Let me put it this way, Abuja airport have normal people working there but Lagos airport have uniform touts on duty and are ready to frustrate anyone that refuse to bribe his or her way through... Traveling to Nigeria on expired passport or emergency travel certificate is like visiting the devil at the gate of hellfire without proper preparation. If you can avoid it, please do!. All the best to travellers.
I traveled to Nigeria with an expired Nigeria passport in November 2022. No hassle. Though I mentioned to the officer, I have an application pending. We should never give money to anyone asking for it.
I am exactly the same, every time I think about going to Lagos and I remember what the experience of getting through the airport feels like, I feel weak and almost uninspired to book that trip! The airport experience should and must be better especially for Citizens.
I traveled to Lagos with an expired passport in the month of May and had no problem with the immigration officer. In fact that was my third time of visiting Nigeria with expired passport in the last twenty years. Nigeria is my country and have equal right In that country as anybody in Nigeria.
Sassy we made it. Yesterday I was encouraging a family friend to go to Nigeria because he travels everywhere except Nigeria in the 10years I have known him. My guy still remembered how terrible (& traumatising) his experience was 10years ago. He narrated his experience and it is not much different from what I experienced 6 months ago.

Always have copies of documentation, never take things for granted. Some officials are looking for people to stress out, please don't fall into the trap ooooo. Secondly you don't have to pay anyone for doing their job.
Im blessed - I never had a issue at lagos airport- infact I'm treated nicely maybe because I smile lol. I have an abuja review. the airport is nicer no lie BUT the city comes no where near lagos. Lagos is more fun before I head to east
Mine was a while ago, travelled from the UK to Abuja not knowing my Nigerian passport had expired I was surprised I hadn't noticed this earlier, I was asked to step aside and I knew exactly what that meant, i knew i had played into the trap of the passport officer, I was completely at their mercy anyway I eventually parted with some money before I was allowed to proceed on my journey...otherwise they will have delayed me unnecessarily, which I could see they were prepared to do.

My experience is coming back to UK with my British passport not expired but just that my Nigerian passport expired while in nigeria, the immigration officer at the point if final entry to board my flight back to UK refused me boarding the plan even when they saw my valid British passport with me , the delay was beyond my capacity I was forcefully made to give them 50 pounds British pounds sterling before I was allowed to get through to board my flight. Otherwise I will miss my flight. Pls note that thus money I gave to this immigration officer was money sent to me by my children to take a taxi from Heathrow to my house. The demand of the so call officers is appalling and disgraceful, poverty is always worn on their faces,this is a crying shame

Travel to Nigeria in November 2020 from England to Lagos Airport with my Nigeria expired passport no stress the immigration officer just noted on my passport to renew my passport, nothing like giving bribe, everything went fine thats my experience

I got a visa on my American passport to go to Nigeria in 2013. When I got to the airport I gave them my American passport with the visa. They turned it down and asked me for my expired Nigerian passport. I was allowed to board with the expired Nigeria passport. From the US to Nigeria, nobody looked at my American passport with the visa. So, I technically went to Nigeria on an expired Nigerian passport. When I got to PHC, I joined foreigners line as I was going to Nigeria on a visa. The immigration office asked me why I was on the foreign line. I explained, I was told my expired passport was not a problem. I joined the Nigerian line and things went smooth from there. No trouble and I moved on. Yes, you can fly to Nigeria with an expired passport.

Reading through comments on this topic it seems to me that your experience at the Airports in Nigeria, especially Lagos depends on those on duty. Tbh, l would not have any problem giving those workers at the airport money. But l wouldn't want to feel that l am bribing them or that l am being compelled to give out my own my for them to do their job. I want to feel the l am giving out voluntarily.

Hubby traveled a week ago.i made sure I took photos (sceenshots) of his attempts to complete the NITP form. He was asked for the QR code by the airline in the UK , so he explained and they let him board. In Nigeria though around 3 queues , Ports authority slash complete firm again, immigration questions and collection of bags . Took about 2 hours to.leave the MM airport .

