Gulman is a master craftsman -- the monologue as a work of art. The writing, the phrasing, the calculated pause...As in all true art, the effort disappears, and we're left just with appreciation and a smile on our face.
the last statement "you will never b $15 short of your dream house. get busy living or get busy dying." is not a joke..its a god damn wisdom! this guy rules. seriously underrated.
"This phone is a seldom used app on my phone." What about this guy is not funny! I can hear his routines over and over. His timing, delivery and point of view is so fresh. I haven't laughed this hard since first hearing Steven Wright on Carson 40 years ago.
This dude is not as famous as he should be. My favorite comedian of all time. He’s one of those guys that doesn’t need a big punchline. He just sprinkles mini punchlines in every 5 seconds, so underrated.
Ricky Gervais once shared a great perspective on criticism: "The best way to avoid criticism is never do anything ever. Or, do what you love, have a great life & let others spend their time criticising."
UserNumber OneTrillion Ok, I'll bite: To show Gervais' first sentence to be false, it's not sufficient to demonstrate one instance where "never doing anything" failed to prevent criticism. To show his first sentence to be false, you need to show that another strategy is more effective at avoiding criticism. And it could be that his first sentence isn't *literally* true. That's not the point. The point is that no matter what a person does, people will find a way to criticize it. Gervais was expressing the view that producing works that will inevitably be criticized by others is more fulfilling and a better use of one's time than doing nothing and/or criticizing the work of others. For that, I score him a 7 out of 10.
severalpaperclips I'm sorry. I didn't know I was talking to a university graduate. Your use of big words is hurting my brain. What are you doing in a Conan video anyway? Don't you have dissertation to write?
UserNumber OneTrillion Darn, I was hoping you actually were doing a Dwight/Gareth impression. You're doing a pretty good Michael Scott impression actually. You know what, UserNumber OneTrillion? This is a place of welcoming, and you should just get the hell out of here.
Gary is the kindest person, a beautiful man. His work ethic, his writing is unmatched. His Conan set about abbreviating state names is BRAVE. Loooong bit with many digressions that get real silly but circle back to the premise. Comedy Draft: Gary Gulman, 1st round pick!
Gary Gulman is about 20 years too late to be as legendary as Seinfeld. The material is great, but it's his style of delivery. He doesn't tell jokes, he tells stories - and beyond that, the magic is in his conversations with himself. The bits are so well crafted. Every word and phrase isn't just funny, but it feels perfectly selected for maximum effect.
Also seems like a nicer guy than Seinfeld. (Although I enjoyed some of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” after a while I kinda felt like I didn’t wanna spend any more time with this Seinfeld guy. Maybe he made too damn much money. . . .)
@@Yochillitsthatserious It's impossible to say what Seinfeld's legacy would be without the show. I know he was basically considered the best stand up comedian in the world. I'm not sure anyone elevates themselves to that status without doing more than just stand up in clubs. Think about the all-time greats. Really only George Carlin stayed in his lane 'mostly' throughout his career. He did SOME other stuff, but didn't rely on movies or a sitcom or anything to bolster his image. If you evaluate them JUST on stand-up then it becomes about longevity, delivery, timing, how prolific they were in terms of writing new material. Seinfeld wrote a TON, but also admits to using old material a lot throughout his career.
+zachmasterzach Underratted is an understatement. There are so many comics today who think they are funny, but aren't. Gary acts like he doesn't think he is funny, but always cracks me up.
Funny relatable stuff. It's crazy how some people just NEED to be that guy and comment negatively. If you didn't like it, why spend the extra time commenting instead of watching something you do like.
He went from talking about saving money on engraving when he was on Conan in 2013 to buying Shawshank Redemption in iTunes in 2014. Things are looking up for Gary.
I love American stand-up comedy: Louis CK, Bill Burr, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Maria Bamford, Kurt Metzger, Brian Regan, Joan Rivers, ... but to me, Gary Gulman has the most memorable bits: the discman, the karate kid, grape vs. grapefruit, the abbreviators, Bill Gates condescending to Trump, the lady who tries to get in front of him in line at the supermarket, the snooze button, ... timeless classics!
Just today I texted a friend to "seek permission" to call her on the phone I texted to. Hahahahaha. As a side note, just happened to have a wonderful almost hour-long conversation as a result. Strange times.
Loved the NNF episode with him, he's a real good comic... That "Pay for it?" bit cracked me up. Don't understand why they'd cut those two seconds after the "flick it into the dvd player", in which he said something like "i'm not a magician", still, pretty solid five minutes.
It’s also a description of a ton of RUclips people who will complain about the free clip not being longer, or literally the tiniest issues they’ll blow massively out of proportion. Like the intro music was slightly too loud, or the ad was ten seconds longer then usual. They act like it’s a personal affront to them.
jesus christ this guy is fantastic. I can't believe hes not more known. Glad Whitney Cummins and Theo Von mentioned him. Hope to see you at the cellar one day
I agree with him about small purchases that make us happy. The word miser comes from the word miserable. I do agree large purchases should be more conservative.
This man is comedic beast! Damn, only came across him because of Kevin Hart's podcast. What a joy to get a fresh stand up comedian again. In my eyes anyway 👀
Gulman is a master craftsman -- the monologue as a work of art. The writing, the phrasing, the calculated pause...As in all true art, the effort disappears, and we're left just with appreciation and a smile on our face.

Merle Bowers Gulman is a brilliant comedian. He demonstrates true genius at his craft.
Merle Bowers I liked your comment even though I don‘t even know Steven Wright lol

False.
If you never do anything ever, I'm sure plenty of people would call you a loser and criticize you for not having a life.
