Sadly, I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert the night his helicopter crashed after the show at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin August 26th 1990. The fog was so bad that we stopped and got a hotel room on the way home. The next morning when I got the horrible news I was devastated. The lineup was SRV, Eric Clapton, Robert Cray, Stevie's brother Jimmie and Buddy Guy. RIP SRV!

I was so fortunate to see him play live twice, you guys should definitely check out his other tunes especially the song "Texas Flood Live At Elmocambo" -- its the best slow blues guitar number you will EVER see.
@rebeccarose already said it. One of the last things my dad got me was the VCR tape of this performance, because he knew how much I loved it, & SRV. You guys crushed my soul with this, but in the best of ways. He also bought me my first guitar & amp when I turned 11, with lessons over the summer, with the promise of buying me a better guitar & amp if he saw that I was serious. A couple of years later, he made good on his promise. I'm 50 years old now, & still jammin'. I think of my dad almost every time I pick up one of my 3 axes. Thank you for contributing to keeping the amazing excellence of SRV alive. Keep on Rockin'. 🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
SRV was an icon and guitar master. I mourn the loss of that talent from this world. His rendition of "Voodoo Child" is one of my all time favorites. Thanks for doing this song.
SRV is a guitar GOD! A real guitar player’s guitarist. And the drum and bass were certainly keeping it strong behind. The Austin City Limit’s shows (on PBS) has some amazing musicians play and always has great sound. Love this so much. RIP Stevie Ray! 🎸❤️🎶
THIS is the video your guitar watches when you are not home. I think Stevie is the only guitarist who can do justice to Jimi’s playing. You ought to listen to Stevie’s cover of Little Wing. Number One---yeah, Stevie treated her bad. But rumor is, she liked it, lol. Hard to believe the old scarred gal is worth a cool million now. She used to belong to Christopher Cross and was real pretty back then. That was the Austin City Limits 1989 show. What I would have given to have been there. This was his last appearance on the show. He died almost a year later. Stevie Ray was amazing, but when he got clean & sober, he was truly a force to be reckoned with…. BTW, he began drinking when he was 7 until he was 30. He started using drugs as a teen, again up until he was 30. Got to where he had to pour his c0caine into a shot of whiskey for breakfast. He was not a big man, he was maybe 5 foot 7, but he could probably take enough in that one shot of whiskey to k!ll a giant. Thank g-d, he got clean the last 4 years of his life. The other guys in the band HAD to be on their toes with Stevie. He couldn’t read music, so he played by ear and every time he played a song, it was a little different from the last time he played. But, yeah, the drums and bass where tighter than a clam’s @$$hole, lol! Chris “Whipper” Layton (drums) and Tommy Shannon on bass. Tommy played at Woodstock with Johnny Winter. They were both amazing. Interesting factoid #1: Stevie was using Jimi Hendrix’s wah pedal (and an Ibanez Tube Screamer). Way back when Stevie’s brother Jimmy was the hot young guitar player in Dallas, his band got to open for Jimi when he came to Fort Worth. Jimi’s wah pedal was broken, so he borrowed Jimmy’s for the show. A few months afterwards, Jimmy gets a package from Jimi. Jimi had his old broken wah pedal fixed and gave it to Jimmy in appreciation. How frickin cool is THAT?? Jimmy eventually gave it to Stevie because Stevie idolized Jimi (Stevie also wore a couple of Jimi’s scarves in older videos. Factoid #2: SRV and the gang went and played a show at a prison one summer (not sure where though). Trouble is, the equipment truck got lost on the way there. Luckily, they still had enough equipment to play, but Stevies effect pedals were not part of it. As they are playing in the 100 degree heat, one of the inmates shouts, “Play Voodoo Child!!” Stevie: “Cant. All the Voodoo is in the truck!"
This was one of the BEST comments I've ever seen - no joke. The first line had me in tears laughing!!! Thanks so much for the (really helpful and interesting) info. Please keep coming back with more comments!!! Thank you for being here. ✌🏽🤘🏽

This is from the TV show 'Austin City Limits'. He appeared on the show twice, once when he was just starting to become famous and this one, right before he was sadly killed.
have ya ever checked out "25 or 6 to 4" live from Tanglewood? Chicago 1970. The late Terry Kath in my opinion could run circles around any guitar player.
For a bit of trivia, the bassist Tommy Shannon played at Woodstock backing Johnny Winter. You mentioned how he makes playing look so easy but he used some of the heaviest strings made. They are so difficult to use that most guitar players avoid them. He developed such thick callouses on his left hand that one time they peeled off. There is a rumor that ne glued them back on for his next performance.
