- My name is Morad Chughtai. I'm one of the hand and upper extremity surgeons here at Florida Orthopaedic Associates and I'll be answering some questions for you guys today.
After an upper extremity surgery, we actually have you see what we call an Occupational Therapist, who are more focused on the upper extremity, as opposed to a Physical Therapist, which most people are used to, who focus on the lower extremity and other parts of the body.
An occupational therapist in addition to knowing how to do the therapy, they have taken extra time and focus into the upper extremity, the intricacies thereof, and know how to do specific splints.
For example, if you have a flexor tendon injury, your splint or your custom splint that the therapist can make has to be in a different position than if you had a flexor tendon injury as opposed to an extensor tendon injury. So that's really important and they're experts at figuring that out and quite frequently we communicate with them to decide what the best position of the splint is depending on how the surgery went and what exactly we found in the surgery. So, they're very intimately involved.
