"Consumers dealing with an unprecedented number of junk merchandise" is more accurate. I purchased four TENS machines on Amazon within 30 days. All four were defective and broke within a week, so I returned them. Amazon and other retailers should improve their quality control practices, I don't care if it's made in China or the USA as long as I am getting the quality I payed for.

This is not about overbuying - this is about the retailers tactics coming back to bite them.
Aside from people who were never taught reading comprehension, there are a lot of retailers who, in an attempt to sell more products, make the description of their products are very vague - leaving out the more undesirable aspects of their product. They are hoping that when both of these types of people receive their product (the ones w/o reading comprehension and those who do but are without details), they’ll be too busy to send the items back.
But now that so many people are home, we’ve got ALL the time in the world to send them back, which is why so many items are being returned!
Chances are high though that the retailers who purposely misrepresented their products will not take responsibility for why they are getting so many returns and will instead make stricter return policies which will also come back to bite them in the end.

One of the great problems when you buy merchandise off the internet is that the description is so poor and does not have details. Many times the information on the Internet is completely misleading. At least when you go to a store and you pick the item up you can look at it and read information about it on the packaging. The seller has the opportunity to give good useful information. They generally don't and you get returns because people are just trying to see what it really is.

As the owner of six e-commerce stores I have to clairify. Buyers rarely read the description. If I have hundreds Or thousands of items it takes time to write and good lengthy the description. And time is money. So When you keep getting returns because the buyer didn’t take the time to read the description (when it clearly says it’s red but buyer returns it bc they thought it was pink or whatever) you start to think why even waste my time writing this. On eBay there was hardly ever any issue, but on Amazon it’s like they bought it simply because it was recommended. Who buys a $70 item on impulse?!? This is another reason why clothing manufactures should adhere to meticulous universal sizing standards. I know i'm not the only one that finds a Medium shirt is a different size based on who you buy it from. Some places you have to buy a large when you wear a medium at other places.
Even with men's jeans/pants where we have a measured waist of 32 inches, you'd think all 32 inch waist pants would fit the same... Well. They don't.
Same with shoes.... Some manufactures a size 10 fits well. Others you need a 10 and 1/2...
So it's their own fault so many people have to return items that don't fit. And also their own fault they don't hire employees to process and resell their returns...

Wasn’t as big of an issue in the 80s and 90’s. People did lots of Christmas shopping at stores and shops of all sorts.. and Malls, all decked out with decorations. You got to see all of the merchandise in person before making decisions, and if you decided to make a return you had to face the dreaded return lines at the service desk. Fun times, and less waste.. both in monetary and environmental terms.

Having to get back in the car and drive across town hoping the other store had it. Coming home exhausted. Yep. Good times. That scenario being better for the environment is very debatable.

I worked in retail before and I own my shop now, and the number one reason for returns is that they've worn it once and don't need the garment anymore. BILLIONS of perfectly good items in a landfill. So gross.

I have never been successful in returning anything other than with Amazon. It goes back but I never got a refund or even store credit. Amazon was very good, instant credit and the possibility of an actual refund if I wanted.

I've also wondered how many things ordered by RUclipsrs doing unboxing videos are then sent right back.

Every time I walk into a Hobby Lobby or Home Goods, I walk out empty handed because I am just saddened by all the “stuff” that will end up in a landfill whether people-bought and owned or not. I feel the same seeing warehouses of “stuff” just sitting awaiting delivery/return. I’d rather shop at a small store offering quality and unique items.
