    I believe Mariah's breathiness is 100% a stylistic choice here because this is prime Mariah we are watching and she was fully capable of creating a clean, clear sound unlike later in her career when her voice became uncontrollably hoarse. I do understand your concern though because it's not the healthiest way to sing and she tended to add a tons of breathiness in most of her songs.

    • @RC-yj7dm
      @RC-yj7dm 4 года назад +57

      Yeah she even said that she loses her voice quicker because there's so much air in her voice

      Part of it definitely isn't a choice. IF the nodules thing is true - it makes sense. She would need a bit more pressure to get better closure of the folds to produce less airy tone qualities - which is definitely easier with thicker folds. So most of her (softer) thin fold singing would be a bit breathy, wanted or not. I think she's making use of it by exaggerating though ...so that it sounds more like it's on purpose.

    I really don't think you're picky. You do a great job at explaining how to make sounds and differentiate between stuff that comes from practice (thus not immediately possible), stuff that is unique to a person (thus unlikely to achieve), and stuff that is part of healthy singing or not. Like, i really don't sing and have very limited knowledge of music but I can tell that you are a great teacher because in spite of that, I can understand what you mean. Your explanations help people who start by imitating beyoncé or mariah and think they are untalented because they don't sound like them, when almost nobody does because they are goddesses. Great video as always Sam!

      Amber kinda. Well what had happened was, Tamar and Tamera were co hosts on a talk show (The Real) with three other women for a few years. Then outta nowhere Tamar got fired. To this day nobody knows why, not even her. It seemed like all the hosts were close friends and it was pretty unanimous that Tamar was the most entertaining on the show. So for her to get fired out of the blue was really surprising for everyone.
      What made it worse was that they never addressed it on the show. And the only time since then that they mentioned her was when she was in the process of getting a divorce. SUPER shady!
      They later brought her up again after someone asked her about the incident. And they seemed sincere about the whole situation, but it later came out that one of the other hosts might have been instrumental in getting her fired (not Tamera).
      I should mention that there doesn’t seem to be any animosity between Tamar and Tamera directly. Tamera’s a sweetheart really. It was just ironic to me how out of everyone Sam decided to compare those two, considering their layered history. Also since Tamar is a professional singer while Tamera is an actress who happens to also sing beautifully.
      (I should also mention that I love them both, so no shade to either of them. I’m just telling the story)

      Practice what you can with a soft voice, other than that, a lot.Hum a lot of your practice. Do more breathing exercises with the diaphragm. You can also stuff your room with lots and lots of things to absorb the sound and/or stuff the bottom of your door with things. Go to a corner of your wall furthest from the door and sing into that corner , So that the corner will absorb the sound and bounce off the sound into your ear so that you can hear yourself. Other than that, take walks and practice singing/talking with an expanded rib cage, Contract the rib cage as you exhale/make sound [talk or sing]so you can practice movement with sustaining your breath support.

    Watching you talk about Mariah makes me wanna see you react to the Schitt's Creek cast recent cover of her song Hero lol. (It's a youtube original video for the grad class of 2020 and the teachers.)
    One of the lead actors, Noah Reid also sang a bit of Always Be My Baby a capella in the show's final episode. There's also an acoustic cover by him as well as a short a capella cover from other castmates of Tina Turner's the Best - both are lovely. You can find live performances of the acoustic version, sometimes featuring Sarah Levy, also one of his SC costars, on youtube.
