- In this video we continue our Simple Safe Upgrade series by installing a custom LED lighting system that includes a motion detector to automatically turn on the lights when the door opens and turn off on a designated time frequency. We will take you step by step as we discuss different options, what we chose and the install itself. This lighting system can be tailored to your individual needs, color and brightness of your choice. Less expensive than commercially sold units and if done patiently can be totally hidden. No more stick on or cheap repurposed under cabinet lighting.

These are awesome instructions. I just did my safe the same way. I wrote down some random notes for a friend...here they are for anyone of you doing the same type of install. Take them or leave them:
Use silicon but only sparingly...drop every 4 inches or so. Rely on the LED strip adhesive to set the strips in place. All silicon will only cause the LEDs to slide around. I used Liquid Nails silicon glue and i'm not so sure it really worked that well (but I did do ALL silicon and did not rely on the LED adhesive). I wrapped the molding and glued/stuck strips with fishing string while silicon glue was drying/curing. I let it set/cure for 24 hours and it still pealed away. Once the molding/LEDs are installed inside, I used a staple gun at ends of the strips to lock down the LED tape. It works well but don't pierce the LED tape...it can/will damage the lights.
I used small but angled molding. Pre-drilled and countersunk every 12-18 inches or so. Use the angle to point lights in towards the center of the safe. 5/8" #6 flat-head wood screws plenty adequate for installing inside safe (with my molding).
Watch for the pinch behind the (my) door hinges.
Leave 2 inches or so of unglued/unstuck LED strip at the end of the molding to allow room for connecting.
Leave adhesive backing on the last 1/3 inch of each end of the LED strip...helps LED slide into connectors but doesn't affect contact.
Make sure the LED strips are going the correct way, they won't work the opposite way..same goes for connectors.
I added magnetic tape on the back of the transformer so I can stick it to the (outside) back of the safe.
When installing the molding/LED into safe, connect one end with a connector before you install it. Making the connections inside the safe is a lesson in frustration due to tight space. Laying it all out on the floor and connecting it once would be wise...I didn't but wish I had.
Remove everything from the safe, shelves included.
Have a small flashlight that you can hold in your teeth. You won't have room to use your hands to hold it.
Working inside the safe with the LEDs on will lead to premature blindness. Seriously, my eyes were messed up for 15 minutes after.
I carefully ran the power cord under the carpet.

Is that just a single 16ft roll of LEDs or did you add more to it? I'm planning on doing the same thing and i'm just trying to plan a good way to route the lights. Any way we could get pictures of the lights with them off to see the routing? Looks great BTW congrats on the new safe.
How is it holding up 5 years later? I like that you used the trim to attach the lights to. I know the adhesive will not last forever on their interior fabric. The lights going horizontal under the shelves how are those connected to the line? I get that the one line going the outline of the safe are connected but do you splice the ones under the shelves into the line?

yeah they crank out some light for sure. You don't think about it but if you poke your head into the safe the blue light is actually bright enough to mess with your eyes...lol
Only question I have is how did you butt splice the connectors to make them into Y connectors. I tired to RUclips how to do it but I still don't understand. Great detailed review btw!

I've also recently started doing research for my safe lighting and I read some important keys like battery powered in case of outage, making sure bulbs are not in direct line of sight and using Red LEDs which suppose to maintain your vision adjusted in the dark.
yes sir, battery backup on a 12 volt DC system is easy. If you just tie in an inline UPS like say for a computer itll run that system for weeks. Also they only turn on when the safe is open so your bleed down is minimal.
I thought about red but it just didn't appeal to me so I went with the blue

nice mods! I feel obligated to warn people to check w/manufacture about warranty before putting any screws through the fire board/sheet rock in the walls of the safe, as I found some companies will void warranty for "altering" fire protective material and any intrusion, including screws could possibly fall into this category.

the trim backers were screwed into the walls with short drywall screws

I noticed your safe is in the garage. I too, have my in the garage. I’m in south Florida. How are you controlling the humidity? Should I also install some weather stripping around the door?

Good afternoon Sir, I watched the video twice and have a question about the "LED Backer" material you used. Specifically, what is it that material that you coated in the PlastiDip? I looked through numerous comments to see if anyone else asked this before posting, but I could not find the same question--I apologize if it's a duplicate!! I just purchased a Cannon Safe and want to do the same thing. P.S.--I like that Harbor Freight hard case video too!! Rich
Hi Rich, Its actually a foam type composite trim sized at around 3/4 inch x 1/8 inch trim available in the trim section of your local Home Depot or Lowes
How'd you get it to stick to the fabric mine wont stick to fabric

I just bought led lighting that attaches to the walls of the inside of the safe that turn on when I open safe, and turn back off in 5 minutes, after that,
They were only 4 dollars each on ebay with free shipping
A Safe like that should have come with interior lighting.
they finely got these led light to be a good bright light at a very low cost and use of energy .. I'am hipped on them now... There Awesome they last like 50,000,000 hours So yes they will be use more into the 21st Century and now even on cars, boats and home uses, may even used in space ship and planes

If I remember correctly they were 1/2 inch
I was disappointed in the lack of brightness........if they dont stick use hot glue gun.....