Well artbangly as I believe the song goes “ if there’s a Rock n Roll heaven, they must have a hell of a band” There’s so many incredible musicians and singers have left us science I’ve been running around this big blue marble but those are the guitarist that I thought of first , gut yeah Jonny was one of my earliest favorites as a young teenager …….. besides John & George of course. But I play drums so what do I know. lol.
Guarantee you hendrix is not in heaven. You don't go to heaven just because you're a good guitar player. That sinful MFr is nowhere near heaven. Duane Allman, either. You people can't refuse a relationship with Jesus and think you'll be in heaven just because people like your music. Does NOT work that way.

But did hear rumors of this Quiet kid in a local band that was blowing peoples minds . Did get to see him live many times after he became big. Stevie loved playing in his hometown. He was a down to earth kind of shy guy . But man put that guitar in his hands and the magic always happened.
A thought just came to my mind as I was watching this. The two people who many consider the best of all time, Jimmi and Stevie, have something else in common. Both were self taught, (although Stevie definitely had mentors), and neither of them could read music. At all. I guess when you are a conduit direct to the gods of music, not much else matters.
That is a lot of power for a 3 piece band. Live from Austin City Limits. Tommy Shannon on bass was also the bass player for Johnnie Winter. He played a bit of guitar too and his twin brother Edgar played a bit of everything.
A cool reaction video, how about doing a reaction video to the greatest guitar player you never heard of. Rory Gallagher - Shin Kicker live at Montreux 1979. Jimi was once asked how does it feel being the greatest guitar player in the world, Jimi said he doesn't know they would have to ask Rory Gallagher. Rory's concerts where very high energy with amazing guitar playing, Rory sold over 30 million albums thru the 1970's. Thank you and enjoy!
Believe this was on broadcast tv (PBS) -- Austin City Limits, one of the most under-rated music shows on the boob-tube back in the day. SRV was directly channeling Jimi that night! Chris Layton (drums) and Tommy Shannon (bass, via Johnny Winters' bands) complete "SRV and Double Trouble." Later, a keyboardist joined in -- Reese Wynans; check out the video for the song "Look at Little Sister," as it shows all 4 playing their hearts out (and it has the smoothest-ever guitar switch-out you'll see on stage during the song). I'll go ahead and mention a "must hear" of SRV's: live at El Mocambo "Texas Flood." Be prepared to freak-out!!!
WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY TOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCCCCCCHHHHHHHHH LEAD IN..................... GEESHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! ♥♥♥ “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
"Stevie was an endless, open channel that music just poured out of. He made people who'd never touched a guitar in their life want to pick one up and start playing, and he made those of us who'd played with him live onstage before want to quit."................Eric Clapton.
Yes, the Austin City Limits show is a very important piece of musical history, but you all are missing out by not checking out the El Mocambo show from Toronto, before he really hit it big. This song in particular hits even harder at the slower pace from that night in 1983.
Drummer Chris Layton, Bass Tommy Shannon, they eventually added keyboardist Resse Wynans. The funny thing is, Stevie Ray Vaughan didn’t actually play just one set of strings. He actually played as light as 12s and as heavy as 17s at one point, but for most of his career, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s main guitars, his Number One and Lenny that are super legendary, were strung up with 13s-which is probably what you’ve heard of when you heard about Stevie Ray Vaughan’s guitar string gauges in the past. What you may not have heard of is that Stevie Ray Vaughan’s 13s weren’t your normal 13s. If you go to a guitar store and ask for a set of 13s for electric guitar, the chances are, the gauges inside that set are going to look a lot like a set of 13s for acoustic. Most likely, they’re going to go something like 13, 17, 26 wound for the third string, 36, 46, and 56. (Side note, Stevie Ray Vaughan is hardly the only famous guitarist to use a custom set of strings. Everyone from Jimi Hendrix to David Gilmore, Billy Gibbons, Tony Iommi, and many, many more have used very, very customized gauged sets of strings in order to dial in their setup for exactly how they play the guitar.)
Austin City Limits is a show that comes on PBS and is the longest-running music series in American television history. Dig a little and enjoy what you find. Great reaction to the best guitar player ever. By the way, I think he almost always used a plectrum as he used extremely heavy guitar strings.