In 2012 I traveled to Nigeria with an old Nigerian passport. Once I arrived there, I approached the immigration official and produced my expired passport. Hi Funke, I arrived Lagos International Airport recently with an expired Nigerian passport, I was told the minimum expiry that the immigration can accommodate is 6 months. Mine expired since 2019. I was left a little confused, I told the officer but it was never mentioned how old the expiry should be, and the officer asked me to also show him where they mentioned exactly we can enter Nigeria with almost 2 years expired passport, that they decide the expiry window as Nigerian Immigration. They said I should have obtained ETC or a visa on my Canadian passport instead. They eventually took 5k from me and returned my expired passport and asked me to ensure I renew or at least get the payment slip after capture before leaving Nigeria on my way back to avoid further delays. Hmmm, I believe they will keep using this grey area as a means to obtain passengers for a long while. So, should the passport expiry be exactly within 6 months for this directive to be valid??

The very reason why most folk hate coming home . The grief from these corrupt airport staff is the very reason. The moral - Renew your passport, before you travel . Don’t give these rogues the opportunity to stress your life .
Is it that easy? There are people who've had their passports renewed and they expired without being used.. some of us do not even stay close to Nigerian high commission and cannot afford to pay for passport renewal without getting their passports back from the embassy. The whole country is crazy. They don't even have booklets in their embassies and they put the blame on their citizens. Their incompetence and corruption is killing everyone.

Yes they ask for it. I travelled 3 yrs ago to Abuja from Texas. I didnt have it. They warned me and let me go. I travelled with an american passport with a nigerian visa.

Hello Funke, thanks for this video. I noticed that most of the comments are over 5 months old. My nigerian passport has expired and I am due to fly to nigeria from the UK in 2 months time. Obviously I won't be able to get a new one before then. Are they still allowing people to use their expired passports to travel into nigeria please? My british passport is still valid for the return journey. Many thanks!

In 2012 I traveled to Nigeria with an old Nigerian passport. Once I arrived there, I approached the immigration official and produced my expired passport. They told me that the passport I had was expired and I would have to renew my passport before I could leave Nigeria. then I was on my way, no hassle

Hi Funke, I arrived Lagos International Airport recently with an expired Nigerian passport, I was told the minimum expiry that the immigration can accommodate is 6 months. Mine expired since 2019. I was left a little confused, I told the officer but it was never mentioned how old the expiry should be, and the officer asked me to also show him where they mentioned exactly we can enter Nigeria with almost 2 years expired passport, that they decide the expiry window as Nigerian Immigration. They said I should have obtained ETC or a visa on my Canadian passport instead. They eventually took 5k from me and returned my expired passport and asked me to ensure I renew or at least get the payment slip after capture before leaving Nigeria on my way back to avoid further delays. Hmmm, I believe they will keep using this grey area as a means to obtain passengers for a long while. So, should the passport expiry be exactly within 6 months for this directive to be valid??

The very reason why most folk hate coming home . The grief from these corrupt airport staff is the very reason. The moral - Renew your passport, before you travel . Don’t give these rogues the opportunity to stress your life .
Is it that easy? There are people who've had their passports renewed and they expired without being used.. some of us do not even stay close to Nigerian high commission and cannot afford to pay for passport renewal without getting their passports back from the embassy.
The whole country is crazy. They don't even have booklets in their embassies and they put the blame on their citizens. Their incompetence and corruption is killing everyone.

What if you decide to travel (in and out of Nigeria) within the last 6 months of the life of your passport (say you travel in April but passport expires in June) but also have a second foreign passport. Will that cause trouble with the uniformed people or is it best to try and review whilst in Nigeria?

If you’re a dual citizen (and you have entry right to the UK or USA) , you may encounter some delay in Nigeria but they can’t prevent you from leaving

Yes they ask for it. I travelled 3 yrs ago to Abuja from Texas. I didnt have it. They warned me and let me go. I travelled with an american passport with a nigerian visa.
