  • The Iranian Studies Initiative at UC Santa Barbara and Farhang Foundation present: PUBLISHING AND THE STATE IN IRAN FROM THE 1950s TO THE PRESENT, a lecture by Dr. Laetitia Nanquette
The medium of print is a powerful tool that has links throughout all echelons of society. Hence, the Iranian state, despite the various forms it has taken over this long period, has consistently shown a keen interest in utilizing and influencing the publishing sector. The state predominantly communicates its ideology and contributes to shaping its identity through the medium of print.
What is the role of the state in the Iranian publishing industry since 1950 and how does this role evolve as the industry itself changes? How are these evolutions entangled?
The intertwining and negotiations between publishing and the state are the focus of this talk. I will examine the historical context, legal framework and state interventions that have shaped the publishing industry over this period.

I am an Armenian born in Tehran who has lived in Sydney since 1964. Here's some random observations connected with Iran but stretching geographically beyond. But first, I found this presentation useful.
I am very close to my Armenian heritage as well as to the history and culture of Iran.
The history of book publishing, of scripts and of record keeping have helped me understand cultures in various periods of history and locations. I work as a lawyer and from the start of my career in 1983 I've been a specialist in publishing law, specifically of books and magazines.
I'm in touch with scholars who have studied book publishing by Armenians in the modern period since the 18th century as well as of illuminated manuscripts before that time. In the modern period the New Julfa, Isfahan merchants used their financial resources during the Safavid period and subsequently to take their book publishing activity across to Europe and to India. In more recent times I've research the 20th century lives and work of Caro and Levon Minassian, two individuals who in Isfahan collected books and in the case of Levon Minassian authored maybe up to 80 books on Armenian culture in Iran.
