile because I do the same thing. Over 25 years ago I mixed glaze with paint and went over my dark walls for the age effect. It turned out beautiful and looked good with my white furniture. My walls were dark taupe. The glaze helped with the texture and extending the paint. There were different types of glazes then and only a small amount was needed. My son got use to me changing things and made a comment, “Was i tornado proofing the walls? 😂 it’s only paint and very fixable. Whatever you choose will be beautiful! ❤ And many years ago I painted a small room in a russet/brown color,, glazed over it and it turned out looking as an old brick. It was very pretty!

Team Lizzy for sure. Have you ever looked into Amy Howard Home paints and patina's. I'm doing a old world technique on my front door right now with milk paint and wax. I love milk paint, the paint everyone used to make and paint with on their own, no VOC's or petroleum bases. This also does not look like a rag rolled wash, looks pretty with the wash and the clear wax for my taste.

All my walls have been slowly painted the same color off white. Sort of boring but I change everything else all the time so a steady background is for me.

Hi Sarah. I hope you read this and can answer my question. You inspire me and I'm grateful for all your content, especially your love for the Lord. My question is this--I have a pretty cabbage rose wallpaper in my powder room. However, it is vinyl and I hate that. I have 3 kids and taught lots of piano students in my home for years and I chose the vinyl many, many years ago for its durability. I can't replace it now and I'm wondering if I could do a lime wash or mod podge or anything else over the wallpaper to disguise the vinyl and dull it down a little. I would so appreciate your advice. Thank you. God keep you.

Sarah, you DO have an amazing creative design talent!!! My technical side is kicking up and so I need to ask "is the light blue" used the Country Grey Chalk paint listed in the "products"? If so, would it affect the end result if the 2024 pigment is slightly different than 2018/2019? The Purple Painted Lady explained why they changed. It appears this paint had a slight tinge of sage and now it uses greenish raw umber. What are your comments and would you suggest another paint color that matches the original pigment to use with your wall color?

The camera people illuminated their faces in P&P. Their skin glistens and are the lamps in the room. So there is your contrast and lighting.
Also of of the background blues had sort of a metallic brightness to them. You might want to tweak your film to capture that to lighten them up to where they look more like your room.

Im dealing with this same issue. Went for dark academia with very dark grey matching our couch. 2 yrs later, I'm not sure about it. 1920s house with heavy texture (dont know what to call it wish I could send it to you) so it felt hard to pick color based on this texture. We live in ND and want a little house on the prairie/pride and prejudice/ meets sarah plain and tall/cottage feel. I have 11 landscape paintings in my living room so it was hard to pick a color to make those pop and not compete. But the dark grey is just so dark. My husband loves it me and my daughter are feeling more creams now. He says thats not dramatic enough based on the texture we need to make it look intentional. Theres no way to cover the texture for now. One income. So it is a bully. I dont know how to achieve our goals with these variables. This painting technique may help. Also bring in warmth and brown has helped a bit. But I still dont know what the next step should be.

@colemansinacottage7701 Maybe it is the gray that is the problem, it can be too cool of a color. Maybe try a saturated and dark brown, which would warm things up, but also be moody and dramatic like you seem to need.