Lmfao that is a myth that is total BS and has been said of many guitar players including Kurt Cobain. It is not even possible to wire a piano wire in a Strat, SRV used regular guitar strings usually in the 13 gauge ballpark but as high as 18. This is from his own interview from 1983.
Sound guys have said that when he would come out to do sound checks, he'd play for like 30 minutes and it was better than the show. I'm usually a Friday Fry but I love me some SRV so I had to watch, thanks! Hi Ninja, see you guys on Friday
Stevie is my top 2 all time guitarist, he play like that guitar is just an extension on his body. Y'all got to checkout Texas Flood live at El Mocambo it's amazing.
The PBS television program AUSTIN CITY LIMITS. Not real sure if it’s still a thing though. Also in Austin Texas there is a statue of him on the bank of the Colorado River that runs the city. I have made the pilgrimage to pay my respects
@@harrietmiller3982 most excellent! There are other cool things to see and do in Austin also. Totally off topic and you may have already been able to do this but I also tell people that if in any financially possible way you can, every American should see Yellowstone National Park at least once in their life.
I was in high school when Jimi Hendrix hit the music world. We were all dumb founded by what we were watching and listening too. Holy crap, he changed the music world as we knew it. For 40 years I wondered what it would sound like to hear Jimi at 50 years old. Now it's been over 30 years since we lost Stevie and I wonder the same thing . I won't say who's the GOAT between those 2. All I'll say is, I, like millions of other music lovers, we've all been fortunate to live in a time where we got to hear both of them play when they were at their best. How lucky we are.
BBKing said that Stevie was blacker than any musician on the planet ,, nobody held a candle to Stevie.. only one Stevie .,.and oh yeah .. he couldn't read music.., he did not have to he was transmitting straight from the universe
I was, and always will be a huge fan, of Jimi Hendrix. But, IMHO, Stevie Ray Vaughan is better than Jimi. Jimi was a great innovator. He made sounds come out of a guitar, that no one else even thought of trying. Without Jimi, we may never have had guys like Stevie. RIP gentlemen.
@5:40 is one of the rare (maybe only) times you'll ever see Stevie make a mistake on stage. He stumbles on the lyrics coming into the verse and then (I believe) at 5:50 maybe out of anger or frustration that he flubbed the lyrics (on National TV) get's a little too busy in his phrasing. Besides breaking a string or knocking his guitar out of tune it's the only legit "mistake" I've ever seen him make/.
His initials used to be on the upper left of #1 (favorite guitar)...wore'm out and dropped them lower... Entertaining Upload! 👍 Edit- Trios ALWAYS rock Watch them watch each other...Just say'n...
Yes he used a pic and was known to use the butt end because it was stiffer. He was hell on a pic as I believe you might of seen when he bent over to pic one up? Not sure
The only person to play hendrix better than hendrix. That might be on a cruise ship.the bassist is very good. You should listen and watch Texas flood live. There's the MTV acoustic performance that's incredible. If you watch him and hendrix play the 12 string SRV blows hendrix out of the water.
PBS used to do a show from Austin, TX. It was called Austin City Limits. This is from the show that SRV did. The bass player is Tommy Shannon. He is an outstanding player in his own right.
Well, having this channel has shown us SO many musicians who are absolutely amazing. So I can’t agree with that statement. But, SRV was something special. People like that aren’t a dime a dozen, regardless of what era you’re in. He’s special. But we’ve definitely found a lot of phenomenal musicians by really being open and giving many things a chance. This channel has sort of forced us to really listen to things…and by doing so, we found lots of stuff we wouldn’t normally have found. So, it’s out there….just need to give things a real chance in order to find them.
LOVE the reaction!! :) Maybe check out NEIL PEART Buddy Rich HONOR??? :) ♥ “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
Hendrix may have been more creative, but Stevie was a much better, cleaner, more musical player who, unlike Hendrix, rarely descended into cacophony. Stevie makes a lot of Hendrx vastly more listenable. This song is a case in point.
Fun fact, the foot pedal he is using in the beginning of the song was given to him by Jimi Hendrix family when he showed up on their doorstep and humbly asked if he could cover Jimmy’s song they give him the foot pedal and their blessing.
You need to listen to Tightrope ,and Leave My Girl Alone from that same show
He was so hard on those guitars, he strung them with piano wire. If you watch the end, where he's using the bar, you can see how white his hand turns.
Lmfao that is a myth that is total BS and has been said of many guitar players including Kurt Cobain. It is not even possible to wire a piano wire in a Strat, SRV used regular guitar strings usually in the 13 gauge ballpark but as high as 18. This is from his own interview from 1983.
