This excellent interview made me want to believe that Dave and Burt went out for a drink after the show, and became good buddies..you can see Dave is really enjoying Burt's way of storytelling. I remember that Burt was hurt rather badly, after doing that movie with Clint. One of the "prop" chairs that Burt was hit with, failed to give in, and burt's jaw was broken, leaving him in considerable pain for months afterwords--he got hooked on painkillers, and might have been a little bit high during this solid gold interview!

patricia S - I think the problem with his career, although successful, was he took too many “goofball” rolls. Too much comedy. If he took more serious rolls, like he did in the movie “Deliverance,” I think he would’ve been even more successful.

In esp poor taste when he states Burt had hired him, more than once, to be on Burt's gameshow...yet he still chooses to try disrespect Burt like that after Burt gives him a job! Reynolds jaw looks kind of twisted here, he suffered a broken jaw while acting on the set of City Heat when an extra was meant to hit him with a sealed chair but it wasn`t sealed and as it hit his jaw it caused the break, Reynolds jaw never re-set correctly and this left him in permanent pain, so bad he became addicted to pain killers, this ruined his life so he kicked the habit and now lives in permanent pain. I suffered a broken jaw in 2006, can`t imagine living with that pain for the rest of my life!

The women wanted him, men wanted to be him, the whole thing. he just seemed like so much fun and had the best life. Even in his best movies he doesn't really seem to be acting or trying to, it always seemed like he was just screwing around on a movie set and they were filming it and everyone was loving it. I grew the same mustache as him at about 16 yrs old and I'm still sporting that stache today. Needless to say seeing Burt Reynolds at 10 sort of created a blue print of the fun loving cool guy that I wanted to be when I grew up. It didn't work out that way of course because at that age I thought you could just be like somebody and that was that, but I am still waiting for this mustache to come back into style.

He could project his mind so you knew what he was thinking without barely saying a word. He was so talented and always went for subtle comic cues that were so natural to him any other actor could find this quite challenging if you were not another seriously talented top line actor. I always insisted we watched anything he was in and when VHS shops suddenly sprung up out of nowhere around every corner shop on every street I would beg my mom to hire 2-3 movies per week until I saw everything he was in even though my mom just thought he was the vulgar, yanky, bigheaded show off. She never got what he was about and missed the whole point of his way of doing things. I came across this show from Joe Rogan mentioning him on Letterman but now I will spend the rest of this week in quarantine watching all his movies I guess.

Yes, it is. And, there is no ' do over '. Sure wish there was! Because mine didn't turn out too good. I guess alot of people can say that, but, you can be happy you made it longer than you thought, still, when it's a disappointment it makes you wonder.

I watch as many things as I can find on the tv and internet about Burt. Burt Reynolds was the epitome of man. Burt was great actor, comedian and story teller. He sounds as if he was a very forgiving person. It's great that he gave us stories from his entire life to us, his fans.
    RIP in peace,
    Mr. Burt Reynolds.

The set seemed a bit small & confined, chairs too close together. But I also think Burt was always very aware of the audience & wanting to ensure they were engaged & included in the conversation. So facing towards them was important to him. If you watch him on Carson he's the same, but Johnny's desk was at a much better angle so he didn't have to look, almost behind, as he does here, but easily to the side to look at Johnny, while still facing out to the audience.

Burt Reynolds actually received multiple nominations and even awards for his work, most notably for Evening Shade and Boogie Nights. Although he lost the Oscar, he won a number of local critics film associations awards for Best Supporting Actor in Boogie Nights.

I always thought his two best movies were Deliverance and The Longest Yard. His career suffered when he kept doing increasingly bad Cannonball Run sequels instead of seeking out great directors to work with. He was the number one box office star for a number of years so he had a lot of clout.

    • @screenplayhouse4932

Oh he did what any Hollywood Slimeball Producer does: while you're hot you release cheap as hell crap and just rake the fucking money in. Like that Wonder Woman 1984 TURD. Savvy producers rake it in and love to say, "Hey... it's a BUSINESS."
I'm not calling Burt a slimeball. Or the industry. But CHEAP SEQUELS is the way to make a fast buck. You are right, though, that he cashed out by doing those films.

  • @RJS1974

The applause is proof what a big star Burt was back in the day. He’s largely forgotten today. But this was the start of Burt’s decline. Notice how thin he is. He got hit in the face with a chair at the beginning of filming City Heat and he had to have his jaw wired shut. He lost 30 pounds and looked terrible in the film. He became addicted to opioids due to the pain.

As somebody else posted, there's a Twighlight Zone episode where he does such a great Brando that you actually have to remind yourself that it's not Brando. In his autobiography, he reveals that that's why he grew his trademark moustache, because he was tired of people confusing him with Marlon Brando.