Austin City Limits is the name. And it's like a weekend long music event with one big name recorded for TV.
His bass player Tommy Shannon use to play for Johnny Winter and now plays for Joe Bonamassa. Jim
It was Austin City Limits. One of the longest running music shows ever.
Sound guys have said that when he would come out to do sound checks, he'd play for like 30 minutes and it was better than the show. I'm usually a Friday Fry but I love me some SRV so I had to watch, thanks! Hi Ninja, see you guys on Friday
The sound check video where it looks like he just walked in and didnt bother to take off his coat
It was on Austin City limits when the show was worth watching.
Stevie is my top 2 all time guitarist, he play like that guitar is just an extension on his body. Y'all got to checkout Texas Flood live at El Mocambo it's amazing.
Thanks, Ginger!! I've done Texas Flood, please check it out when you have time: ruclips.net/video/UB0cF0RZY4Y/видео.htmlsi=kHISc1iUwi_tf4pR
The PBS television program AUSTIN CITY LIMITS. Not real sure if it’s still a thing though. Also in Austin Texas there is a statue of him on the bank of the Colorado River that runs the city. I have made the pilgrimage to pay my respects
Yes Austin City Limits is still going strong and is the longest running PBS show ever.
@@harrietmiller3982 oh very cool. Thanks for the knowledge. ✌️
@@Tbirdhaynes visiting his statue is on my bucket list💙✌️
@@harrietmiller3982 most excellent! There are other cool things to see and do in Austin also. Totally off topic and you may have already been able to do this but I also tell people that if in any financially possible way you can, every American should see Yellowstone National Park at least once in their life.
FYI Austin City limits was started by Willie Nelson ✌️
it was in Austin Tx
This was recorded at Austin City Limits.
It was his final performance on Austin City Limits
If you want to know how much his guitar has been around, watch Third Stone From The Sun at El Mocambo…
The show is Austin City Limits.
Seems they dropped it down when SRV looked over his shoulder @5:22
Third stone from the sun.
This was Austin city limits TV show it has hosted a lot of great performances by many artists.
SRV = THE G.O.A.T.
Edit- Trios ALWAYS rock
Watch them watch each other...Just say'n...
Austin City Limits is the venue, and that’s a 1959 Fender Strat
"Texas Flood" Live at the El Mocambo. Top Teer.
I've done it, thank you!
There is an interesting video done by the luthier who works on Willy Nelson's guitar. Willy spends a fortune to keep that guitar going.
You can't dress like Stevie Ray unless you know you're a badass
Yes he used a pic and was known to use the butt end because it was stiffer. He was hell on a pic as I believe you might of seen when he bent over to pic one up? Not sure
Seen him 5 times homeskilt
Try listening to Stevie and Albert King jamming, out of this world crazy good.
I was at the one before stump
It is a t.v. show. Live from Austin City Limits.
likely...LIVE at Austin City Limits...show
He also used 13 gauge strings exclusively! Wonder why? 😁
Not that night. He used 11s during this show.
check out his version of little wing
The only person to play hendrix better than hendrix. That might be on a cruise ship.the bassist is very good. You should listen and watch Texas flood live. There's the MTV acoustic performance that's incredible. If you watch him and hendrix play the 12 string SRV blows hendrix out of the water.
The wa petal he's usein' belonged to Jimi Hendrix. ❤❤❤❤
Not SNL, Austin City Limits, If you get a chance watch the whole show, Double Trouble at its best.
Most definitely Austin City Limits
PBS used to do a show from Austin, TX. It was called Austin City Limits. This is from the show that SRV did.
The bass player is Tommy Shannon. He is an outstanding player in his own right.
How come people today do NOT have the talent of the musicians of past era's. Humans are digressing
I think that's Austin City Limits.
RIP G O A T
It’s Austin City Limits…that the show they wore at! PBC Broadcasting…oh yeah his version is Better!😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Austin City Limits
Next react rush xanadu live 1981
LOVE the reaction!! :) Maybe check out NEIL PEART Buddy Rich HONOR??? :) ♥ “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” ~ Romans 15:13
Thank you!
Austin City Limits maybe?
Please check out Roy Buchanan.
Hendrix may have been more creative, but Stevie was a much better, cleaner, more musical player who, unlike Hendrix, rarely descended into cacophony. Stevie makes a lot of Hendrx vastly more listenable. This song is a case in point.
